UITGELICHT De leden van het promoteam van de Gentse Cultuurzomer lichten elk om beurt hun favoriete kunstwerk van de Kunsthal Gent uit. Deze week was het de beurt aan Sofie. Ze koos voor een werk van Conrad Willems. Mijn oog viel op het werk Composition III. Ik was geprikkeld en nieuwsgierig. Ik pakte de telefoon op en vroeg naar het verhaal achter deze donkere blokkenstructuur. Ik laat de kunstenaar aan het woord: “Toen ik mijn eerste blokjes kreeg, was ik nog erg jong. Ze waren verpakt in een houten kist op wielen met een uitschuifbaar deksel. Het openen van die kist vormde steeds een magisch moment: de verschillende blokken vormden een oppervlak en alles paste precies. Vanuit die 2D-orde konden eindeloze 3D-objecten gebouwd worden. En daarna, als de speeltijd voorbij was, moesten de blokken terug in de kist, altijd in een willekeurige volgorde, zolang ze maar precies pasten. Alain For the second portrait in the Piece Together Project, we painted Alain Nahimana. Alain was one of the founders of the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center, and a very prominent figure within the Portland Community. Alain unfortunately passed away earlier this year, but his work advocating for immigrants, social justice, equality and women’s rights will be remembered by our community for generations to come. . Alain’s three sons were able to join us yesterday for the painting, which made the experience that much more special. Mary-Allen Lindemann of CBD once stated “How lucky we were to have Alain in our lives. As he often said, by working together, we can make great things happen.” . After leaving Jeff Koons studio as an assistant painter, Dustin Joyce develops art that sheds light on mass cultural trends of consumerism and pop culture. He is developing a new genre of art commentary and style that he believes is overlooked within contemporary art. Dustin, like all millennials, was greatly affected by pop culture even in the rural setting he was raised. His work challenges the viewers relationship to cultural norms and designs a work that objectifies everything. “Lets Make This Happen“ - new 12x12” oil painting will soon be on view at the Lancaster Museum and sold through Thinkspace Projects. I have not been here for a very long time. I hope all of you are doing well, you and your loved ones are healthy and calm now in this confusing time. I didn’t share anything with you all this time because I was busy with work and was deeply engaged in updating the site. And there simply was no energy left for Instagram. Now, as many issues have been resolved, I want to return to you again to share new works and some work process. Many people know about the brutal Instagram algorithms, I presume. For example, if an account does not publish for a long time, then its new posts are almost not seen by subscribers. And in this regard, I’d like to ask for your help. Please support me, with a comment, like - in a word, any activity, which will help me get out of this lull. This way I will be able to understand who sees my publications and we will not lose each other. On the occasion of our 25th anniversary, we are delighted to present a special exhibition between 25 September–7 November 2020. Taking place in both galleries on Old Burlington Street in Mayfair, its home since 1995, this unique event showcases the diversity of the gallery programme by celebrating its history whilst also looking ahead to the future. New and historic works by each of the gallery’s 29 artists will be featured in the show. Many of the artists in the exhibition – notably #MammaAndersson, #YinkaShonibareCBE (@shonibarestudio) and @DavidShrigley – have been with the gallery from its infancy, marking a long and fruitful collaboration over the past three decades. Works will include a new and highly naturalistic painting by @KehindeWiley that continues the artist’s investigation into the hierarchies and conventions of classical portraiture; a hand-painted series of unique works made specially for the exhibition by #DavidShrigley that references the longevity of the gallery’s history with typical, irreverent humour; a new autobiographical painting by #DenzilForrester inspired by his childhood memories of Grenada; a new figurative painting by #DeborahRoberts (@rdeborah191) of an African-American adolescent exploring themes of race, identity and gender politics; and a new painting by #LisaBrice that continues the artist’s interrogation of the male gaze. An illustrated catalogue looking back at the past 25 years will accompany the show, with contributions including texts by Mamma Andersson, @marciaccfortes, Jennifer Higgie (@bowdownpodcast) Howard Rachofsky and David Shrigley. ________ All images copyright the artist.
