Today also marks twelve years since we lost John Marcum, AKA, Dusty, one of the most talented and fearless SEALs I have known. If you knew Dusty, you know how and when he received his nickname! The last time I saw Dusty we were on the airfield at Bagram doing a transfer ceremony for Josh Harris, another SEAL who had recently been lost there. I was flying back with the guys for a quick turnaround to return to Afghanistan in a few months, and we would be attending Joshs funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. I drove to Arlington, Virginia in preparation for a team of us to attend the service. It was about 10pm and I had just had dinner with Collin Thomas, who would also be killed two years later, when my phone rang with a satellite number I knew to have originated in Afghanistan. I was told Dusty was gone that night, and the news was crushing. He was a remarkable person, and he could make anyone laugh. I quickly grabbed my stuff from the hotel room in Arlington and drove back to Virginia Beach, only to get on a plane bound for Dustys home town in Michigan. I was one of the ones who stood in front of Dustys parents that next morning, in uniform. To say it was heartbreaking is an understatement, as so many of us know who have had to do this. Only a few weeks after Dustys passing, Cindy died too, she couldnt take the tragic loss. They were buried side-by-side in 2008, where they now rest. The sacrifices are real, and the people weve lost were extraordinary. I worry that they have been influenced by older generations to have such hatred and warped views in relation to womxn. I worry that they have never been educated on how to talk, interact and respect womxn. I worry for there future partners. I worry that they will treat them unkindly and in a disgusting manner. I worry for the people around them. That they will listen to the way they speak about womxn’s bodies and therefore be influenced to believe that this is normal and acceptable. I worry for there future children, the next generation whom I hope doesn’t struggle the way I did with body image. I worry for every womxn, young or old who reads these comments and feels utter disgust, worry, fear and shame. I know it feels like there minds can’t be changed but we will try. I worry because the majority of the comments left on my photos are from school aged children. A generation whom is so easily influenced and manipulated. I worry because they must have such low self esteem and therefore believe others need to be like them. They view confidence and self love as a treat and are intimidated by it. This is not okay. It’s not okay for children and adults to be disrespecting womxn. It’s not okay for men to talk about womxn’s bodies in an unkind and disgusting manner. Unsolicited body shaming 🌿 Society has normalized harassment and bullying on social media. These are comments I found while scrolling through social media today. There were worse, disgusting ones but I decided against including them. I’ve seen people post similar photos to this and seen the comments say “if you can’t take the hate then you shouldn’t be on social media”. But when and why did it become acceptable and okay to send hate and make unsolicited statements about people’s bodies? I worry about the people who comment these things. I worry about the shame, embarrassment and fear that people feel when they read these comments. How has it become okay and normal to make other people feel harassed, fearful, ashamed and insecure? These comments don’t come out of no where. They are a product of our surroundings. . There’s so many conflicting things society has taught us; what to do, to say, to wear, or ways to behave. There’s so many conflicting opinions. But there is a difference between advice and straight up hating on people and I’m sure we all know that. But some of us mask this and play it off as “a joke” or “trolling” or pretending to care for someone’s health/wellbeing but in actuality the main incentive is to shame the person. The people who comment these things typically project their insecurities and are intimidated or jealous of something which triggers this hate response. For example, someone’s confidence in being themselves or loving and accepting themselves. These unsolicited negative comments are aimed to tear an individual down in order for the commenter to feel better about themselves and regain some form of subconscious power. . I send all the love and healing to those who made these comments. Toxic Masculinity. The pressure men face to conform to our society’s idea of masculinity. It demands that men shun self-expression and vulnerability. It asks men to bottle up their emotions, to be brave 100% of the time, and to never diverge from society’s expectations of manliness. This photo was taken off me this morning. Is it feminine ? is it manly? is it gay? Im not gay, I am a straight male. But do I care if I look gay or If I look vulnerable? No. Because I am vulnerable right now. I am in the middle of recovering from anorexia but that doesn’t take away from me being a man. Ive cried today over the thought of food and I was anxious today over the thought of sharing this post and thinking how will people perceive me? Why should any of this matter. This is masculine. If you want to be gay if you want to wear makeup if you want to just have girls as friends why is this seen as being a “pussy” or being a “beta male” why should we have to conform to society’s previous views. If you want to be a caveman and sexualise every woman you see and suppress any and every bit of emotion and hide it with violence so be it. But youre not a real man. fyi the captions in the photo represent what men get told and what men see everyday. A lot of the things in the this post that I listed was things I was told and have experienced so this is a personal one for me.
