Josep Lluís Sert i López was a Spanish / Catalan architect and city planner born in Barcelona, Catalonia After graduation from the School of Architecture, Barcelona (1929), Sert worked with Le Corbusier and in Paris. From 1929 to 1937 he had his own architectural office in Barcelona; works from the period include apartment houses in Barcelona, weekend houses in Garraf, and a master plan for the city of Barcelona. He designed the Spanish pavilion at the Paris World’s Fair (1937) in collaboration with Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, and Pablo Picasso. With the fall of Spain’s Republican government in 1939, Sert moved to the United States and from 1941 to 1956 was a partner in Town Planning Associates, a New York City firm that engaged in city planning and urban design for a number of new or existing South American cities, including Bogotá and other Colombian cities, Chimbote in Peru, Ciudad dos Motores in Brazil, and Havana. Sert’s master plans for these sites were notable for their integration of natural landscape features into the urban building scheme. Sert made prominent use of patios and other aspects of Mediterranean architecture in his innovative designs for large groupings of houses. From 1947 to 1956 Sert was president of CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne). He became a U.S. citizen in 1951. In 1953 he was appointed dean of the Graduate School of Design and professor of architecture at Harvard University, a position he held until his retirement in 1969. Posteriormente, fue médico director de las leproserías nacionales, luego médico director de los Servicios Antileprosos Nacionales, y después médico jefe de la División de Lepra, con lo cual tenía la responsabilidad organizar toda la red nacional de lucha contra la lepra. Su vida la dedicó a la investigación científica. Siendo uno de sus mayores logros el desarrollo de la vacuna contra la lepra en 1987. ISRO to Restart Launching Space Satellites by First-Half of November 2020 The Luxembourg-based Kleos Space, a space-powered Radio Frequency Reconnaissance data-as-a-service (DaaS) company on Friday said its Kleos Scouting Mission satellites are expected to be launched during the first half of November 2020 by Indian rocket PSLV. The Company has been informed (by NSIL via Spaceflight Inc.) that the launch of the four Kleos satellites planned on-board PSLV-C49 mission is being targeted during the 1st half of November 2020, based on the current status of planning of activities. This schedule is subject to change due to operational circumstances beyond NSIL control, Kleos Space said. The rocket launch is done by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). We are facilitating commercial launches, G. Narayanan, Chairman and Managing Director, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) told IANS. The NSIL is a commercial space company under the Department of Space (DOS). According to Narayanan, the actual launch date of the rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C49) will be finalised ISRO. Kleos said it is launching the scouting satellites under a rideshare contract with Spaceflight Inc, with the launch managed by NSIL. The Kleos Scouting Missions four satellites have been mission-ready since the middle of 2019, and were shipped to the launch site (Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh) during February, anticipating the launch during March. Delay to the launch from March has been due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation, Kleos said. * sound on * Ive been itching to do a series on the countless artists that have contributed to the Hindi music scene, and I chose to begin the series with one of my favourite composers, Khayyam saab. The genius behind iconic songs like Aaja Re Mere Dilbar, Dikhai Diye Yun and Ae Dil-e-Nadan. These songs are just a few of the many gems this legend has composed, and through this post, I hope to take you through his journey and legacy as a musician. In Umrao Jaans director Muzzafar Alis words, Khayyam saab was a storehouse of feelings, emotions and music, and that translated into every work of his. Few people can boast of a career filled with hit after hit, and that leaves your soul yearning for more. A few weeks ago, I had shared a story about how distinct Khayyam saabs music is, and whilst I write this, I realise that albeit distinct, every composition had a striking difference in them. I cant point my finger to what it is in particular, but if you listen to his work intently, you will understand what I mean. I hope this post gives you a closer look into Khayyam saab and his magic. Today is Olaus Jeldness 164th Birthday! Normally, wed bring everyone together for a fun celebration at the Museum or at Rossland Beer Company to share Olaus and other ski history tales - this year, well have to stick with a virtual celebration. What was once heralded as a grande spectactor sport, ski jumping and downhill skiing are now massively popular sports enjoyed by many. In Rossland, this winter sport - now integral to the community spirit - was prompted by an enthusiastic Norwegian miner, Olaus Jeldness. Due to his passion and skills, the hills around are populated by people who love skiing and has developed our mountainside village into one of the provinces ski meccas. Here is to Olaus Jeldness!
