Things seem and feel discrete and bear no relation to other things. Everything around me presents itself as having independent existence. This appears to be a false reality. If I was a surrealist and wanted to create a black square painting I could pick up the black paintbrush and paint a square in the middle of a white canvas. When I am finished the square would appear as it is: a black square. But what if I then paint the entire canvas black? The original black square would disappear–enveloped by the blackness all around it. But what if I then pick up the white paintbrush and paint everything white, except for a trace of a square shape in the center of the canvas? The appearance of a black square would reemerge. In this process, two things were discovered: 1) The existence of the black square was predicated on there being white space around the black square. 2) I could construct the exact appearance of a black square through the use of negative space. This leads me to the following quandaries: Does the black square exist? Or do the surroundings around the supposed black square make the black square exist? To extend further: Does an object exist? Позднее он превратил свой дом и окружающие его дворы и задворки в тотальную реальность собственного искусства, которое получило название «Беднотаун». Широкую известность Муратов обрел в начале 2000-х годов благодаря своим ироничным работам, в которых он превращал героев мультфильмов в исторические политические фигуры. ⠀ Славу серьезного художника Дамиру Муратову принесли политические работы о месте Сибири в России и мире, о природе консюмеризма, мечте русского человека о мифическом Западе с его «недостижимо развитой» культурой, капитализмом и демократией. #RetinaRocks Optic disc drusen (ODD) are refractile calcific concretions that form anterior to the lamina cribrosa. They are felt to be extruded extracellular calcified mitochondria, and may be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. It is often difficult to differentiate ODD from true optic nerve edema. This is often the dilemma when seeing a child with a possible swollen nerve, although there are several tests that can help. ODD will often hyperfluoresce on fundus autofluorescence. We have found ultrasonography to be unhelpful, since ODD don’t calcify until later in life, by which time they usually become much more visible on examination. B-scan OCT imaging is often not helpful, although newer swept-source machines can directly visual the drusen. The retinal nerve fiber layer will be variably thinned with ODD and thickened with true disc edema. Fluorescein angiography is probably the best way to differentiate the two, since a swollen nerve will show late leakage, whereas ODD will not leak, often showing staining of the drusen. Our patient is a 15YO boy with quite pronounced bilateral optic nerve drusen visible clinically and on OCT. Although central vision was good, he was complaining of increasing peripheral vision loss due to the drusen compressing the surrounding nerve fibers. Unfortunately, there is no proven treatment although some have tried pressure lowering medications for neuroprotection. Flesh Car Valet S03 dont get your hopes up. James Hornsby’s work emerges from the manic temperament of our digital age. His photographs are drenched in high-fructose Candy Crush colour palettes and congested with synthetic pattern and texture. They describe a comprehensive fantasy world populated with radioactive flowers and digitally mutilated youth. He creates his pictorial mutants through a combination of traditional studio photography techniques and anarchistic post production. This ‘misuse’ of his craft subverts the slick aspirations of advertising photography, and undermines the capitalist narrative that self-expression must have market value. I was recently commissioned by @canned_beets to create some artwork for their upcoming album. Check them out, theyve got some groovy tunes. I made this by creating the scene in a 3d program and then applying a 5 color halftone using a custom grown fractal pattern. My favorite part of this image is that the yellow in the leaf is the exact same yellow as in the record label but looks totally different, swipe to see the closeups. Color theory rocks! Ann Arbors City Council unanimously voted Monday to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms and plants. The resolution makes possession, cultivation, and purchasing of magic psilocybin mushrooms and other entheogenic substances — like ayahuasca, mescaline-containing cacti, and iboga — the lowest priority for local law enforcement. The move follows similar successful measures in Denver, Colorado, and Oakland and Santa cruz in California. A look at the work of #beep2020 artist Tess Gray www.tessgray.net Bacteria Gathered at Avebury (image 1) is one in an ongoing series re-imagining bacteria magnified to a size that befits their significance to life on the planet. This painting looks specifically at their influence on human activity. After a visit to Avebury stone circle I painted the image thinking of the structures arranged by humans who would have been inhabited and influenced by these primordial organisms just as we are today. I used a mixture of sketches and photos to compose and create the picture. In contrast I created Waxing Solstice (image 2) with an intuitive method of automatic painting. Again, as part of the body of work about human microbiome and gut feeling, this painting is focusing on the feedback loop between mind and gut how they each respond to outside stimuli and influence emotion. The starting point for this work was changing landscape during the half of the year between winter and summer solstice. I wished to display the classic vibrancy of spring but also the violence of growth with a composition of energetic forms escaping a void, mimicking undersea fissures believed to be a starting point in the evolution of life on Earth. I am an artist born in South Wales. After studying at University of South Wales and Winchester School of Art I am now based in Cardiff. Studies from life, automatic sketching, photography and found images are used in the process to create paintings and often stand as finished works in themselves. Producing pictures with a visual language or ‘style’ matters less to me than the vision I have for individual paintings and what I want them to communicate. A few days ago, I had the privilege of exploring Maui with an amazingly talented and knowledgeable artist/botanist, @davidshepardhawaii 🍃 David is not only a plant expert, spitting out scientific names for what seemed like every plant we passed, but also an incredible artist. We geeked out on plants and flowers at every stop we made, shared creative processes, and enjoyed everything nature had to offer that day. Wind, rain, sun, plants... life 💫 This is palapalai - a beautifully intricate lace fern. Patterns and details ever so delicate and structured. I’ve always been amazed by the pattern designs and color gradients on ferns. Thousands of different varieties and they all have such a unique and distinct design. Such as that of this unique hand-drawn Palapalai design by @davidshepardhawaii 🌱 He spends countless hours painstakingly drawing each tiny detail on every fern blade, perfecting the composition, and creating a beautiful color combination. For all the new followers asking about this look 👋🏻 This costume was originally created back in 2017 for a series of photographs I wanted to create. All 3 final pictures in this post are available as limited edition prints of edition of 30 that you can order through dm or my email or via my online shop linked in bio. Costume is made of leather that’s laced all the way through with floral appliqué and has painted elements. The headpiece is pointed shape inspired by shape of the Kokoshnik, (a tradional Russian headpiece).There are few cultures with a similar decorative pattern but the one that inspired me originally was on a black Khokhloma spoon. With my work I play on contrasts such as beauty and ugliness, femininity and aggression, ancient and modern, history and tales. Taking the look in the darker direction I linked it to black leather creating a character that is potentially alien shaped with long head and legs emphasised by heelless shoes. After all that the character got a nickname Floral Alien. Character also figuratively represents death itself, like a body that decomposes on the ground, that grows flowers out of it, eventually starting a new cycle of life. Like with many of the projects I work on a sketch and moodpboard and bring my ideas to @monikabereza who is a problem solving construction wizard who has been helping me bring my costume ideas to life for over 5 years now. I often paint over the structure of the costume with a pattern or illustration. In late January, when hospitals in the United States confirmed the presence of the novel #coronavirus, health workers knew to watch for precisely three symptoms: fever, cough, and shortness of breath. But as the number of infections climbed, the symptom list began to grow. Some patients lost their sense of smell and taste. Some had nausea or diarrhea. Some had arrhythmias or even heart attacks. Some had damaged kidneys or livers. Some had headaches, blood clots, rashes, swelling, or strokes. Many had no symptoms at all. . When UCSF researchers tested people for SARS-CoV-2 in San Francisco’s Mission District, 53% of those infected never had any symptoms. “That’s much higher than expected,” says Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, a UCSF professor of medicine with expertise in HIV. Surveys of outbreaks in nursing homes and prisons show similar or even higher numbers. “If we did a mass testing campaign on 300 million Americans right now, I think the rate of asymptomatic infection would be somewhere between 50% and 80% of cases,” Gandhi says. Millions of people may be spreading the virus without knowing it, she points out, making asymptomatic transmission the Achilles’ heel of efforts to control the pandemic – and highlighting the importance of universal masking. .
