Im back! Its good to take a break from now and then. From January I barely shot photos, after work mainly I was training on my MTB, running on my local trails in the woodland. Somehow I just had to stop and refuel myself while I push the heartrate over 195 bpm on the saddle haha. But hey, autumn is in the air and Im more than ready to share my new adventures with you. Of course I will stay home in Hungary, wander locally and document the everchanging colors of the season. So today’s my #trailaversary With everything that’s going on now, trails closed, and everyone locked indoors, I’ve been thinking a lot about my hike. Even with all the challenges, I was so lucky to be able to do my walk last year. Thinking back now, from this point, I can’t help but feel homesick for the trail and all of those people I met and hiked with. Dear Friends, We are all grieving the terrible loss of Konrad Steffen, our dear friend, collaborator, and ally. It seems unreal, and beyond the power of words to express. The news is still a bit sketchy, but I thought I should share this note, which came to me in the wee hours of this morning from Dr. Jason Box, who is at Swiss Camp right now: Koni was lost in a water filled crevasse while the rest of us were working nearby, unaware... We found a 2.5 m long hole broken through the 3 cm thick floor of the crevasse 8 m down... Search continues with a bigger team on their way from Iceland. His son Simon was with us as was Derek Houtz, another veteran almost-son like me, all from Boulder. Many in Boulder deserve to hear these details. Immense man. Immense loss. —Jason” Koni was indeed an immense figure in the lives of so many of us. Now that he is gone, I realize that he was something of a human nunatak, an enduring part of the landscape standing tall above the flow of Arctic knowledge and action all around him. I am truly stricken by his passing. When the Extreme Ice Survey was still uncertain, still unrealized, still swirling around in my imagination, Koni emphatically encouraged me to move forward with a time-lapse camera network. “A long time series of images at high temporal resolution would really be worth having,” he said. In later years, he became a member of the Earth Vision Insitute board. We worked together on public outreach at COP-21 in Paris, and shared many other points of common interest. Beside the rain, which we were already used to from other northern destinations, there was one thing very characteristic for the Faroe Islands, namely very strong wind. Guides day out in Acadia. We went out to look at Jordan direct tentatively knowing that the sun and warm weather doesnt make for good climbing on that route. The second photo is the not bonded first pitch of Jordan direct. The last photo is the first pitch of cedar chest as we were gearing up to climb two huge chunks of ice fell through the start of the climb. We just packed up and climbed at otter.
