On this day 50 years ago - Aug. 29, 1970 - Led Zeppelin headlined the Man-Pop festival as part of the Manitoba Centennial celebrations. Tickets for the all-day event were $5.50 and more than 15,000 descended on Winnipeg Stadium... er... Winnipeg Arena. A torrential downpour forced the hasty venue change hours after the show began. 🎸 Zeppelin, unimpressed with the acoustics of the Old Barn (and, perhaps, in no condition to play), prepared to walk out. Winnipeg singer Dianne Heatherington refused to let that happen and talked some sense into the British rockers. 🎸 Zeppelin hit the stage well after midnight and played until 3 a.m. Bass player John Paul Jones said after the show: “It was just an unfortunate set of circumstances, we dont blame anybody for it. I think you lot did a pretty good job, what with all the groups pitching in with their equipment and your local sound people, with such short notice. I feel sorry for the cats that lost all their sound system out there in the rain. This happened on this date Saturday Night Live . I wanted to have a projection of Mt St Helens erupting behind us. In ode to the Northwest and to where were are from and the marking of history and nature. That day i kept my inner sadness about Ian Curtis to myself , 15 or 16 years earlier he died on that day the day of Mt St Helens erupting actually first time i cried about someone i didn’t know. On a cool aside though I remember looking at Don Pardo’s tea steeping next to his reading glasses and newspaper in his vocal booth. If i could paint its one i would do for sure. The history and the professionalism talk about steeped!!! That booth was so exact to the second even the steam rising was on time and welcomed into the light shining down. Such a nightly ritual. He. wasnt in there but his stuff was. We actually had a skit that was cut from the show too hahaha That night was the last time we saw Jeff Buckley. At the end of the show you can see me lift my arms over my head and if you do that with your shadow it makes an eye. @chazzylake “Sup, Circumstance” is now available out in the world today. Mixed by Kevin Bloom and Chazzy Lake at Leilani Sound, and partially recorded here as well, this album twists and turns in the reflection of Chazzy Lake’s amber colored sunglasses. Perhaps my favorite memory is digging into the drum stems with Charlie and not remembering how or why we recorded some of the drums the way we did on cassette tape. Eventually the sound revealed itself to us but maybe we were too embedded in the spirit world at the time of recording to understand what we were doing. I also remember that the final mixing session was our last session before quarantine began in March. Here are some photos of the making of “Sup, Circumstance” although the picture of @deadshakers & @overhandsam is at an unrelated event, the album would not have the sound it does without Sam Snyder’s masterful mastering. Enjoy this record, it’s a glistening beam of hope in a bleak and changing world. - @leilanisoundstudio on Instagram
