We moved out of #portland #oregon to #rainier Oregon. I’m still working @nossafamiliacoffee as director of coffee and I am still consulting... but the last few weeks and the next few weeks I will be a bit touch and go as we settle in. CW: Death - in words and images. Ive been meditating on whether to share this. Because its so personal. And so taboo. Death might be the deepest tabboo in american culture. I think it would do us all a lot of good to think about, talk about, show, and share death a lot more. We made the decision to bury Genius at home, on our own terms, with our own hands. In Jewish tradition, the dead are buried in untreated pine boxes (no metal hardware), so the bodies and the boxes can be returned to the earth. Its also tradition for family and loved ones to dig the burial hole and shovel the dirt back in themselves. (Today, cemeteries handle the digging, and loved ones can put back as much dirt as they want or are physically able). I love this tradition, and knew the physical act of love and care and exertion would be important in the process of grieving and letting go. Im so grateful to @cvrobe for constructing a beautiful simple box for G. And to our friends @empressdarlingshear, @md2020_facetat_on_a_dog , and @gabygoo2 for helping us dig the hole. And @alyssahydemartinez and Asher for helping us say goodbye and also remember G all the time. I love these photographs. Documentation and working with images is a way for me to process experiences. I took that photo of G standing in the spot I knew we would bury him a few days before he passed. Im so grateful we had the foresight, agency, resources, and support to care for Genius and ourselves in this way. It was so intimate, and slow, and loving. There was nothing traumatic about it. It has allowed me real peace and closure. This process has also made me think even more critically about how we handle the death of human loved ones. The last slide is a note about that, which I was not aware of until recently. When youve used up your time for the day it cuts you off. 2. Make a commitment and put it in your calendar as it’s more than likely to happen. 3. Listen to your body and take rest days when your not feeling yourself. I’ve been trying to go for regular massages and acupuncture and what a difference it’s making. This is the first Bronte has been sick really. She’s had a few runny noses but nothing major so weirdly, thanks to Covid, she’s been pretty well despite having two big sisters. Poor little thing has croup and these long nights and early mornings used to be such a source of stress and anxiety for me. I’m slowly learning to enjoy the quiet. A place to call home! This has been a 9 month tree change dream that finally came to fruition today. We swapped the bright city lights of Sydney for a quiet county town in Central Victoria,with a population of 1200, and now, after a few months of living with our amazing family, we have the keys to our very own home. Loving the rural life and all the extra space our new 1 acre block provides us. I’ve decided to take a more humble and accepting approach to this than I may have in the past. I would have regaled against the lack of fresh air, campaigned to move, and probably been successful. Then after all that energy would have most likely wished I’d stayed where I was. I’m listening to Russell Brand. Its a retreat. I’ve a kettle and an iron to cook on, a fantastic hot shower and a comfortable bed. What I mistook for deprivation and bad design is in fact simplicity. I’m allowed up in the roof twice a day for air and sunshine and I’ve made the right choice about being on this side of the hotel. I had a coffee delivered to my room this morning. I didn’t ask for a piccolo instead deciding to enjoy what I got because the person offering to make it was so lovely. I feel I should have been forced into this some years ago. I’m lucky @e_war_photo is at home looking after our children, they are all well, it’s holidays and the dog is going off to boot camp. @lilytstewart is well and happy and when I spoke to my brother yesterday he commented that I didn’t sound distracted as I can so often be. I hated 7th grade. I was chubby, had very few friends, and couldnt quite decide if I wanted to grow up or remain a child. Before my 13th birthday, my mom asked what kind of birthday party I wanted: a sleepover, pool party, movies? I told her I didnt want a party at all because I didnt have friends to invite. It kind of broke her heart. . . . Instead of a party, she suggested my brother and I have a fun, independent night in the guest house, watch a movie (The Blob) and eat pizza, which we did. The next morning, I walked into the main house to find my parents looking a little bleary-eyed, sitting on the couch and drinking coffee. My mom told me to go look at my room. When I did, the transformation blew me away: pale pink walls, white crown, a new daybed with a puffy white comforter, and everything fresh and perfect. Overnight, my parents had primed and painted my walls, assembled a bed, and made my room look like a fantasy land. I even got my own phone. I didnt feel so alone anymore. . . . My parents didnt have a lot, but what they did have, they maximized. Through my room, they made me feel loved and special that day. I got to do this recently for my own kids, and its almost more magical on this side of the transaction. I love watching them get cozy in their spaces, especially now that theyre spending so much more time there. . . .
