She left the film industry for seven years, refusing to perpetuate sexualized stereotypes. @francq__ repost: “freshman year turned 15 a couple of weeks ago. What an amazing gift it is to have been surrounded and assisted by supportive and kind people from the very start of trying to form an identity in the music world. For a long time I have taken this for granted. It would be another decade before I would encounter the industry/business world of music with my bandmates in Hop Along; until then, it was the encouragement and attention of family members, friends, even acquaintances who gave me the equipment to believe that releasing my own music made any sense at all. In my freshman year at MICA I lived with 3 imaginative, funny and brilliant young women, whose presence drove and inspired me. My cousins, who are sisters and strange like me, wrote and visited me and were also fantastic inspiration. That year I wrote more songs than I think I have at any other time in my life. It was just such an exciting shock, to be so far from home and meet so many creative people, at that formative age of 18. In 2005 I “released freshman year on burned white CDRs that I stamped with a linoleum cut image of a silhouetted goose wearing a crown. The stamp was an illegible blob, so I painted onto each CD with a little brush. My cousins helped me cut and glue the sleeves for these CDs, a couple of nights before I had to drive back to Baltimore to start my sophomore year of school. A lot of people have helped me, and continue to do so. The building and terrible rage that surrounds us now is making me comprehend and wonder at all of the generous individuals and communities that I have met. Too many to name here. I will try to correct this. To celebrate this anniversary, freshman year is now streaming on DSPs for the first time ever. Tomorrow, Ill be playing a live mini set on this Insta page, at 6 pm EST/ 3 pm PST. Ive also released an EP of 3 new tracks on Bandcamp; entitled more songs from 2005. All proceeds made from Bandcamp purchases today will go to @dopepeopledoingdopethings - a non-profit that works to assist and strengthen Philadelphia’s communities. #MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. This Gender Equity Week explore the stories of other women who pushed boundaries and broke the glass ceiling on our Lady Action online tour.
