Its not unusual to hear people blame their weight gain/lack of weight loss on a slow metabolism. More often than not your metabolic rate is perfectly fine. Body size, age, gender and genes all play a small role in the speed of your metabolism, but it’s not as big as many imagine and luckily the same as we can down regulate our metabolism, we can also build it up. To see real, lasting changes, you’ll need to take accountability and commit to real, lasting changes in your diet and lifestyle. As easy as it is to blame your weight on your metabolism, scientifically the bigger you are, the more kcals you actually burn. As larger bodies require more energy to carry out basic bodily functions. You MAY have given yourself moderate adaptions by crazy low yoyo dieting, but ultimately your metabolism isnt damaged. Long term we can actively do things that will help us. Small tips to improve your metabolism- Start monitoring your sleep/stress- Sleep deprivation is perceived by the body as an additional stressor, so cortisol goes up and testosterone drops, this isnt ideal for fat loss. This may mean addressing your bedtime rituals and lowering day to day stress. Start strength training- Building muscle will help you burn more calories even when you’re not moving/ the higher your muscle mass, the faster your metabolism. When we over diet and over-do cardio our body is forced to break down muscle to use for energy. The lower your muscle mass, the slower your metabolism. Protein intake- Adding lean protein to your diet will help the metabolism in two ways. 1. Supports muscle building and muscle retention 2. the foods themselves are more challenging for your body to digest, so it takes more energy from your body to utilise them than other foods. Move- Try to make activity part of your daily routine. That could even include walking as part of your journey to work. Even motoring your steps can be eye opening to how little you actually move. Eat regular healthy meals- Eating more frequently keeps hunger at bay, you’ll also have 1. More energy to move your body. 2. Be less likely to overeat 3. It’s Wednesday! And I’m recovering from a tough week last week. I had a series of negative experiences pile up on me, which left me feeling exhausted and unmotivated. Seeking “comfort,” I ate Shake Shack. I ate McDonald’s. I didn’t journal. I wound up feeling gross and annoyed. I’m sharing this to say that nothing is perfect. I try my best to stay positive and post positive. But life is not a straight line. It’s mountainous af! But here’s the thing- when I practice gratitude, positivity, self-care, kindness, and clean-eating REGULARLY and as much as I can... one day (or even one week) of bullsh*t can’t bring me down. I recently heard the news about Jamaica banning dreadlocs in the classroom and I can’t tell you how much this infuriated me. What message does this send out to parents and children who opt to loc their hair? Especially in a country that is celebrated for just that. It seems as tho the only locs that are okay are the ones that sat atop the great Bob Marley’s head. - When I decided to grow my locs, it was a long term commitment, not only to a style, but something I also believed in. I also wanted to be the first Heavyweight champion with locs. Even in that process, I noticed a stigma toward dreadlocs, whether it be the parents of someone I dated or offhanded comments from boxing counterparts and potential sponsors. - We may have seen this nonsense in America, where some seem to have even a prejudice against how how hair naturally grows out of black people’s heads, but to ban locs in Jamaica seems like the worst kind of colonialism mindset for a country known and loved for its people and it’s Rastafarian culture. - As long as it poses no health or hygiene issues, I see no reason for the government or school boards to be in the business of telling students what hair styles they must have. Rasta culture is based on an Afrocentric, spiritual, and anti-colonialist, counter culture movement that has never sat well with the establishment in Jamaica. - I’m extremely disappointed that this decision comes at the very same time we celebrate Jamaican emancipation from the British empire.
