One of our distinguished #WSSUAlumni celebrated a major milestone birthday earlier this month. Gloria Banks shared with us that her big brother, Dr. Edward O. Diggs celebrated his 100th birthday on June 6, 2020. Notably, he was the first African American person admitted to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He currently lives in Silver Spring, MD. Happy belated birthday, Dr. Diggs Here is a picture of Edward O. Diggs and family, c. 1951. Diggs, an alumnus of Winston-Salem Teachers College, was the first African American admitted to the University of North Carolina Medical School. From left to right are the Diggs children: Beverly Elise; Sharon Patrice; Edward O., II; Dr. Diggs wife Hazel G.; and Edward O. Diggs. - @wssu.alumni on Instagram

“I look back on my life with great joy. I think it was a very successful life. I always did what I wanted and never cared what anyone thought. Womens lib? I was a liberated woman long before there was a name for it.” - Peggy Guggenheim. After painful and isolating years of war in Europe, the Venice Art Biennale reopened in the summer of 1948. It was a historic event, celebrating not only international peace but also the end of fascism in Italy. Peggy Guggenheim’s astonishingly wide-ranging collection of modern art quickly became the main attraction and she decided to make Venice her home the following year. Leaving New York City’s mysoginistic and antisemitic environment where she struggled to be taken seriously, Venice relaunched Peggy’s life. The city promised her a more civilised welcome and, after much house-hunting, she found a vacant palazzo on the eastern stretch of the Grand Canal which she kept open to visitors every summer. To this day, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of the most visited museums in Venice and boasts of masterpieces by Magritte, Picasso, Pollock, Calder and many more. - @nahmadprojects on Instagram

Today is @lizcooperandthestampede’s 28th birthday. I love this photo because it is two self-portraits accidentally double exposed from two distinctly different emotional moments in the last five months. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather share five months laughing, crying, and laugh-crying in a 700-square foot box with than you, my friend. Cheers to another trip around the sun, even though you hate the sun. - @caraschmara on Instagram

Hillsborough Street IHOP owner Mark Seidenstein and Ms. Blueberry (left) are seen on the 20th anniversary of the restaurant’s opening, 21 March 1987. Seidenstein, an NCSU engineering school graduate, opened the franchise in March 1967 and never looked back. In the News and Observer article written at the time of this photo, Seidenstein is quoted, “If you want to study people, just sit in here.” The first Raleigh IHOP apparently saw its fair share of celebrities too. Liberace loved the pancakes so much, he visited twice in one day. Author David Sedaris frequented this IHOP from 1979-1983, writing, reading and smoking--it is mentioned in many of his journal entries. George Carlin and Roy Rodgers also dined under its blue tile roof. To celebrate the restaurant’s 20th anniversary, 10 couples competed in a 30-minute pancake eating contest. Prizes included record players, portable TVs and clock radios. In 2007 Charlotte-based developer FMW purchased the building and land for future development. The restaurant continued to operate for another nine years, eventually closing in 2016. The building is now slated for demolition. _________________ NO.59999.IHOP From the N&O negative collection, State Archives of North Carolina. Photo copyrighted by the Raleigh News and Observer.
