Guess what my district mandated during the time we were experiencing the trauma of orange apocalyptic skies, hazardous smoke, and families still adjusting to new schedules and distance learning? Standardized tests for our 1st through 5th graders that will be reported to the state. (Yes, reporting to the state is required, no, the highly problematic computerized test they chose to mandate is not.) This mandate after a summer of emails from administration on how we must all be trauma informed. The hypocrisy makes my skin crawl and the dehumanizing insistence of standardizing any child right now makes me ill. Long story short, many of us at my school site organized a boycott and sent a thoughtful, passionate, well-researched letter to our superintendent, the schools board, and school district heads informing them of our boycott of the test and our alternative plan for assessments to administer on a more realistic time-line. We are still waiting for a response, but I am proud of our small collective action. We have a long, long way to go in our district and even at our school site to repair the harm that has been been done to many Black and Brown students; to offer reparations for the education debt (Gloria Ladson-Billings); to more actively hire and retain teachers of color, especially Black teachers; to become a school and district that truly centers Black and Brown experiences, histories, achievements, and joy. This action may result in punitive measures taken against us, but ultimately our hope is that there will be a deeper investment in dialogue and action to end standardized testing and figure out assessments that are supportive and meaningful for everyone involved.
