We conclude our series on Gen. Clair Chennault today with a complete look at an eight-page article on him by Life magazine in its Aug. 10, 1942, issue. The story paints a fascinating real-time narrative of a World War II hero — and the magazine’s surrounding advertisements offer a glimpse of wartime life at home. Please share it with children who are home from school — as a short, meaningful history lesson with local ties. - @chennaultair on Instagram

Lucas Cranach the Elder 1472 - 1553 portrait of Lucas Cranach the Elder German painter and printmaker, one of the major representatives of the northern Renaissance. Lucas the Elder was the father of Hans and Lucas Cranach the Younger, also painters. Cranach was the eldest of nine children. His father, Hans Maler, a painter himself, must have given him his first lessons. Lucas adopted the name Cranach when he was already over 30. It refers to his place of birth, the current town Kronach. He moved to Vienna in 1501, and to Wittenberg in 1505, after he had been appointed to the court of Frederic III, elector of Saxony. Experts often see a breach of styles after the move to Wittenberg. His Vienna works were full of expression and very dynamic. After the move, his style became more static. In Wittenberg Cranach met the reformer Martin Luther, whom he portrayed many times. Besides being a painter Cranach also sold medicines and paper, ran a wine pub and printed books. In 1522 he printed the first editions of Luthers German translation of the New Testament. In 1524 Cranach met Albrecht Dürer, the other great German renaissance artist. Dürer made a portrait of Cranach at that occasion. Lucas Cranach was a member of the Wittenberg city council and was elected as mayor three times. Perhaps it was a talent for politics that enabled him to work for catholic as well as protestant clients. The protection he received from Frederic may also have been important for his business. Frederic remained catholic but supported the Reformation. Cranach and his wife Barbara had five children. Together with his sons Hans and Lucas Cranach ran a thriving workshop, that produced several thousand paintings, engravings and prints. Often it is not clear exactly who created what. The workshop and his other occupations provided steady revenues to Cranach, making him the wealthiest civilian of Wittenberg. Cranach remained in the service of Saxonian electors throughout his life. In the service of John Frederic I he moved to Weimar, where he died in 1553. The portrait was painted by Lucas Cranach the Younger in 1550. - @_lucas_cranach_the_elder_ on Instagram

Dick Winters , a native of Ephrata in Lancaster County, was the commander of Easy Company, 2 nd Battalion, 506 th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101 st Airborne Division, in World War II. . His story became famous when it was told in the book and miniseries called Band of Brothers. . Winters parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. . According to history.com, In the early hours of June 6, 1944, he and other members of his company parachuted into Normandy, where later that day hundreds of thousands of Allied troops would land during the D-Day invasion. With their commander missing in action-he had been shot down by German anti-aircraft fire--Winters assumed control of Easy Company. Under his guidance, the troops destroyed a German artillery battery near Utah Beach in a battle known as the Brecourt Manor Assault. His actions earned him a Distinguished Service Cross and promotion to captain. . Led by Winters, Easy Company went on to take part in the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of the Dachau death camp and the occupation of Hitlers Alpine retreat, the Eagles Nest. . The book Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose followed Easy Companys journey from basic training. A miniseries based on the book was aired by HBO in 2001. . In 2006 Winters wrote his own book called Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memories of Major Dick Winters. . Winters died Jan. 2, 2011. His personal belongings are part of the collection at the Hershey-Derry Twp. Historical Society where they are displayed in a re-creation of his home office. . September 8, 1942 - Brigade Hill. The withdrawing Australians under Brigadier Arnold Potts (2/16th), had set up a defensive position both here and on nearby Mission Ridge. During the evening of September 7, the advancing Japanese had navigated their way through the jungle and encircled the Australian positions, cutting off Brigade HQ from the remnants of the 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions. Potts ordered the first wave of Australians forward to fight through and relieve the besieged 40 men at HQ. Most of these men were either cut down or trapped in the jungle as the well entrenched Japanese laid down heavy fire with rifle, machine guns and grenades. Only 9 men made it through to HQ. At that point, Potts ordered these men plus extras from HQ to fight back through the Japanese positions to link up with the remaining Australians on the other side. Knowing the futility of the situation, Captain Breton Langridge (pictured below - 23 years old) handed his paybook to 2IC Lt David Kayler-Thompson, whilst Lt Henry Lambert handed over his prize tin of tobacco. Within minutes both men were dead. Altogether 62 Australians were killed in this action and 39 killed earlier at Mission Ridge. As zero hour approached the order was given to fix bayonets. I watched our men awaiting the orders to advance. I saw the determined jaws, the tensed lips, keen eyes and alert bodies. There was not a movement, and not a word spoken. They knew what lay ahead of them and each steady, confident man knew that he had a trusted mate beside him. Mr. Florentine Ariosto Jones Born in New Hampshire 1841. He fought in the Civil War as an enlisted man in 13th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. He gave his occupation as “watchmaker”, and there is a photograph in the Library of Congress that may be of the young Jones holding a pocket watch. There is a resemblance to a photograph we know to be of him as an older man. . •Soon after the war was over, he worked for E. Howard & Co., one of the best watch companies in the USA, rising to the position of Superintendent. However, in 1867 he went to Europe looking for a place to begin his own company. His goal was to combine “all the excellence of the American system of mechanism with the more skillful hand labor of the Swiss” to produce watches for the American market. . •Jones crossed the atlantic to build his own manufacture in Switzerland. He met Moser in Le Locle and the seed for the first watch company in the northeast of Switzerland was planted. In 1869, Jones rented a building that belonged to Moser in the Rheinstrasse, and in 1874 he was already expanding to a new plant. This was close to Moser’s hydroelectric plant and is the current headquarters of IWC. #fajones #iwcvibes #iwcvintage #vintageiwc #iwc #iwcingenieur #iwcportugieser #iwcportofino #iwcpilot #iwcbigpilot #iwcdavinci - @iwc_heritage on Instagram

Transmen in History 1915: Laurence Michael Dillon Laurence Michael Dillon (born Laura Maud Dillon, 1 May 1915 - 15 May 1962) was a British physician and the first trans man to undergo phalloplasty. His brother, Sir Robert Dillon, was the eighth Baronet of Lismullen in Ireland.Dillon was the second child of Robert Arthur Dillon (1865–1925), heir to the baronetcy of Lismullen, and his Australian wife, Laura Maud McCliver, née Reese. Dillons mother died of sepsis ten days after giving birth. Dillon, assigned female at birth, was raised with older brother Bobby by their two aunts in Folkestone in Kent, England. Dillon studied at St Annes College, Oxford, a womens college. Dillon was president of the Oxford University Womens Boat Club and won a blue for rowing, competing in the Womens Boat Race in 1935 and 1936. After graduating he took a job at a research laboratory in Bristol. Dillon had long been more comfortable in mens clothing and was more self-assured living as a male. In 1939, he sought treatment from Dr George Foss, who had been experimenting with testosterone to treat excessive menstrual bleeding; at the time, the hormones masculinizing effects were poorly understood. Foss provided Dillon with testosterone pills but insisted Dillon consult a psychiatrist first, who gossiped about Dillons desire to become a man, and soon the story was all over town. Dillon fled to Bristol and took a job at a garage. The hormones soon made it possible for him to pass as male, and eventually the garage manager insisted that other employees refer to Dillon as he in order to avoid confusing customers. Dillon was promoted to recovery-vehicle driver and doubled as a fire watcher during the Blitz. Dillon suffered from hypoglycemia, and twice injured his head in falls when he passed out from low blood sugar. While in the Royal Infirmary recovering from the second of these attacks, he happened to come to the attention of one of the worlds few practitioners of plastic surgery. The surgeon performed a double mastectomy, provided Dillon with a doctors note that enabled him to change his birth certificate. - @invisibletransmen on Instagram

Foto @romulofialdini 2. GUCCIO GUCCI: When the name Gucci comes to mind, most fashionphiles conjure the image of Alessandro Michele has dreamed up in the last few years. But long before marquee designers were running the show at Gucci, the fashion house got its start as a leather shop. Born in 1881, Guccio was the son of an Italian leather maker. Guccio was not too keen on taking the same occupational route as his father, so he travelled to London and Paris, where he worked as a waiter, dishwasher and concierge. In London, he worked at the prestigious Savoy Hotel as a lift attendant, and it was during this time that he took note of the beautiful luggage styles that he saw.On his return to Florence , he did follow in his father’s footsteps. The first Gucci shop was founded in Florence in 1921, In the beginning, Gucci’s main business was making saddles and other accessories for horseback riders and the red and green woven stripe , inspired by saddle details. in general many of his designs were inspired by horseracing, and his company quickly became known for its incredible level of craftsmanship.Leather was hard to come by in the mid-1930s, because of sanctions against Italy, so Gucci began experimenting with alternative textiles. This led to the very first signature Gucci print: small interconnected diamonds in dark brown, woven into a tan hemp fabric. In 1932 Guccio created the first loafer shoe with a gilded snaffle, as well as a wonderful selection of luggage ties, shoes and the famous handbags with a bamboo handle was born under similar circumstances in 1947; Gucci artisans were scrambling to find materials towards the end of World War II and discovered that they could use Japanese bamboo to craft unique bag handles . Guccio enlisted his three sons Aldo, Vasco, and Rodolfo to join the business in 1938. The year 1953 is famous for two reasons: the death of Guccio Gucci, and the opening of the first Gucci store overseas. Boutiques started to spring up everywhere, and the glamorous ‘GG’ symbol that is still used today, was created in the 1960s. The following decades brought about near bankruptcy and family problems, but the company was re-established in the 1980s. - @__parmiss.pourmand__ on Instagram

- @farandulaolotina on Instagram

FRANK SCHUMAN Developed in Northeast Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood in the early 20th Century, Shuman’s “Sun Engine” is a poignant reminder that while humanity has been slow to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have certainly not lacked the technology, or foresight, to do so. On the expansive lawn between an ivy-covered house and workshop at Disston and Ditman Streets, Shuman integrated his deep knowledge of glass, optics, and convection heating to create a powerful array capable of doing actual work. Tacony was a center for technological revolution during the period between 1890 and 1920. Frank Shuman was a world famous inventor who lived at Disston and Ditman Streets. Scientific American visited this community multiple times for such innovations as the casting of the mammoth statue of William Penn and all the domework adorning Philadelphias City Hall. This project was overseen by Francis Schumann, President of the Tacony Iron and Metal Company, the uncle of the inventor. Much attention was brought to this community as a result of Shumans numerous inventions, including wire glass and a gas mask so durable it was used in World War I. Shuman also was notable for solar power, having a solar powered engine on display during sunny days between 1907 and 1909. He later oversaw the worlds first solar energy plant in Egypt which pumped 6,000 gallons of irrigation water per minute. “One thing I feel sure of,” he wrote prophetically in a 1914 Scientific American article, “is that the human race must finally utilize direct sun power or revert to barbarism.” Based on the output of his device, he reasoned that an array covering 20,250 square miles in an unpopulated portion of Africa’s Sahara Desert would produce the same amount of energy as all of the coal mined in 1909. Displaying an understanding of the social value of solar, he urged “…all far-sighted engineers and inventors to work in this direction” not only for their own profit but “the eternal welfare of the human race”. #SAWTOWNUSA #DISSTON #TACONYVSGLOBALWARMING #HISTORICALTACONY - @tacony_19135 on Instagram

As close as I will ever come to a real life super hero, this is my Granddad Major Edwin Picknell. Reading his diary that he wrote and hid whilst in POW camps, moved me to tears. He fought so that we could have everything that we have today. He fought with African regiments and saw the good in the everyday Italian and German soldiers who held him captive, a tolerance that many today could also do with #veday #hero - @grantpicknell on Instagram

This is a hard moment. I love LA, but I’m leaving. I’ll be back next year, but I can’t help but feel all those fun ‘failure’ feelings anyway. It’s ok. Sometimes you have to go all the way back to get where you’re going or some bullshit like that. Hopefully I’ll emerge from the cocoon with a bankable YA novel about Lenny Bruce and Robin Williams and trans kids growing up in the pioneer valley. Wish me luck 💜 - @aepicene on Instagram

Inga pengar fanns sparade i företaget, bara skulder. - @polarbrod on Instagram
