Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. Bought in 68 by The Wolfram family - it started as a restaurant, then became a space for traditional German music, then a disco club in the 70s, with gay dance nights - then eventually became known as Club Spaceland when Mitchell Frank came on board. Silversun Pickups, Foo Fignters, Elliott Smith, and Lady Gaga had some of their first shows here. Let’s take a look at shopping and retail in Heber City. In the very early years there were a few residents who tried their hand at running a retail business but had no success. Most of the early settlers were quite poor and lived by producing what they needed and trading with others to get what they needed. On a rare occasion they would save what little money they could to purchase goods on occasional trips to Salt Lake or Provo. However, as the amount of residents grew so did the economy and several business minded residents began offering goods to be purchased right in town. One of these merchants was Mark Jeffs. Mr. Jeffs, an English immigrant had worked on the railroad crews that built the lines in Utah and had successfully saved $70. He used that savings to purchase inventory in Salt Lake and then he brought those goods to Heber City and started a store in a 14x14 ft. log cabin on Main St. An astute businessman, Mr. Jeffs was able to continue building his retail business. In 1903 he left to serve a mission and asked his son in law, Joseph A. Rasband to be in charge of his store. When he returned 2 years later he reorganized and sold shares of his new store called, The Heber Mercantile. A new building was constructed in 1906 for the Heber Mercantile and the store was managed by Joseph A. Rasband. Located on Main Street next to the bank on Center Street the new merc was a welcome addition to the Main St. business area. Thank you to @amexau and everyone involved in our latest delivery of @twogoodco meals. ⁠ ⁠ The meals have all been given out, believe it or not, and the community, far and wide (Im talking about the Bega Valley LGA) are so appreciative of them. Healthy, delicious - they are a hug to the soul for many people. ⁠ ⁠ As you probably would be aware, the #COVID restrictions are really causing quite a lot of grief for many people down here, already traumatised by the loss of their homes or near-misses caused by the bushfires. ⁠ ⁠ And now the anxiety is ramping up, with bushfire season being declared today, September 1, the weather is wonderful but warming up, people are still living in tents and vans, and many also battling local government bureaucracy to get approval to rebuild.⁠ ⁠ Ive heard many stories of domestic violence escalating and depression and suicide increasing, as well as people dying suddenly (which I believe is caused by the stress). ⁠ So, although a meal might not sound much in the wider scheme of life, it means a lot to the recipients because they know someone has cared enough to source the food, cook it, and bring it down here to them.
