Former NASA astronaut Frank Culbertson has the distinction of being the only American not on the planet when the 9/11 attacks occurred. . It was important to me that I document family life during the quarantine. The Gent skate homie, Siebert invited me to take a portrait at his home in the Rabot neighborhood. This was the first house i entered during the quarantine. Danealle made me feel comfortable as we went to the backyard to shoot her and the four kids around the table under a tree. I would often make two exposures on these visits, the idea being, once I am making my final edit of the images I may not want to repeat a similar pose or set up. I think this was a good idea as it also gave me the chance to keep each set up natural. I didn’t want my esthetic choices of the scene to move beyond the composition of the shot. When I was limited to only one exposure of a subject, I couldn’t help myself with arranging the items in the frame in a more “pleasing” way. This was a compulsive act conditioned on me from the thousands of commercial shoots I have worked on. Those projects where a committee of “experts” all collaborate to make the most viable image possible. It was hard to release these engrained urges. I found more often than not, when I had two set ups of the portrait, I preferred the natural picture to the one we “staged”. - @sloanisabuller on Instagram

3 years ago today my sweet grandma GG (aka grandgum) passed to the other side. She’s my favorite of my guardian angels. As the oldest of her grandkids I got (by default) the most time here on earth with her and I treasure every memory and moment I had with her. Now she’s my fierce and fast advocate as my angel. She loved sailing, was in the WAC in WWII, and when she died the one thing of hers I requested of the family was her bright red plumeria plant. Look at it now and then! It produces spicy fragrant cinnamon scented dark red flowers. I love that it reminds me of her so many times a day when I see this beautiful plant. 🎂HAPPY 99th Birthday 🎉 Gram Cracker 👵🏼 Rose 🌹! Wow girl wow! 99 in the COVID ERA!😯 I love you - love you - love you to the moon 🌙 + back grandma!! (She always says it 3x) For her amazing gramcracker fan base update- grams has progressed pretty deeply in dementia + it’s pretty hard to have real time conversations these days as her mind + hearing aids don’t seem to pick up clear voices on phones that easily anymore. It’s terribly heartbreaking + frustrating at times to be yelling “HI GRAMS ITS TALI - I LOVE YOU - ITS ME - ITS TALI - HI!!! (over + over) + then to hear her go HELLO ? HELLO? IS ANYONE THERE? YES GRAMS ITS ME TALIII !!! 🤪😕😞🤪 repeat ... aaand repeat because sometimes just sometimes... my voice gets thru (mostly i have to do these calls in my car - so no one gets scared or thinks I’m crazy for yelling so loudly to my grams over + over again 🙇🏼♀️before I wanna hit my own head on the steering wheel cuz I can’t get thru to this being I love SO much who is SO far away on SO many different levels) Grams has been in lock down at her nursing home due to COVID since March + I have not been allowed to see her 😞. In the beginning of this pandemic - someone at her facility had the virus in NY- + we all remember the fear of when this virus 🦠 would find its way into a nursing home. BUT 6 months later this 👆champ is still in cruise control + now 99! So now as we adjust to this reality ... there is just a lot of yelling I LOVE YOU 💕 GRAMS into the phone endless times till she sometimes can hear it - but thank goodness when she does - my voice has not disappeared from her memory bank just yet + when it registers we bask in moments of pure love till the Oger of démentia pulls her attention away into the land of gibber gabber. It’s not my fav land - by any means- but for the moment gibber gabber has protected her from the perils of this most recent reality of being locked up in her room for most days due to Covid + keeps her from the reality of not seeing each other - hugging each for eons now - these dealth tolls - this election fears - etc. I fear ...⬇️ (continues in comments ⬇️) - @tali_lala on Instagram

I’m really going to miss you 💕 My grandmother was an extraordinary woman with inner-strength, belief, love, was one hell of a classy lady and I am so incredibly fortunate to have had her for so long. The relationship we had over the last 6 years has never been stronger. She and I always had a special bond, but that bond grew when she helped me work through the grief of losing my father and in turn, I like to think I helped her through the grief of losing my grandfather. Where do your heart and soul call home? 🏡 In the most surreal of circumstances, we search for authenticity. Sometimes, that means returning to passions we’ve lost touch with in our lives. Roger Medearis (1920 – 2001) was an artist, born in Fayette, Missouri, who studied under Thomas Hart Benton and showed early promise in the movement of Realism. In 1946, after his service with the army came to a close, he moved to Connecticut where he built an artist’s studio. At his first show in 1949 at New York’s Kende Galleries, seven of his Realist paintings were sold, and a piece from his subsequent show in 1950, “Family Reunion”, was later exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But with income scarce, and Abstract Expressionism growing in popularity, Medearis grew disillusioned with America’s fading interest in the art of Realism, to which he had dedicated his life and studies. He moved from Connecticut back to his Midwestern roots, working as a paper salesman for over 10 years. He would avoid virtually all exposure to art. By the 1960s, however, after moving to California, Medearis found himself visiting art galleries and museums again, and in 1966, he converted his garage into a complete studio. He resigned from the Container Corporation of America and once again, began painting. In the decades that followed, Medearis continued to hone and evolve his technique, creating his own, unmistakable style. He continued to paint until his death in 2001. After a week away in Brisbane photographing a couple of families and trying to keep my kids entertained we’re finally back home. I’m exhausted. It was built in 1824 as one of a row of ordinary brick homes, but in 1920 was given a total makeover by architect William Sanger. He gave it a stucco front and a 16-foot top-floor studio with an enormous curving window to bring in light. Some years later, amid a revolving door of notable artist residents, it received a happily shocking coral pink paint job as well. As early as the 1920s, the home was owned by Edmond Martin, a Village landlord of some quirky esteem. When he died in 1985, his portfolio of a half-dozen nearby buildings passed to his daughter, Celeste, an actress and former Rockette who chose to live in 114 Waverly even as it crumbled around her. Celeste was a neighborhood icon, famous for wearing short shorts and crop tops well into her 90s, waving to the annual Pride Parade crowds outside. She was fiercely loyal to her tenants, often refusing to charge rent when they couldn’t afford it, and fending off predatory buyout offers over the years. She died in March 2019, age 98 (though her true age is disputed). Her property holdings were valued at $25 million, including her quirky pink house, which sold that fall for $8.5 million to “LA-based designers and HGTV stars” Robert and Cortney Novogratz, who are currently renovating it to make it their primary residence. Descontente com os rumos políticos do país e ansiosa pela experiência de viver fora do Brasil por um tempo – para se preparar para um trabalho que estava programado para acontecer nos Estados Unidos –, a fotógrafa Camila Pastorelli, 32 anos, se organizou e decidiu, antes, passar uma temporada em Londres, na Inglaterra. UNIVERSITY — 80 percent of students to enroll in fall 2020 — An email circulated among department heads reported that about a fifth of all Yale College students have chosen not to enroll for the upcoming semester. According to the email, which shared preliminary estimates for undergraduates’ fall plans, more than half of the student body will be living in Yale’s dorms or the surrounding area. The remainder, some 25 percent of students, will enroll remotely. Marvin Chun, Yale College Dean and author of the email, wrote that close to 1,100 sophomores — about 70 percent of original matriculants to the Class of 2023 — would complete classes online, after having been barred from campus for the fall semester. Two years. It’s been two years since I lost my precious mom and my whole world was turned upside down. It is honestly still unreal at times and I will never not question why it happened to her so young and so quickly. I never got to really say goodbye. There are some days I still don’t know how I’m getting by without her. She was so selfless. She always listened and was the comfort I needed when anything was wrong. It’s a lonely feeling. It’s not easy and it’s not without pain and tears, but I’m trying. I hope someday when the clouds part and I see the sun again, I can feel her warmth. Ich finde es ist völlig okay, wenn ein System irgendwann ausgedient hat - und unser Schulsystem hat leider schon sehr lange ausgedient, und es wird nur noch künstlich am Leben gehalten. Deshalb versuchen wir eine neue, neuartige Schule aufzubauen: Es gibt in der Hochstraße eine staatliche Grund- und Mittelschule und ihr gegenüber wurde jetzt eine zweite Schule gebaut, weil ja dieses Paulaner Gelände abgebaut wurde und mehr Wohnungen hinkommen. Unsere Idee is es, diese zwei Schulen unter eine Führung zusammenzubringen und dort eine 9- bis 10- zügige Grund- und Mittelschule aufzubauen, die altersübergreifend ist, Inklusion lebt, selbstorientiertes Lernen lehrt, viel Praxisprojekten verwirklicht, Notenfreiheit gewährt. Wir haben schon mit verschiedenen Vertretern vom Referat für Bildung, Sport in München, mit der Landesregierung von Oberbayern gesprochen und reden mit den neu gewählten Abgeordneten des Stadtrats. Lustigerweise steht nämlich einiges von dem, was wir vorhaben im Koalitionsvertrag. Es müssen ein paar Entscheidungen getroffen werden von städtischer Seite, damit es überhaupt seinen Lauf nehmen kann, aber wir sind dran und sehen es alles super positiv, dass es funktionieren wird. Today we say goodbye to a grandmother who couldn’t help but make things grow—seasons and seasons of flower gardens, a wild houseful of six kids, the most luscious towering fig tree, a small business she opened after discovering the magic of New Orleans shave ice, and a raving fan club of fifteen grandchildren. She never said no to an adventure, she laughed often and made us laugh even more often, she loved without condition, and she rehabilitated many a wayward soul. Her home was warm, her arms were safe, and her beautiful brown eyes never stopped sparkling. Thank you for tending the gorgeous garden of your life and legacy with such excellence and faithfulness. Zaterdagochtend met onze jongste kat naar de dierenarts gefietst om haar in te laten slapen. Ze was verlamd. Misschien FIP. Er was een CT scan gedaan, die wees veel uit maar gaf geen bevestiging. Je komt daar nooit meer achter, zei de dierenarts. Haar mascara was uitgelopen waardoor het leek alsof ze om onze Bommel huilde. Dit gaat niet beter worden. Haar laatste reflex is deze, en ze tikte de snorharen aan. Bommel lag levenloos op mijn schoot. Twee injecties later was ze dat ook echt. Het verschil was niet te voelen. Ik zat een paar minuten met haar dode lijfje in mijn armen, dacht aan die keer dat ik haar trots met een veldmuis in haar bekje zag lopen op het erf. 147 euro rekende ik af. Met de dode kat in mijn bakfiets reed ik nog naar een tankstation om batterijen te kopen voor de afstandsbediening van ons hek. Thuis begroeven we Bommel in een schoenendoos. De kinderen gooiden sterrenglitters over haar heen. Ik groef een kuil, zij schoven de modder terug. Bobby vertelde een verhaal, Mozes zette veren en bloemen in het graf. Romy brandde salie. Lessons we learn from our patients. Today I had a patient who was paraplegic from a GSW to the back 20 years ago. He said he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I asked him how he has dealt with this especially being an innocent bystander caught in the middle of crossfire. His response - “God is great and I accept anything he throws my way”. Rogue Wave 2020 runs from September 28 to October 25 on Ward’s Island, Toronto. Each day we are featuring a different artist who is exhibiting in this outdoor exhibition. Laura Shepherd has lived on Toronto Island since 1993. Along with working as a production artist/designer and director in broadcast animation for 28 years, she joined the Island collective ‘L’ecole des faux arts’ in 1995 and has been part of their shared studio space at Artscape Gibraltar Point since 2012. Living and working on the shores of Lake Ontario, she is drawn to the riveting effects of weather and light, the island, the city, the lake and sky. Laura is a part of the growing collective of outdoor Island artist mini galleries, presenting a changing offering of recent work in scratchboard, experiments with gouache, and works from her archives. I photographed this 100 year old woman in her small ranch kitchen outside Gallatin Gateway, Montana many years ago. People among their stuff tells a more in-depth story. I had her hold the wedding photo, and honestly I cannot now remember if it was hers or her parents photo, but the point was to remind the viewer that this 100 year old woman was once very young like them. And that when she looks out at the world she sees it as she did when she was young. People’s bodies grow old but the person inside does not. I really just wanted to see people again. My friends, my clients, my clients-who’ve-become-friends, my family. These are not the best of times for any of us — and I thought long and hard before endeavoring on a Porch Series of portraits during the time of #COVID19 considering primarily safety and appropriate social distancing, but also whether such a project would be an accurate representation of myself as a family photographer. Emily reached out to me a couple of months ago to set up a family session for her family. She didnt give me much detail other than she was having some medical issues & wanted to have photos of her with her family. Emily unexpectedly passed away weeks before our session. Her family went forward with photos, knowing that it was something that meant a lot to her. We couldnt have had a more beautiful morning with the weather & the colors. Hi friends, I wanted to share a cause that is near and dear to my heart. My dad and his partner lost their home and most of their possessions in the Oregon fire. It was a beautiful old fishing cabin on the bank of the McKenzie River. My dad had just finished several projects around the house, including updating their pergola, deck, and gate. His partner, Cindy, is an avid gardener and had spent countless hours tending to their garden. They were immensely proud of their home. It was a special space for them as well as our whole family. I cant believe its gone. This is obviously a devastating loss for them. My sister @palominojax and I are raising money to help get them back on their feet.
