Hans Andersen Brendekilde (1857–1942): Worn Out, 1889, oil on canvas, 207 x 270 cm, Fyns Kunstmuseum, Odense, Denmark . . Another Danish painter and a close friend of Ring, Hans Andersen Brendekilde grew up among poor people in the countryside and depicted the true conditions of life in rural Denmark in the period from 1880 to 1920. In this heart-rending depiction of o rural scene, we see a day-labourer lying crumpled on the rock-strewn ground of the barren field where he had been working. His onerous task, with other peasants, would have been to remove the stones from the ground, prior to ploughing and planting, and put them in piles awaiting disposal. The field although barren takes up eighty per cent of the picture. Look at the detail Brendekilde has incorporated in his depiction of the ground. However, what is more emotive is the portrayal of the two figures in the foreground. The elderly peasant worker has stumbled and fallen to the ground. He is dressed in shabby clothes which are covered in dirt. One of his wooden clogs has fallen off during his fall. The heavy stones he had been carry in his apron, lie on the ground next to him. He had finally been overcome by exhaustion or maybe he has suffered a heart attack. A woman, maybe his wife or daughter or just a co-worker, has rushed to his aid. She is kneeling next to him and cradles his head. Her mouth is open wide as she screams for somebody to come and help. Her impassioned plea has yet to be answered and she is both overwhelmed with fear for the man and her own helplessness. - @painters.paintings on Instagram

Landscape is the first noteworthy American pictorial genre, but it is a tacit agreement that the gender reached its zenith with the Hudson River School. My encounter with the work of this group of landscape painters confirmed its symbolic and aesthetic link with European Romanticism, while raising a nearly pantheistic character of painting, a sublimation of nature connected with everything and the concept of God. Artists such as Frederic Church incorporate the concept of “the sublime” to the landscape painting on this side of the world. This concept had already been addressed by Kant in his book Critique of Judgment (Kritik der Urteilskraft) to approach art and had exponents in Europe, such as Turner. The meaning of “the sublime” as sacred —which opens the possibility of approaching nature in its divine and monumental character— is close enough to the painting process which results from my meditation practice. #SubmarineSunday ⚓ On July 31, 1945 USS Bullhead (SS-332) left Fremantle, Australia on her third war patrol. They were headed to the Java Sea to join a wolfpack with USS Capitaine (SS-336) and USS Puffer (SS-268); then, on September 5, they proceeded to Subic Bay to patrol on their own. Bullhead arrived in the area on August 6, but Capitaine did not arrive until August 13. On August 12, Capitaine ordered Bullhead to take position the following day in a scouting line with Capitaine and Puffer. There was no reply and on August 15, Capitaine reported, Have been unable to contact Bullhead by any means since arriving in area.” At the time, the area was fairly crawling with subs—USS Cod (SS-224), USS Chub (SS-329), Capitaine, and Puffer, as well as the British HMS Taciturn and HMS Thorough— it is difficult to point to one Japanese anti-submarine attack as the one which sank Bullhead. However, the most likely one occurred on August 6, 1945, when an enemy army plane attacked with depth charges (when Bullhead was presumably cruising on the surface off the coast of Bali). The pilot claimed two direct hits, and for ten minutes thereafter, there was a great amount of gushing oil and air bubbles rising in the water. Since the position given is very near the Bali coast, it is presumed that the proximity of mountain peaks shortened Bullheads radar range and prevented her from receiving a warning of the planes approach. Bullhead was the 52nd and final American submarine lost during World War II. She was lost with 84 men aboard. May they never be forgotten. Bullhead is credited with sinking four enemy ships (1,800 tons), damaging three ships (1,300 tons). She also rescued three airmen from a downed B-29. 📸 1: USN photo Print of the Bullhead (SS-332).
