Could you eat that?! - ORMERS - HALIOTIS TUBERCULATA are considered a great delicacy and overfishing has led to a dramatic depletion in numbers since the latter half of the 19th century. Ormering is now strictly regulated in order to preserve stocks. The gathering of ormers is now restricted to a number of ormering tides, from January 1 to April 30, which occur on the full or new moon and two days following that. No ormers may be taken from the beach that are under 80 mm in shell length. Gatherers are not allowed to wear wetsuits or even put their heads underwater. Baby Christmas Island Red Crab on my finger! Amazingly, no one knows where these adorable little critters hang out for the month of their life!!! One month before I took this, one of the largest animal migrations on Earth was in full swing: Some 40-million red crabs had emerged from their jungle borrows on this tropical paradise and made their way down to the coast to mate, then all spawn billions of eggs into sea together at the turn of the tide one very special morning. The eggs hatch instantly and are washed out to see as tiny plankton-like whirlygigs. But where do those that are not swallowed by the waiting whale sharks, go? No one knows. Do they drift way out on ocean currents, or do they hang around down deep somewhere locally? Four weeks later, theyre much larger and have morphed into their megalope stage - a bit like a cross between a prawn and a crab – and suddenly millions and millions of them turn up one morning, carpeting the shoreline red as they moult into these cute mini crabs and scurry upwards into the jungle. Some years almost none return, others (like this recent season) were absolutely epic, the biggest ever. Sometimes a few wash up on Cocos (keeling) Island almost 1000km away, so maybe they are out there in the big blue sea, at the mercy of ocean currents and some years the current just doesnt bring many back? Who knows? Its a big mystery here. A few years back, during the baby crab return, some scuba divers came upon immense underwater clouds of the megalopes, just hanging off one the many km of world-class drop-off dive walls here. They said it was such a dense congregation that reaching in, their whole arm would disappear inside the mass. Had they just risen from deeper down, or just drifted in, what brought them together? Why was nothing (except whale sharks) eating them? So fascinating. I love this place. @australiangeographic @australia @bbcearth @bbc_travel #postcardsfromtheworld #optoutside #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #travelbug #wanderlust #momentsofmine #placestovisit #earth #ocean @destination.earth #Destinationearth #earthfocus @epicexplorepage #ourplanetdaily #earthmood #travel #EarthCapture #earthpix - @chrisbrayphotography on Instagram

We found this beautiful #seahorse on this morning’s dive at #blueheronbridge. This is one of the prettiest seahorses that I’ve seen. I love his bright orange color! . . Seahorse populations are threatened by unsustainable fishing practices, namely trawling, as well as being dried and sold as traditional medicine and being caught for the aquarium trade. . . But there are ways you can help!! You can become a citizen scientist and report your seahorse sightings. @projectseahorse has a fantastic website that has great information. You can also make sustainable seafood choices and advocate for more protected areas. . . #seahorses #uwphotography #macrophotography #diveflorida #marinebiology #conservation #girlsthatscuba #muckdiving - @floridamantagirl on Instagram

Check out the sharp-shoulders. Think about plants, they cant move, they appear to be completely defenseless to anything that wants to eat them up, sip their fluids, burrow in or other wise use in unfriendly ways. Tiny Pea Crabs 🦀 from the Southern New Zealand waters are making their menu debut next week. I have been working on sourcing this product fresh / live for the past few years and finally we have them for the season. So tiny and special while packing an intense sweet crab favour. We are frying them in crab fat and remind me of tiny soft shell crabs. Growing up in the far north my brother and I would get taken out to the black rocks by my father thrown in the crazy sea and rip green lip mussels off the rocks for the family to eat. Every 10 or so mussels we ate then one would find a pea crab in the mussel it was known as good luck and we always ate them with a smile. - @chefvaughanmabee on Instagram

I am REALLY excited about horseshoe crabs today so here are a few interesting facts about them. Horseshoe crabs are not crabs at all and are actually more closely related to spiders than they are to any crab or lobster. There are 4 species still living today, Limulus polyphemus being the only species we see here in North America (pictured). Horseshoe crabs are ANCIENT and we know that because they have very few physical changes compared to ancestral versions of themselves dating back 450 MILLION YEARS in the fossil records. Scientists believe this is because their body structure is extremely effective for survival. They are shaped like a tank, their shell consisting of three parts: The prosoma (front shell), the opisthosoma (back shell) and the telson (tail). In the second photograph you can see their book gills (looks like coiled up wire) that they use to breathe. Their shell is protective but it also has nerve endings that make it sensitive to the world around them. They also have TEN EYES and despite having a spiky tail they are TOTALLY HARMLESS (they do not have a tail like a sting ray). Horshoe crabs have copper based blood that is actually blue and very valuable to the biomedical field because it contains a unique compound called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate that coagulates in the presence of certain bacterial toxins and is used to test for the presence of these toxins. Horseshoe crabs crawl onto the beach to mate and lay eggs, which is what I assume this female was doing. They are very important to the environment as their eggs are an invaluable food source to shore birds. BE NICE TO HORSESHOE CRABS ❤ If you have to pick one up to move them from danger pick them up by either side of their shell (like a sandwich), not by their tail as this can harm them. - @denuncias.ambientales on Instagram

- @marcheplace on Instagram

#ScienceSunday -- Despite its name, horseshoe crabs are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than crabs. These creatures are sometimes called “living fossils” because they have been around in some form for more than 450 million years. Scientifically known as the genus Xiphosura, they were related to #arachnids in some way. While most arachnids live on land, a number of them live in the water. Horseshoe crabs play a vital role in the life of anyone who has received an injectable medication because their distinctive blue blood is used to detect dangerous gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli) and they have a unique and invaluable talent for finding infection, and that has driven up an insatiable demand in the medical industry. #Stream2Sea #ProtectWhatYouLove #scientificfacts #horseshoecrabs #blueblood - @stream2sea on Instagram

Caterpillar of the Day Follow Along: Weekend Days 260/261⠀ ⠀ Meet the Maple Looper Caterpillar, Parallelia bistriaris.⠀ ⠀ The maple looper is easily overlooked, both as a frosted green early instar resting along maple leaf veins, and as a striated brown or gray final instar pressed against twigs and bark. Still, I have found them to be one of the most common caterpillars on summertime maples and a quick shake of a branch over a white sheet often produces a few. Careful with common names like looper which has been applied to caterpillars from at least three major moth families. The maple looper is in the family Erebidae, related to moths like underwings and Zales, and not at all related to the inchworm or vegetable patch loopers.⠀ ⠀ Raising caterpillars often yields surprises - things you would never discover through outdoor observation alone. Immediately after the maple looper pupates, the fresh pupa is smooth and dark brown like many others, but within hours it develops a thick frosty white powder across its entire surface. We have seen this feature in a few other groups including the Catocala underwings and Drepana hooktips, but the maple loopers frosting is by far the most extreme we have observed.⠀ ⠀ Is anyone out there in caterpillar-land aware of how this frosting is generated and what purpose it plays?⠀ ⠀ --------⠀ Caterpillar: Maple Looper Caterpillar; Paralleia bistriaris⠀ ⠀ Range: Eastern North America⠀ ⠀ Host plants: broad generalists on a variety of plants; maple is a favorite⠀ ⠀ Season: Caterpillars throughout the summer with two generations in many locations⠀ ⠀ Where are they now: Overwintering as pupa in loose cocoons (likely in the leaf litter)⠀ --------⠀ ⠀ #moths #mothsofinstagram #thecaterpillarlab #caterpillar #caterpillars #nature #naturephotography #science #entomology #lepidoptera #scienceeducation #naturalhistory #art #artandscience #buglife #exciting #insects #bugs #insectsofinstagram #followalong #lifecycle #2020 #macrophotography #insectphotography - @the_caterpillar_lab on Instagram

- The Cymothoa Exigua is a parasitic crustacean that infiltrates a fish through its gills and then devours the tongue and replaces it with itself to then eat the hosts food as well.

Saddleback caterpillar (Acharia stimulea) Kingdom:Animalia Phylum:Arthropoda Class:Insecta Order:Lepidoptera Family:Limacodidae Genus:Acharia Species:A. stimulea The saddleback caterpillar (Acharia stimulea, formerly Sibine stimulea) is the larva of a species of moth native to eastern North America. It is also found in Mexico. It occurs south of the Yucatan. The species belongs to the family of slug caterpillars, Limacodidae. The caterpillar is primarily green with brown at either end and a prominent white-ringed brown dot in the center which resembles a saddle. It has a pair of fleshy horns at either end. These and most of the rest of the body bear urticating hairs that secrete an irritating venom. Contact with the hairs causes a painful, swollen rash and sometimes nausea in humans. In some cases, more severe reactions to the venom can occur. These reactions include a systemic condition called erucism or acute urticaria, for which severe symptoms may include migraines, gastrointestinal symptoms, asthma complications, anaphylactic shock, rupturing of erythrocytes, and hemorrhaging. The hairs should be removed from the skin immediately to prevent more venom spread. Cocoon may also have irritating hairs and hairs from the larva can fall on surrounding objects. The larvae feed on a large variety of plants. In Florida and Alabama in the United States, it feeds on ornamental palms such as the Manila palm (Adonidia merrillii). Acharia stimulea exhibits aposematic coloring which is a distinct vibrant coloring that represents their toxicity. Along the anterior, posterior and skirt of the caterpillar are tubercles that contain threatening hollow spines. While these spines are threatening alone, they actually go a step further in acting as a defense mechanism as they are connected to a gland that secretes venom that, when broken, is released into predators or unsuspecting gardeners. These spines are usually orange along the skirt of the caterpillar and orange or black along the tentacles present at both ends of the body. The larvae will use this defensively by curling outwards so that their spines are unavoidable to a predator. - @insecta_world on Instagram

Dumbo Octopus . Grimpoteuthis is a genus of pelagic umbrella octopuses known as the dumbo octopuses. The name dumbo originates from their resemblance to the title character of Disneys 1941 film Dumbo, having a prominent ear-like fin which extends from the mantle above each eye. There are 13 species recognized in the genus. Prey include crustaceans, bivalves, worms and copepods. The average life span of various Grimpoteuthis species is 3 to 5 years. . Dorsal (left) and ventral (right) aspects of a mature female of G. innominata (73 mm ML) Most species of Grimpoteuthis live at depths of at least 3,000 to 4,000 metres (9,800 to 13,100 ft) with some living up to 7,000 metres (23,000 ft) below sea level, which is the deepest of any known octopus. They are some of the rarest of the Octopoda species though they occur worldwide including in the waters of New Zealand, Australia, Monterey Bay, Oregon, Philippines, Marthas Vineyard, Papua New Guinea and Azores. The largest dumbo octopus ever recorded was 1.8 metres (5.9 ft) in length and weighed 5.9 kilograms (13 lb). The average size for most species is 20–30 centimetres (7.9–12 in) in length. The average weight is still undetermined. . . #octopus #DumboOctopus #Grimpoteuthis #umbrellaoctopuses #dumbo #Octopoda #NewZealand #MontereyBay #Oregon #Philippines #PapuaNewGuinea #squid #Scuba #cephalopod #marines #NatGeo #WIldLife #discoverocean #Scubadiving #usa #unitedstates #unitedkingdom #canada #australia #newyork #france #italy #Japan #london #russia - @octopusfansclub on Instagram

This little parasite might not seem like a big deal. Its kind of cute at first. But it surprised scientists when they found it where it wasnt supposed to be. Orthione griffenis, a cough drop-sized crustacean native to Asia and Russia, has decimated mud shrimp populations in California and Washington over the past 30 years, causing the collapse of delicate mudflat ecosystems anchored by the shrimp. Researchers identified the intruder during a 2017 marine bioblitz organized by @hakaiinstitute and Smithsonian MarineGEO. These surveys can act as early warning systems for invasive species, said Gustav Paulay. “If you catch them early enough, you have a chance to do something about it.” Most scientists believed the parasites’ expansion was exclusively mediated by human transport – O. griffenis is thought to have first arrived in North America by traveling in ships’ ballast water. Their appearance at Calvert Island, 150 miles from the nearest city of more than 5,000 people, was unexpected. [Story link in bio] - @floridamuseum on Instagram
