Happy Birthday Arthur Bowen Davies! Driobe and her Handmaidens by Arthur Bowen Davies, American, 1862-1928 Oil on Canvas, circa 1902-06 Museum purchase, through the gifts of Knoll, Inc., Dr. Frederick D. Levin and Mr. I. Richard Levin, Vin and Alyce Erickson, Bernard and Helen DeVries, and the Mary J. Stevens Estate, by exchange Arthur Bowen Davies was a major figure in American Art in the early 20th century, showing as part of The Eight at Macbeth Gallery and working as one of the primary organizers of the seminal 1913 Armory Show. He was also one of the most noted and financially successful painters of his day. Davies was born in Utica, New York and at a young age aspired to be an artist. He was particularly attracted to the Tonalist works of George Inness, an influence that informed his early style. Davies studied at the Chicago Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago before moving back to New York and studying at the Art Students League. He worked briefly as a magazine illustrator before turning solely to painting. Beginning in the early 1890s his paintings were selling well and he was represented by the prestigious dealer William Macbeth. Davies became best known for his ethereal, Symbolist inspired figurative works, of which Driobe and her Handmaidens is a fine example. Davies was a friend of critic and dealer Alfred Stieglitz and a recognized authority on modern American and European artists. He consulted with many private collectors, including Lizzie P. Bliss and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, whose private collections became the core of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. As President of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, Davies was a leading force behind the organization of the 1913 Armory Show, alongside Walt Kuhn and Walter Pach. Bin yıllar önce, günümüze nazaran tüketilebilecek şey miktarı çölde kum tanesi kadarken tartışılıp hayat felsefesi hâline getirilen kinizm... Az ile yetinmek. değil bu. Kanaatkâr olmak, şükretmek hiç değil. İçindeki koca çınarın dallarını acımadan kesmek gibi; gerçeğe erişmek için arzularını, isteklerini birer birer doğramak!.. İnsan, nihai özgürlüğe tüketerek değil; okuyarak, düşünerek, üreterek ve en önemlisi çarpıtılmış gerçeklikten arınarak ulaşabilir. Hissederek yaşamak gerek bu hayatı, hissetmeye çalışarak değil. Yürek, var olmak için sürekli dışarıdan yakıta ihtiyaç duymamalı. İlişkiler birer araç değil. Yalnızlığı dindiren, bedeni uyuşturan haplar değil. Reçetesiz bir hayat. İlaçsız beyinler, gerçek düşünceler ve gözlerdeki o fer!.. ♡ Hiçbir nesneye sahip olmak istemiyorum. Benim diyebileceğim hiçbir şey girmemeli hayatıma. ArkadaşIM, dostUM, sevgilİM; hepsini çoktan geride bıraktım. Özümü zincirlerinden kurtardığımda milyarlarca insan, milyarlarca hayvan, trilyonlarca canlı; hepsi ben, hepsi biz oldu. İdeal versiyonuma ulaşmak için salt maddiyata sırt çevirdim. İhtişamı, kılığı kıyafeti huzur ile takas ettim. Bir bedenim var şu yaşamda, bir de gözüm gibi baktığım bilincim. Süzgecime takılan şeyleri yazıyorum, gerçekliğin ötesinden imgeler çiziyorum. Her geçen gün dışımdan alıp ruhumun özgürlüğüne veriyorum. Tüketmekten arındıkça kendime ulaşıyorum. Nefes almak öylesine tatlı, öylesine huzur dolu ki... Gök mavi, ağaç yeşil, böcekler kıpır kıpır... Hiçbiri benim değil; hepsi benim... In this sense, Prometheus was often associated with Beethoven. We’re so delighted to be reopening @drawinglabparis on Sep 8 with our latest large format drawings on canvas. We spent lockdown in Paris preparing this new series to share with you. These are accompanied by hundreds of drawings from our archive that reveal for the first time our collaborative process, across the multiple intersecting themes we’ve been investigating since the early 90’s. Exploratory drawing workshops will be held in situ later this month. Reservations at Drawing Lab. Curator Blandine Roselle in her catalogue essay: Lucy + Jorge Orta’s creative process resembles the growth of a tree. The trunk represents their conceptual approach and issues. The branches stand for thematic developments, which are progressively explored and expanded as the tree branches out. The roots, deepening rhizomes, provide the foundation for an interdisciplinary approach that gives substance to the process. In a way, the exhibition ‘Orta Drawing Lab’ is a tree too. A tree that is yours to climb and grow. Lucy + Jorge Orta comparent leur processus créatif aux branches d’un arbre poussant dans différentes directions. Le tronc représente leur démarche conceptuelle et leurs problématiques. Les branches incarnent le développement des thématiques qu’ils explorent et approfondissent peu à peu, au fur et à mesure qu’elles poussent et se ramifient. Les racines, rhizomes profonds, fondent la réflexion interdisciplinaire qui donne corps à la démarche. À sa façon, l’exposition ‘Orta Drawing Lab’ est lui aussi un arbre, qu’il vous appartient d’escalader et de faire pousser.
