Every one of us has times when we need to know things will get better. For emotional health and spiritual stamina, everyone needs to be able to look forward to some respite, to something pleasant and renewing and hopeful, whether that blessing be near at hand or still some distance ahead. My declaration is that this is precisely what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened” (Mosiah 16:9). It is the very Son of God Himself. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say, hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve. Even if you cannot always see that silver lining on your clouds, God can, for He is the very source of the light you seek. He does love you, and He knows your fears. He hears your prayers. Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven, but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. For #HispanicHeritageMonth, were exploring the history of @sociosensalud, as Partners In Health is known in Peru.⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ Father Jack Roussin, Dr. Jaime Bayona, Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Jim Kim, and Ophelia Dahl founded Socios En Salud in September of 1994.⠀ 2️⃣ In 1994, Father Jack brought together 12 people in Carabayllo, one of Lima’s poorest districts, to find the primary problems affecting their community.⠀ 3️⃣ On July 8th, 1996, Socios En Salud became official when a few doctors, medical students, nurses and a secretary joined the cause. ⠀ 4️⃣ Clinical support isn’t the only thing SES workers do, they make frequent house visits to provide support in any way possible. ⠀ 5️⃣ SES workers worked to address basic social determinants of health by providing support in nutrition, housing, transportation, clinical cost, education and employment. ⠀ 6️⃣ In 1999, the first group of 75 Multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB patients finished treatment with a high cure rate of 83% (the highest in the world at the time).⠀ 7️⃣ MDR-TB—previously a death sentence—was shown to the world to be treatable in a resource-poor setting. It was a powerful message that even in its deadliest form, we can cure this disease.⠀ 8️⃣ 24 years after SES was founded, it has grown to nearly 500 employees and reached thousands of beneficiaries in Peru.
