Fifty years ago, three women from Kolkata - Sujaya Guha, Sudipta Sengupta and Kamala Saha - reached the summit of a 20,130-foot peak in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. This had never been climbed before. They named the peak Lalana, which means woman in Bengali. On August 26, 1970, five days after they summited Lalana, Ms Guha and Ms Saha were dead, swept away by the frigid, fast-flowing waters of a high-altitude stream fed by five glaciers. Another member of the team, Shefali Chakraborty, was lucky - she got stuck on a boulder and managed to walk away. Ms Guhas body was eventually found but Kamala was lost forever. Triumph had given way to tragedy. It was a nightmarish experience, says 74 year-old Sudipta Sengupta, the only surviving summiteer from the expedition. We were all preparing to return home. We were headed to Batal to send the first telegram to let the world know that we had achieved this. The team had broken into two. We had hoped that the two would reach Batal. I was given the charge of joining them the next day after packing up the base camp, says Ms Sengupta. We were sitting outside in the dark, hoping for the mules to come. Suddenly one of the porters arrived and told us, Leader didi mar gayi. He was breathless and said he couldnt find the others. We were stunned. 50 years later, no one has managed to summit Lalana. The last attempt, in 2018, had to be called off. Multiple crevasses along the route, a lengthy route requiring rope-fixing and heavy stores meant that this attempt had to be called off with the climbers returning to the Base Camp. In 2018, an attempt was made, says Ms Sengupta. They couldnt cross beyond 18,000 feet because of the crevasses. They said they wanted to come back to make another attempt. (cont.) ¿Sabías la importancia de lavar correctamente tubérculos como la patata, remolacha, boniato, zanahoria? Nuestra compañera @albaramirezciencia , Tecnóloga de los alimentos y experta en microbiología y seguridad alimentaria, nos lo cuenta. Aunque luego retiremos la piel, hay que lavarlas antes correctamente. En otras verduras, hortalizas y frutas como el tomate, todos lo tenemos claro. Pero parece que al ser la patata un alimento al que retiramos la piel, solo vemos el momento de ‘’lavar’’ cuando ya las tenemos peladas y listas para cocinar. Te vamos a explicar qué riesgos entraña esta mala práctica y seguro que querrás aplicar nuestro consejo. La patata normalmente llega a casa con tierra, aunque la industria antes dividir las toneladas que procesan, en las porciones que compramos en el súper (bolsas de 3 o 5kg) o en las cajas paletizadas que encontramos en las fruterías, siempre acaba llenándonos la encimera de polvo. Esta tierra, ha sido la misma que ha protegido el tubérculo y sus raíces, además de todos los riegos. El agua con el que regamos en el campo, no es agua de la que bebemos en casa, por lo que normalmente contiene bacterias y otros microorganismos que se adhieren al polvo y a la tierra, esparciéndose por los espacios donde pasan. Si no escurrimos y despegamos bien la tierra de nuestra patata antes de proceder a cortarla, estaríamos cortando la superficie para eliminar la piel, e introduciendo los microorganismos presentes en la tierra en la matriz del alimento, además, el polvo viajaría por toda nuestra cocina, lo que quiere decir que acabará depositado en cualquier lugar indeseado. Pero… ¿Y vale con ponerlas debajo del grifo? La respuesta es NO, hay que frotar y eliminar correctamente el barro que se forma. ¿Y si son ecológicas? También hay que lavarlas correctamente, los microorganismos no entienden de certificaciones. Por último, recordad siempre retirar las partes verdes de la patata y usar utensilios y tablas de cortar diferentes para las distintas matrices que manipulemos. In October 2013 I joined a well known slimming organisation being severely overweight and with what I now recognise as a binge eating disorder. I started losing weight and found a focus I hadnt had before. All was going well and I lost a great deal of the excess weight. It got to November 2014 and my birthday week and I put 7lbs on. At the time I had personal stuff going on and felt like losing weight had become the only good thing in my life. I was determined to put it right. Id been on holiday from work and when I went back I was bought a birthday cake to celebrate. I felt obliged to eat it. I felt extreme guilt for eating it and for the first time since my teens I purged. The following week at my slimming club I lost 10lbs. This sparked a cycle of binge purge behaviour and over time I started restricting calories and I was eating around 500 calories a day weekdays, with bingeing and purging on a weekend. This continued until my boyfriend took me to a gym and introduced me to weightlifting. I remember him saying to me we need to focus on you being strong not skinny and those words will always stick in my head. For the first time I had a new focus and actually had to start to eat to fuel my training sessions. I believe this was the start of my recovery. I was doing pretty well until lockdown hit. I started doing obsessive amounts of cardio and not eating enough to sustain it. At this point I was introduced to @fuelledbymacros who started to gradually up my calories and challenge some of the thoughts about food. Ive reduced my cardio and I am focusing on lifting again and fuelling appropriately which has had a massive impact on my mental health and mood. Ive come to realise that I will always be in recovery. But I am pleased to have come so far with the support of my boyfriend, my friends, my family and my nutrition coach. - @dogmamtolexi on Instagram
