Gene told me that Tamara Toumanova was living in the Hotel Princess Elizabeth when he met with her to discuss her being in Invitation to the Dance. He said phone service was so bad in those days that everything had to be done by wires. Toumanova said, “Please come see me. I want to be in this movie!” So Gene flew to Paris to meet with her. As he said, I had a place for her. I was going to dance with Diana Adams and she was going to do the next thing with another guy.” But Toumanova said she would not do the movie unless she danced with Gene. “So I had to make the switch,” he explained. “Then she had, I think, only two and a half weeks. But I was so anxious to get her. She was one of the famous ‘baby ballerinas’ and the epitome of star class in the ballet world. I played with chalk pastels on cardboard this morning, and it felt so good. I then added to the drawings in Photoshop a little. I’ve included the final and original versions. I’m trying to actively change the way I think about illustrating; it’s imperative if I’m to stay in this field for the long haul, which I want to. For too long I’ve been focusing on the outcome of my work, and not enjoying the process as much. I’m learning that I want to be happy in my day to day life not because I made a piece I like, but because I created in general, the act of making art at all. It’s a big shift, but ultimately one that will lead to more peace and joy in my life I think. I hope you all are able to enjoy the process of creating itself, no matter what you do. One of our distinguished #WSSUAlumni celebrated a major milestone birthday earlier this month. Gloria Banks shared with us that her big brother, Dr. Edward O. Diggs celebrated his 100th birthday on June 6, 2020. Notably, he was the first African American person admitted to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He currently lives in Silver Spring, MD.
