Ugolino and His Sons was carved in the 1860s by the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The marble sculpture depicts the suffering of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca and his sons and grandsons, who surround him. The subject is derived from a passage in Dante’s “Inferno,” in which Ugolino was locked in a tower with his kin and condemned to starve to death after committing treachery. In this sculpture, we witness Ugolino overcome by hesitation and insanity as he gnaws at his own fingers and contemplates eating the flesh of his offspring. The human emotion on display is so intense that you almost forget for a moment that the figures are made of marble. Exposition « Art et anatomie : dessins croisés » DERNIER JOUR ✏️ L’exposition Art et anatomie est encore visible aujourdhui ! Dans le cadre des 800 ans de la Faculté de Médecine de Montpellier, «Art et anatomie : dessins croisés » propose une découverte inédite des dessins scientifiques et artistiques qui ont collaboré à l’apprentissage du corps humain. Les cours de dessin anatomique s’imposent au cœur de la formation artistique, dès le XVIe siècle en Italie et au XVIIe siècle en France. L’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture structure alors les enseignements artistiques. L’ensemble des savoirs convergent vers la représentation du corps humain dans laquelle il faut exceller si l’on prétend devenir artiste. Les élèves doivent d’abord se plier à un apprentissage long pour enfin accéder à l’exercice d’après le modèle vivant, essentiellement nu et masculin. Si les modèles adoptaient des postures souvent codifiées, ils pouvaient être poussés à poser au bord du déséquilibre pour mettre à l’épreuve la virtuosité des étudiants.
