I spend a lot of time in here working on and crafting tunes, learning new things, failing, succeeding, growing. Sometimes two steps forward, one step back. Sometimes I hit a wall. Sometimes it’s a painful process. Other times it flows like water. And sometimes I get lucky and have something that gets put out into the world and is heard by millions of people (brand new material by Le Destroy, titled “KillKill”, made it into “Night City Wire: Episode 2” and “Tools of Destruction” for @cyberpunkgame. Thankful for everyone behind the scenes who gave me an opportunity to show my mettle). I’m grateful to have this little corner to call my own with a few pieces of gear that I love and utilize regularly. Also... always have a back up for your back up drive because as a creative, losing material is painful! On top of regular gear, hard drives like this little Envoy Pro Ex thunderbolt 3 drive (2TB) by @poweredbyowc (swipe to 3rd pic) are super handy. Today I want to talk about the history of the balafon and the marimba. The balafon is a struck idiophone from west africa, traditionally played from Guinea to Mali, and it dates at least to the 12th century.(1) Meanwhile the marimba is an instrument that developed in the areas of the Guatemala-Mexico (Chiapas) border, this instrument was a result of the african slaves brought to the american continent (the americas). The word marimba comes from the Bantu languages, spoken in south and central Africa, this is the main reason why some people believe that that the marimba didnt developed from the balafon but a close cousin of this instrument, since the balafon is played mainly in west africa, although this cant be known for sure. (2) Later on the marimba evolved into the concert marimba, becoming worldwide famous and being very used nowadays in classical, jazz and popular music. SÆCULA SÆCULORUM is a Latin phrase that means literally forever and ever and less literally forever or ever. This project addresses the disturbing numbness of collective sensitivity regarding the situation of violence that our country is going through. In this sense, the approach begins by identifying the paradox that supposes the fact that even when in Mexico we live immersed in an atmosphere that for some years has been characterized by its acute levels of insecurity - comparable to countries involved in warfare - we have learned , however, to remain indolent. Thus, daily life takes place in relative tranquility on a ground that seems to underlie large deposits of violence. This apparent normalization of violence in the Mexican collective imagination seems to suggest that we have become accustomed to living in alarming conditions of insecurity, to such an extent that violence has become part of our routine, even more so, it has become familiar. Raúl Rebolledo focuses his work on the reinterpretation and distortion of symbols generated by fractures in current economic and social systems. Analyze violence, death, the art system, speculation, or financial markets, providing them with an aesthetic veil that covers dark contents. He has been awarded the Perrier award in the Zona MACO art fair. Its been more than six months of focus on completing recording projects and playing a handful of online concerts (mostly solo, the exception being a performance with Marker as part of the Catalytic Sound Festival 2020; my thanks to Corbett vs. Dempseys Sequesterfest I, Sound Americans celebration of Sun Ra, and the TVL Ruidio Festival for those solo opportunities). Now in the span of three days Ill record new music (documentation of the solo material Ive been developing since mid March for a special album series being put together by C vs. D) and play a concert in person for an audience (the first time I will have done so since a duo gig with Paul Lytton at Elastic Arts on March 12th). Day 2 of the solo recordings takes place this afternoon, and the concert (a first time duo with the brilliant Damon Locks, whose multifaceted work has stunned me over and over again [just check out Damons Solo Sala Solo session from Monday, September 21 at blackmonumentensemble on Instagram]) will be held tomorrow- Sunday, September 27th, at 1:30 CT- as part of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. The set with Damon will take place at the Iowa Building in Hyde Park, at 56th & Everett. Remarkable music is taking place today at the festival and will be streamed live from the Reva & David Logan Center for the Arts from 4-10pm CT (tune in at hydeparkjazzfestival.org), and throughout tomorrow afternoon at various mobile and pop-up stages from 12:30-5:30pm CT (link in bio). The end of a chapter, as the story continues. I truly treasured this space and will always be thankful to @safaririot for the time I spent there. I started making videos when I was 16 and my church needed someone to create visual content. I wouldn’t be A filmmaker if it wasn’t for the Church giving me the opportunity in the first place. Today everything came full circle and @finderspictures was asked to produce this piece for Good Friday. While our small team worked 6 feet apart, with very little sleep, wearing masks and gloves it reminded me that our talent and art is needed during times like Covid-19 to help communicate hope to our world. The great message of the gospel is shared today in this visual experience live on marinerschurch.org. This shoot was put together in 24hours and I couldn’t be more proud of our team and their willingness to sacrifice time away from their families. In no way can I compare this to working on the front lines like our nurses and doctors. I can’t imagine what that’s like right now but I do know we all have the responsibility to communicate hope.
