- A Kwakiutl wedding party arrives in canoes, 1914. The Kwakiutl people have lived along the coasts of British Columbia (Canada) as fishers for around 9,000 years. Today, there are about 5,500 Kwakiutls living in the tribes own reserve.

This year Bowne House is celebrating the 375th anniversary of the 1645 Flushing Town Charter (βLiberty 2020β). Our new blog by Bowne House archivist Charlotte Jackson introduces the Charter and its precursor, the 1639 Indian deed to Queens, and will feature profiles of the 18 original signers and their families. Follow along to discover what made the Charter special, and explore why these early settlers were drawn to the Long Island frontier. Link in bio. - a home that dreams are made of

The wood I walk in on this mild May day, with the young yellow-brown foliage of the oaks between me and the blue sky, the white star-flowers and the blue-eyed speedwell and the ground ivy at my feet - what grove of tropic palms, what strange ferns or splendid broad-petalled blossoms, could ever thrill such deep amd delicate fibres within me as this home-scene? These familiar flowers, these well remembered bird notes, this sky with its fitful brightness, these furrowed and grassy fields, each with a sort of personality given to it by the capricious hedgerows - such things as these are the mother tongue of our imagination, the language that is laden with all the subtle inextricable associations the fleeting hours of our childhood left behind them. Our delight in the sunshine on the deep-bladed grass today might be no more than the faint perception of wearied souls if it were not for the sunshine and the grass in the far-off years which live still in us and transforms our perception into love. Many people have remarked that my paintings display a fondness for tangled foregrounds, screens of foliage, and particularly for pendulous branches. They say, it looks Japanese. Experience at the lake, however, might teach them that such are typical of the wild Canadian woods; that vegetation obscured the view nearly everywhere, and that the tangle of growth is so thick that often an axe is needed to cut a way through. If they have kept to the beaten path, then they probably respect convention in art as well as in life, writes Walter J. Phillips in an unpublished manuscript titled Wet Paint from the 1920s/30s. There is less than a month left to see work by the consummate Canadian printmaker at the McMichael. ππ’ππ΅π¦π³ π. ππ©πͺπππͺπ±π΄: ππ΅ π΅π©π¦ ππ’π¬π¦, is on view through October 12. β£ πΌοΈ: Walter Joseph (W.J.) Did you know that saltcod was the nationβs fourth leading export after the American Revolution? And that the waters between Penobscot Bay and todayβs Canadian border were among richest fishing grounds during the Civil War era? Join us on September 25th, 2020 at 4 PM for Maine Sea Grantβs next Coastal Conversation radio program on Community Radio WERU 89.9 FM, as we celebrate Maineβs bicentennial with Karen Alexander and Bill Leavenworth, historical marine ecologists who have pieced together Maines 19th century fishery. The photo, an old 1907 postcard from the private collections of Bill Leavenworth, is representative of how many coves and inlets on the coast of Maine likely looked in the 1800βs, when inshore fisheries, farming and woods work drove the economy. - @maineseagrant on Instagram
