𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥⁣ ⁣ I got accepted to med school out of high school through whats known as a BS/MD program, which meant that I went straight from undergrad to med school without having to go through the traditional med school application process at the end of college. In the next series of posts, Ill address some common questions and discuss some of the pros and cons of going the BS/MD route!⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐒/𝐌𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐀/𝐌𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬?⁣ Basically, while you are applying for college as a high school senior, you are also applying to medical school at the same time. You have to interview both at the college and med school that is part of the program. If accepted, you are committing to go to that college and med school. Some programs require you graduate with a BS (bachelors of science) degree while others may also offer the option to graduate with a BA (bachelors of art) degree.⁣ ⁣ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐒/𝐌𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐀/𝐌𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬?⁣ -Most programs are 8 years total (4 yrs undergrad + 4 yrs med school).⁣ -There are a couple programs that are condensed into 6 yrs or 7 yrs (usually the undergrad years are shortened to 2-3 yrs while med school remains 4 yrs).⁣ ⁣ 𝐃𝐨 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐂𝐀𝐓?⁣ This largely depends on the program. Some programs dont require any MCAT, while others require you take the MCAT and obtain a score above a certain cutoff.⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞?⁣ Based on what I found from looking this up, the acceptance rate ranges from 1% at smaller top tier programs to around 9%.⁣ ⁣ 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬?⁣ Most programs have a minimum GPA requirement and certain classes that you must take while in undergrad. Briana (she/hers) is originally from Detroit, Michigan and she began organizing against criminalization and police brutality in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement as an undergraduate at Princeton University. Following her graduation, Briana moved to Chicago to work at the North Lawndale Employment Network, supporting their reentry services in areas heavily impacted by criminal legal system injustices. Since completing her fellowship, Briana has received her masters degree from the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, where she concentrated in policy and administration with a focus on justice system transformation. ⚖️The INEQUALITY of AVIATION⚖️ The vast majority of the world’s population has never set foot on a plane. Even here in Britain, where we fly more than any other nation, only around half of us board a flight in any given year. This starts to reveal the serious inequalities of aviation. The benefits of flying are experienced by a select few – yet the harm is felt by us ALL. Let’s start with TAXATION. The ‘free ride’ that airlines enjoy due to the fact that aviation fuel is not taxed adds up to the tune of £7bn PER YEAR (if this money was invested in railways, this would be enough to slash train fares by 2/3‼️). Governments depend on taxation to fund things such as health care and housing. If the money isn’t coming from industry taxes, it’s coming from us - ordinary taxpayers. This means that those who choose not to fly, or are unable to fly because of cost or circumstance, are SUBSIDISING the flights of the few. Then, we have the grave injustices of CLIMATE CHANGE 🌎. The people who are already suffering the devastating effects of a changing climate are the least responsible for causing it. People across the global south have been suffering for years – it is they, not us, who are forced to flee their homes and see their children starve. This is happening right now, and it is largely caused by our high-carbon, high consumption western lifestyles. Now, more than ever, we need to seriously consider our flights. Yes, for the emissions. Yes, to curb the spread of coronavirus. But mostly because we should understand how privileged we are to access air travel in the first place. To mis-quote a phrase, with great privilege comes great responsibility, and now would be a good time to start demonstrating that responsibility to the planet, and to each other. The final #SurvivorSaturday of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth is very special because its one of our own! Lauren Peyton was treated at #MSKKids, our pediatric program, when she was fourteen and is now a Clinical Nurse IV at #MSKMonmouth. She was first diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and later had myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Lauren needed a stem cell transplant and was matched with a donor from Germany. They were able to meet in person and are now close friends who text every day and even have matching tattoos to symbolize their connection! Lauren was inspired by her own nurses to become a nurse. She said, Every day I’m really grateful for everything MSK has done for me. Having that support behind you as a patient inspired me to provide that to people.” Lauren also added, What COVID has taught us, and what being a survivor has taught me, is that you can plan as much as you want but you cannot control what happens. This is Sandra Bland. In 2015, at the age of 28 years old she was pulled over in Waller County for failing to signal. The police officer got reallyyyy pissed bc she wasn’t worshipping the ground he walked on and didn’t want to put out her cigarette. She was detained and beaten. There is a video of the entire interaction if you’d like to see it for yourself. She was found dead hanging in her jail cell and her death was ruled a suicide. HOWEVER, it is believed that she was deceased at the time her mugshot was taken. You can google her mugshot to see for yourself and form your own opinion. . . Her case broke me. I was a Junior/Senior in College Station, Texas which is right up the street from Waller (a county KNOWN for their racial profiling) and saw myself in Sandra. I ranted to anyone who would listen (which wasn’t very many ppl since I was going to a predominantly white school and had predominantly white friends) about her death. I couldn’t believe it. It was so obvious that she was murdered and no one was going to do anything about it. If I was murdered.. no one was going to do anything about it. That’s when it all became crystal clear. If it could happen to her, it could happen to me. I wouldn’t be described as a kind person with so much potential. I’d be described as a twenty- something year old black woman who was behaving irrationally/aggressively and thus, deserved whatever happened next. This is why my dad always told me not to speed through Waller. This is why I was supposed to check in right when I got home. This is why my Granny always told me to be careful and RESPECTFUL if I ever got pulled over. It’s been 5 years and the death of Breona Taylor has a lot of young black girls realizing they could literally be SLEEPING in their OWN HOMES and doing everything right... and still wouldn’t get justice if murdered by police. . . Black lives matter just as much as anyone else’s. We shouldn’t have to feel petrified when getting pulled over. Our hearts shouldn’t start pacing at the sight of police officers. Happy Monday from clinical class (with covid precautions of course)! I planned on posting more but boy oh boy is graduate nursing school, mostly online, during a pandemic quite a feat! Apologies for the time in between posts 😂 So far our program has been predominantly online with Zoom synchronous lectures, meaning we all login and get a lecture in real time, and then we have rotating shifts of on campus clinical activities. Some days we do work on our own and check in but today was my on campus day! So here we are practicing intramuscular and subcutaneous injections on mannequins and giving oral medications. I find online learning difficult so I love being able to be hands on part of the week and physically practice what we’re learning. Today was really fun and I can’t wait to be back on campus Thursday. I’m officially certified in @davinci_teethwhitening! Yesterday was my only day off and we spent from sunrise to way past sunset painting and doing the floors in the new location. I came back at 7a today to add extra touches and then quickly headed to my training at 830a for the teeth whitening. Today I’m at work until 8p. I’m tired, I’m exhausted & the work is never done but I am so thankful for the people around me who constantly remind me that I’m a super hero. Female entrepreneur 🔥 Last weekend I also took my body contouring training. • ** 10/10 I don’t recommend taking two new courses while expanding into a second location, while having a stacked schedule of clients & while being a single mom. 😅 but I have such an amazing support system and team. My strategy this week is pretty straight forward: •Plan & prep as much as possible. •Prioritize work & school — IG can wait. •I’m new to the company & I have a LOT of learning to do in order to be proficient in my role. No messing around or “enjoy being a newbie” it’s time to get to work & put in that extra time if needed to get ahead. •Set boundaries with work & have a set schedule. •I took it upon myself to reach out to all my teammates & colleagues I’ll be working with to set up 1x1 connects to ensure we are familiar with each-other & start off on a good note. •Don’t shy away from turning that webcam on, we are working remotely & that human interaction is SUPER important. Believe it or not but it makes a huge impact on how a meeting goes. The eye contact and smiles are everything. •I don’t know it all & that’s okay. This is one thing I have to keep telling myself because I went from being an expert to um how do I connect to VPN? 🤣 •I told myself I needed to be open minded & agile. It can give two different people the same set of numbers, but each of them may respond differently. ⁣ A calculator doesn’t know your underlying health issues that can impact your progress⁣ ⁣ Now a coach technically is also making assumptions, but they are EDCUATED assumptions based on individual factors⁣ ⁣ A good coach will take your dieting history into account, your mindset and relationship with food into account, know what red flags to look for, ask the right questions to dig a little deeper to come up with the game plan that is going to work for you.⁣ ⁣ A good coach is also more than just macro protocols. We can work on deeper goals like your relationship with food and improving daily habits.⁣ ⁣ You get progressive adjustments that will keep you moving forward towards your goal, and the accountability to keep you going when you start to doubt yourself. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the bodys immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before. The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.) Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress increases the chance of illness. (PART 2 of a two part post) . Many don’t know the sacrifices, pain, & struggles of being an immigrant in this country. Becoming a citizen isn’t cheap. Families can spend up to 100K when you combine the lawyer fees, paperwork and documentation . Imagine having having to pay all of that while still having to provide basic things like food, shelter and clothing for your family. & then on top of that you can’t work the jobs that would pay you what you deserve because you don’t have the papers. So when many right wingers say “why don’t you just take the test” it’s not that simple. The test is like level 50 on the game, when many can’t even afford to play or buy the gaming system. . Immigrants from the old school like my parents don’t usually see or understand the depth of racism and the social structures between the black and white race because black Americans still have more opportunities being born here. & that’s why even amongst the black race with africian Americans and blacks from other continents (Africa & South America) their is a separation because although we are the same, we are different because of our experiences and history in this country. . However since I’m technically a first generation American raised here I had to learn the history of this country because at the end of the day people will not see me as Guyanese but as A BLACK WOMAN. I’ve seen both sides of the coin. The beauties and dreams my family believed would come true like going to the White House, and graduating from college and the pain that being black in America comes with like watching the countless murders and systematic oppression that my people face daily. Last nights debate was unreal. Is this what the land of the free and home of the brave has come to? Is this what I have took an oath to and my family has scarified so much for? . All I can do is continue to pray, work hard, love, create a life worth living for myself and my family and remember that although this is my story this land isn’t even my home. They are on the front line for all first responders in Flagler County. “To do back-to-back lifesaving events is testament to her ability as a dispatcher and a prime example of what our dispatchers do day in and day out.” Davis said there are no typical days in dispatch. “No routine call is ever a routine call,” she said. This year has been the most transformative year of my life. I have found another family so quickly, and the bonds I have made with each person on the team could never be replicated. Even on the most stressful days, these people made me feel so at peace and loved. I will never forget my time here and the memories and (absurd number of) laughs we shared will always hold a special place in my heart. I learned so many things about how to be a physician who goes out of their way to show that they truly care about each patient and how to create a workplace where no one feels alone in anything they do. Next up on #BFDUKfeature is Dr Marilyn @missmarilynb. • Dr. Marilyn is a trainee anaesthetist currently working in the NHS. She trained at @StGeorgesUniOfLondon and gained an intercalated BSc in physiology from @King_College_London along the way. • Marilyn spent her years as a foundation doctor working in the South Thames Deanery and took an F3 year out following where she explored the world and confirmed anaesthesia as her speciality of choice. She also had her first experience working in the developing world as a volunteer in Chad, which ignited her passion for global health. • She completed her core anaesthetic training in the East of England and is currently working as a senior clinical fellow in intensive care. She has a special interest in teaching and mentorship, with hopes to contribute to developing world anaesthesia in the future. • Marilyn believes representation matters and advocates to see more female black doctors in anaesthesia. She told us: “It’s crazy to think I’d never met a black anaesthetic consultant until my F3 year. As an F2 I had been told to rethink a career in anaesthesia by my clinical supervisor. I really lost confidence and began to doubt it was the right choice for me. Meeting someone who looked like me and was encouraging me to pursue anaesthesia really gave me the confidence boost I needed.” • Marilyn has given many career talks inspiring black youths to pursue medicine and a career in anaesthesia. • Aside from work she enjoys travelling, reading, food and is involved in the young adults department of her church. Meet Sierra Atwater. Sierra is originally from a small town near Chapel Hill called Pittsboro, NC. She was a Bio major and Chem minor at UNC for undergrad, and she also volunteered at the UNC pediatric hospital. Her parents are Pharmacists and she has a younger brother whom is currently applying to med school himself. Sierra was the first in her family to leave the country. She worked in Nicaragua with the Global Medical Brigades Program, and she later went to South Africa and worked to implement science education for middle school girls. Sierra is an extrovert and recharges and energizes herself by being around other people. I have to say, also, that it is recharging and energizing just to be around Sierra! Everywhere we went while taking these photos, there were so many people coming up to say “hi” to Sierra and give her compliments. She is clearly well liked, appreciated and championed by her colleagues and co-students. Sierra loves trying new restaurants with friends and going with them to all sorts of the fun NC events going on year-round. A recent highlight for Sierra was going to the Black August in the Park, here in Durham. She is drawn to good food, great people, and fun times. Sierra has a great energy. She is the type of person that as you get to know, you want to know more. She is very kind, empathetic, and fun to be around. Those are all important traits to look for in a good friend, and a great doctor. We here at the Duke MD program are looking forward to watching Sierra’s continued growth as she enters the healthcare field, and we are lucky to have her here as a member of our community. Welcome your “new normal” 🤪⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦 𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑒: the way I studied during undergraduate definitely did not translate over to dental school. Don’t be afraid to explore new ways to study (whether if it’s alone, with friends, on your ipad, handwritten , etc.)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ 𝐹𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑡ℎ: don’t ever compare yourself to your classmates. Everyone is in a different part of their dental journey, and there’s no reason to feel like you’re not “good enough.” We all start somewhere. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ 𝐷𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑓𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑠𝑘 𝑓𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝! Most dental schools (to my knowledge) have some sort of Big-little system set up. ASK them for advice if you need any! They’ve been through everything you’ve been through— so more likely than not, they’ll have some decent advice on how to survive 👍🏼😬⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One last thing: ✨ 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛 ✨ dental school is way better when you have a best friend to experience it with. You’re going to go through a lot of ups... and 𝑎 𝑙𝑜𝑡 of downs. It’s more bearable when you have a person you can lean on 👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏾 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🙌🏼Good Luck and keep grinding. Friday White Coat Highlights Presents! ⁣ ⁣ Name: Taylor Walker-Smith @taylorgangsmith ⁣ ⁣ Hometown/Nationality: Danville, Kentucky⁣ ⁣ Current City/town: Louisville, Kentucky⁣ ⁣ Undergrad: Centre College⁣ ⁣ Professional School: University of Louisville School of Dentistry⁣ ⁣ Degrees: BS in Chemistry⁣ ⁣ Professional Aspirations: I want to work in a racially diverse area and be as involved in the community as I can. Growing up, I didn’t see any healthcare professionals that looked like me, and that affected me more than I ever knew. All of physicians/surgeons, dentists, chiropractors, physical therapists, nurses, etc were white (and usually men). That’s where so much of my self-doubt was rooted. For so long, I thought these positions were made for them, not me. Representation matters!!! I want to be that representation (and mentor) for other young women of color aspiring to be a healthcare professional!⁣ ⁣ A challenge you faced on your journey: Financial stability has always been a challenge for me and my family. Getting through undergrad was tough because on top of getting the grades, playing sports, and running organizations, I had to find the time to do work-study, work my side job, help my mom with bills, insurance, etc. I missed out on a lot either because I couldn’t afford to participate or I needed to helping my family. It was a challenge for sure, but I wouldn’t change anything. When family needs you, you gotta be there!⁣ ⁣ Fact people don’t know about you: When I was a kid, I wanted to buy a section of the ocean so I could have a pet sea turtle... obviously that didn’t work out hahahah but turtles/tortoises are still my favorite animals/dream pets!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Advice for younger self: I would tell my younger self to be confident in herself! I was always so worried about not being good enough, and I still don’t even know what or who I was comparing myself to. I wish I thought about dental school interviews/applications as a way to show a school what I can offer rather than being so anxious about being good enough.
