Propelled to fame with Romancing the Stone in 1984, he went on to star in Fatal Attraction with Glenn Close, Wall Street, Basic Instinct, The Rainmaker, and many others. Most currently, he’s acted in Marvel movies Ant-Man and The Avengers. We chatted with the actor and producer back in 2010 - while in radiation treatment for tongue cancer and during the box office release of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Here’s a snippet from the interview - read more at citylifemagazine.ca: Q: At this point in your career, how important is it to find different kinds of characters to play? A: Actually, it’s crucial. It’s the only reason to get out of the house, quite honestly – unless you find something that is exciting and motivating. I’m in a great place in my life personally right now in terms of Catherine [Zeta-Jones] and our two little, young children that we really enjoy. So I don’t get out that often to go do stuff. You have to trust your instincts and I like flying without a net. I enjoy that risk-taking aspect. It’s exciting for me. Q: There are very rare relationships between actors like the one you’ve had with Danny Devito. Tell me about this lifelong friendship. You guys have worked together often. Is your friendship and professional relationship hard to balance? A: It’s seamless. It’s the beauty about working with friends. I mean, I know now why people like to work together. It’s because you don’t have to go through that formality, that dance of introductions, the this-and-that. There’s a familiarity. We’re old buddies and so in the limited time that we have together; there’s a comfort factor. Plus, he’s funny. He’s funny off the set or on the set. He can’t help himself. So I completely understand why people like to work with the same actors and/or the same directors again and again, especially as the schedules and the budgets get shorter and tighter every year. Im heartbroken over the passing of director Joel Schumacher & wanted to tell you all what a wonderful man he was. I was fortunate enough to have worked with him on the films Falling Down & Flawless. After I auditioned for him for Falling Down, he hugged me. Then he said What an actress! He was so nice that I thought I’d done so poorly that he felt sorry for me. It was only when I got the part that I realized he was being sincere. How could someone be THAT kind, I wondered? Working with him on Falling Down was a dream. I was so young & working with such big names, but Joel made me feel like I belonged there. I couldnt believe my luck when he wanted to work with me again on Flawless. Even though my role was small, he invited me to be part of the private reading of the film he had with De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman and just 2 others and had me read several of the roles. Later, he invited me to a personal celebration of his along with Phil. I didnt know what I’d done to gain this kind of affection from him, but I felt a special bond with him that was hard to explain. In 2018, I reached out to him regarding a film I’m producing & he read it & gave me feedback. WHO DOES THAT? In an interview of his I saw last night, he said his success was made up of a series of people who had taken a chance on him. Well, dear Joel, thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking a chance on me. Im forever grateful to you and will never forget how good you were to me. I couldnt recall what brought Sam Shepard to my flat on upper Madison Ave. All I remember was his magnanimous presence, as if he stepped from this surrounding dream I was having or as he was having where we meshed in my cameras lens to his aura of the cool. He had these enormous hands, and I had no wide-angle lens to claim otherwise. The lens I had was always normal, always true. All distortions voided. The picture tells it all. The picture doesnt lie. Just Sams eyes focused on me as I was wandering & wondering between the shutter clicks. A kinda lazy hazy midtown afternoon for all those moments un-remembered, but for the one moment when his eyes crossed mine within the moment, our moment, all black & white. This is a photo my friend @threepeonies took of me in Decatur, Atlanta in 2009. It was outside a Mexican restaurant we had gone to for lunch. The dog wasn’t with us and from memory I wasn’t as smitten with the poochies as I am now so it’s likely that it went un-patted 😭 I spent 3 months in Decatur on an internship with @pastemagazine. It has felt to me like that trip altered my life. It had been a stressful couple of years prior and so three months away from everything I knew couldn’t have come at a better time. I had been dating my wife for about 2/3 years at this point. We had lived together pretty much straight away and this was the longest time we had been apart since we had started dating. While I had been away she had moved to Dublin for a job with RTE so life was really changing a lot at this point, maybe more than it ever has. She saved up and was coming to visit. I hadn’t told her she was flying into the worlds busiest airport and the first one I had experienced where you collect your bags and then re-submit them through security before you leave. Still don’t understand the point of that. Needless to say when we finally met at the airport she was 90mins late getting to me and in floods of tears. A little bit of tension in the air from both parties. While we were living our lives in those days Michael Jackson had just given a press conference announcing the “This Is It” residency. Hannah innocently mentioned how the press had been saying it was an impersonator and not MJ giving the press conference. For whatever reason this really got to me and instead of being loved up I went into a rant about it and we had a negative + sour trip back from the airport in near silence. Who knows why this happened. Remarkable really. When she was leaving a week later love or something was palpable and we were sobbing in the same place in each others arms. I have never cried more in my life. Floods of tears. Endless. A man playing the piano in the background. She since said she was sobbing on the plane too.
