This is what ableist bullshit looks like: when you ask for captions for a live public talk between two people online and are told unfortunately our capacity at this time is such that we can only add text at a later date. • Capacity has nothing to do with online captioning. All it takes is some care--care to learn whats involved, care to consider access issues when planning events online and offline, and care to make an access contact part of every event announcement. • What I dont understand is the irony of institutions taking a strong position against systemic racism while participating in systemic ableism. • People sometimes say: we cant provide live captions on Instagram as if Instagram gives them an excuse to be exclusionary. Its not hard to fix this: record the exchange, caption it, then release it to everyone at the same time. Providing a transcript alone afterwards is not access, and it is not inclusion--its a separate is equal gesture--where separate time plays the role of a separate place, or a separate door. • I realize its not always possible to make everything accessible--thats a given. But in this case, there was absolutely no consideration given to the mere *possibility* of making the event accessible, or the organizers would have provided a contact address to make an accommodations request. At the least, theres no need to come up with empty excuses. People with disabilities are not stupid; weve seen and heard pretty much every excuse imaginable.
