The college student sitting outside tapping into a buildings wifi to do her schoolwork brought to light the lack of access many local youth face. Narain and husband Matthew Spacie, after much thought and deliberation, decided to take the kids out of school this year, following a shift to Karjat during the lockdown. The couple found an office building not too far away from their home, where connectivity was decent. “But we had to walk a kilometre every day, through a jungle, to reach the building—I’d go back and forth six times a day, with different children for different classes. And all of this in the summer heat, with a stick in hand, because we had snakes coming out of everywhere…” “Home schooling she felt “was an opportunity to think about education differently, and be in a position to not complain about what you think your children should be learning, what they are learning, or what is amiss, because now, you are in control.” Narain isn’t the only parent to walk the wild side. A recent survey of 1,075 parents from across the United States, conducted by Morning Consult, a data intelligence and market research company, and published by The New York Times, revealed “that several families who didn’t home-school before the pandemic were surprised to find that, post-shutdown, their children seemed to do better outside a traditional school environment.” Among them is Delhi-based educator and heritage activist Vikramjit Singh Rooprai, who says he would have never considered home-schooling, had COVID-19 not made an unwelcome entry into their lives. “I don’t use the textbook at all, and that makes learning more fun,” he says. To drive his point home, he says he taught his daughter the concept of profit and loss by making her set up her own ‘restaurant’ at home, complete with branding and menu. At the end of the month, she returned the price of ingredients to him, keeping the profit. “Calculating profit percentage is something students of her class [Class V] will only learn in December. I had to go back and watch an old presidential debate just because I couldn’t imagine older debates were anywhere near what they are today. This Kennedy/Nixon first debate is the first one I came across. No interruptions. Very thoughtful and intelligent answers/responses so Americans really knew where candidates stood. Tonight’s debate was nothing more than embarrassing, IMO. 300M+ people in our country boiled down to 2 people and yet it’s so divisive that people are quick to judge who you really are based on which one of these 2 men you vote on. This was 8 years ago today. It’s one my favorite pictures of all time because it was taken mid epiphany at the exact moment I decided to drop out of college. I was leading this study group for a Criminal Law final, I had just finished filling up all these whiteboards and we were halfway through an all nighter. It was like 3am. At this point I had been uploading YouTube videos every Monday for over two years and that was all I could think about, so I had mentally checked out of school a while ago. I was already in a very fortunate position to be making money doing something I loved but I was still enrolled in classes because it felt like the right thing to do and I was scared to make that jump and ditch my safety net. But in this moment, all those words I had written on the boards started to blur together and a voice in my head asked me “Jimmy, what the fuck are you doing right now? Why are you spending all this time studying for a criminal law final? You don’t care about this. This isn’t you” and I agreed with that wholeheartedly because that voice was just me reminding myself what I already knew. So I packed up my backpack, announced to the study group that I was done with school and I left. They were pretty confused. I felt kinda bad leaving them hanging like that but it was the right move for me and in my defense, it was about time someone else in that study group stepped up. Wake Stone says that they have never faced a violation in all of their years of operation. Heres how they avoided it...⁠ ⁠ Exhibit A: In 1992 a rockslide triggered by a blast at Wake Stone resulted in a landslide that went into Crabtree Creek and covered 90% of the main channel.⁠ ⁠ That IS a violation of their permit.⁠ ⁠ But whats this? Its only deemed an OFFICIAL violation IF they dont fix what they broke. So they get a friendly letter from DEQ explaining how they can avoid getting into trouble. This is done AFTER Wake Stone has harmed the creek.⁠ ⁠ As we consider allowing them to expand consider that this is how business will continue. They will harm the environment first and then ask for forgiveness, but only if they are caught.⁠ ⁠ Thats how the whole industry is set up with DEQ. If you break the rules and violate your permit terms than you are sent a letter and told to clean up your mess. Only if you dont do that are you given an official strike it seems.⁠ ⁠ So as Sam Bratton goes around mouthing off about how spotless their record is, he is banking on how the industry allows his mine to operate with immunity...even though a truckload of complaints have been filed and investigated against the quarry. They could have a flyrock incident and probably hit a car...but as long as they paid for the damages, it doesnt go against them as a violation.⁠ ⁠ Exhibit B: See the attached letter written in 2001 by David Lee...it claims that they have never once allowed any sediment to enter Crabtree Creek. Its a bald faced lie and they know it. Because how about that 90% blockage of the creek back in 1992? But they are allowed to claim it as true because of the way our system is set up.⁠ ⁠ The bottomline is that this system is not designed to protect Crabtree Creek or Umstead Park one bit. What we have here is a situation where DEQ and Wake Stone will let things happen and look the other way. We have to say no to this new quarry and YES to Wake Stone having their current mine closed down according to the Sunset Clause agreement that they signed.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ ⁣⁠ ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ - @rduforest on Instagram

The film introduces a protagonist played by Guadeloupean actor Robert Liensol (also a lead character in Hondo’s West Indies’) who relocates to Paris, France convinced that he will settle into the comfortable life promised back home. On arrival, he realises quickly that bureaucratic indifference, unemployment and disenfranchisement, all residues of colonialism’s unceasing architecture, are core to migrant lives in France. Hondo’s experimental approach forms a scattering narrative in its exposure and critique of Western Capitalism moreover its relations to anti-Blackness. Both are equally relevant to our current moment as they were in the early 1960s.
