India, circa February, 2016. - We began our day with a taxi at 4am to catch a train from Delhi to Agra. It was still dark but Delhi doesn’t sleep—it was bustling with activity and chaos... tuktuks, cattle, people all intermingled. Upon our arrival at the train station, we encountered two men aggressively attempting to scam us and lead us to “travel agencies” off site since our train was conveniently “cancelled.” We were two foreign women much paler in skin tone, easy targets. After much confusion and harassment, we were lucky to meet a friendly college student who almost got in a fist fight trying to help us get to our platform. We laid low in a women only lounge prior to boarding, relieved to be safe from more unwanted attention. . On our six hour train ride, we had naively opted for the cheap seats since we were ballin on a budget. This meant a lot of things related to sanitation and safety that I’ll leave to your imagination, but I’ll share one thing (or many)... rats. The train moved painfully slowly from one station to the next as we felt the intense gaze of the men next to us. They watched our every move, likely just curious since we clearly did not belong, but it was extremely uncomfortable. Wendy and I mostly averted our eyes, staring at each other and out the window, praying (for six hours) that neither of us needed to use the restroom that was most certainly a bucket with little privacy. There was the occasional family and cute babies who cycled through, moments of levity and smiles and appropriate eye contact. . I think back and laugh at how often we found ourselves in dicey situations when we were younger. But we were brave too and always knew we would figure it out (and we did!). I took these photos on a #35mmfilm point & shoot rangefinder that I carried with me at all times. It can get real awkward taking photos in public while people three feet over stared at you so praise be 24 year old Ivy for sucking it up. But oh yeah, we made it to Agra and saw the Taj Mahal. And we made new friends and lived through more questionable scenarios. I’ll tell you all about them sometime. - @ivygchiu on Instagram

THE WORLD TO COME is premiering this week at the Venice Film Festival. The film is based on a short story by Jim Shephard. Jims short stories, novels, and non-fiction are all EXCELLENT. Dont take my word for it. If you like movies, start with his essays, THE TUNNEL AT THE END OF THE LIGHT. The script was written by Jim and Ron Hansen (ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES). Ron is also a brilliant novelist and one of my most favorite historical fiction writers. HITLERS NIECE, JESSE JAMES and DESPERADOES are all perfect. The movie is directed by Mona Fastvold, a Norwegian filmmaker who made SLEEPWALKER. She did a GREAT job,and put her own totally unique stamp on this movie. Thank you, Mona! The film belongs to @katherinewaterston and @vanessa__kirby. These are two of the best actresses I have ever worked with. Their characters meet, fall in love, recite poetry, tolerate husbands, endure a million hardships, sit by the fire, and have a first kiss that is incredibly sweet. My character spends most of his time outside with his horse (we kissed a little bit too- its fine). Chris Abbot rounds out our cast of 4. He is fascinating as always. We dont get enough of him in this movie, but you can go back and rewatch CATCH-22 or JAMES WHITE. The man can hold a screen! I acted in and produced the movie, and I am honored to have worked with all of the people involved, including @killer.films and the hard working Romanian crew. The film would have collapsed without @Patriciapoienaru and @whitlader who produced and also doctored stray dogs. Whit, you were heroic. I dont know where films like this end up these days, but the Venice Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, and definitely a personal favorite, so it’s an exciting start. We are all grateful to the festival for having us. Everyone says “the show must go on” but only a few make it happen.
