The A̶r̶t̶i̶s̶t̶̶s̶ Human Way Amidst today’s painful challenges, Home Cooking invites 50 people across the globe to participate in a 12-week virtual experiment in artistic practice and social transformation: to work their way through Julia Cameron’s popular self-help book The Artist’s Way in dialogue with others they dont know. Organized by Kalaija Mallery and Prem Krishnamurthy, The A̶r̶t̶i̶s̶t̶̶s̶ Human Way tests out the social value of art and creative practice in times of communal crisis. This participatory experiment redesigns artistic tools for individual self-discovery in order to help realize collective joy. The deadline to apply is Sept 30. I am excited to announce my solo exhibition at @flintinstituteofarts called “Black Matters” starting today July 6th - October 11, 2020. When I created this work in 2009, I didn’t think that it would be even more relevant now as it is or act as a continuing series in some ways. . I am honored to have had my 13 pieces collected by them and to be one of the first exhibitions shown during their reopening. Given the recent trauma and events that sparked a resurgence in justice and police reform , I felt compelled to add 3 new pieces from victims of police brutality. It’s nearly impossible to do pieces on all of the victims...hopefully sooner than later this series can end. . The floods and muslide in Chesegon, West Pokot County in Kenya have had devastating effects. The community has lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The mudslide has left the community without water, and in unsanitary conditions heightening the communitys vulnerability to COVID-19.We, therefore, gave water cans and handwashing stations. Alongside the cans, we also gave water treatment chemicals to protect from water borne diseases. Women and adolescent girls have special needs that are often hard to meet during a crisis. Personal : This week has exposed emotions and feelings I wasn’t aware were buried. They came to the surface when I began crying unexpectedly as I passed my church. I really miss in-person gathering with my church. I miss hugging people without asking awkwardly first. I am angry. I’m disappointed in people’s behavior. I’m disappointed in my behavior sometimes. I’m sad. I want to walk into a store without a mask. I want my kids to enjoy going to school with their friends and playing sports. I want my work to be back to normal. So many things are out of balance in our society and it weighs on me. Reality is, I have little control over most of the things causing these feelings, but I could handle them better internally. I needed to get away. We went home. I hugged my family. We ate dinner. Talked and played with the kids. I woke up and went for a run. I made it to the cattle guard I always go to. It was slow and I had a limp (darn rose thorn in my foot), but I made it. Kind of how I go through my days lately...slower and with a limp, but every day I try do the best I can. I was able to let a lot of the stress go and reset my mind in 35 min. One of the songs that played while I ran, summed up how I feel and gave me direction on what I need to do. When the need for power overrides what’s best for the children, what do you do? Minimizing the toxicity with a co-parent who thrives on control can be challenging to say the least. The co-parent who’s seeking control in the co-parenting relationship is most likely unable to see outside of their behaviors. Their choice of words and actions are deeply rooted in their fears which is the reason they aren’t willing to admit nor have introspective. Unfortunately, if you are on the other end of their control tactics this can make your life stressful and emotionally draining. How do you deal with a controlling co-parent? 1. Respond don’t react - they thrive off an emotional reaction 2. Stay outside of the game - respond with only factual data about the children 3. Establish a self-care plan for when it becomes too much - recognize this about them and not you 4. Listen and ask more questions versus making statements - the more you understand their motive the better position you’ll be in to negotiate a plan 5. “Since 1967 I have been making walking lines and sculpture lines in different places and landscapes around the world. Life-lines. In the landscape they are marks of passage along a walk. In the urban world they are echoes of all my other lines. They are all made of different, natural materials.” Richard Long, Bristol, 2020 #RichardLong’s Athens Slate Line (1984), currently #OnView at the Shrine of Dionysos Elefthereus, consists of 280 individual pieces of slate assembled to form a line. Its linear shape acts as a path, reminiscent of the meditative nature of #walking. The act of walking combines physical endurance with the principles of order, action and idea, proposing a new way of viewing the wider area of the site. A line has been at the core of Long’s practice and in Athens Slate Line. It first appeared in his seminal work A Line Made by Walking (1967), as a student at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London. He created this artwork by continually treading the same path in a grass field in Wiltshire. I’d be 100% lying if I said this situation weren’t triggering my anxiety, and I’m sure a lot of you can say the same. I’m thankful for the chance to slow down and catch up but it comes at such a potentially high cost that I’m having trouble truly enjoying to the extent that I probably would under better circumstances. Or if Dakota weren’t states away. - Here’s some things I’ve been doing that have helped me ease my anxieties while still practicing social distancing: ✔️ 15 minutes of yoga using @downdogapp (free until April 1 for everyone, til July 1 for students and teachers) ✔️ FaceTiming friends and family every day and writing them letters ✔️journaling/writing about my experiences ✔️chalk lettering (see above!) ✔️ home workouts/weights ✔️riding my bike (sometimes with a friend!) ✔️bullet journaling and making lists ✔️ reading books ✔️designing and doodling, both for work and fun - here’s what HASN’T helped: ❌ being glued to my phone, constantly reading articles about the situation ❌ worrying about things that are completely out of my control ❌ feeling guilty for not moving my body enough ❌staying up late & having an irregular sleep schedule - So here’s to more of the former and less of the latter. Dont get me wrong, Im incredibly grateful for a lot of things. We have a house with enough space for all of us to have our own space. We have a garden to play and swim in. We have beautiful trails outside our front door to walk on and the ocean to dip our feet in. Weve had the time to enjoy the advantages of a slower pace to life. We have a government who is looking out for us and keeping us safe. And most importantly, we have each other and we have our health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But its been seven months of staying positive. Of being strong. Of doing the right thing. Of worrying about things that are out of our control. Of not having face to face to contact with our family and friends. Of not being allowed to do the things we love. Of riding a daily emotional rollercoaster. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is a lightness now with spring in the air and numbers on the decline, but our energy is still heavy. On this particular morning we spotted these 13 Wild Dog puppies who were left alone. We passed 2 hyenas going towards the puppies about 300 metres earlier. Parents arrived in the nick of time and chased approaching hyenas who were now very close. There was relief all round. There is not one diet, not one exercise, not one time to eat and not one magic pill that will suit everyone. We all know our bodies better than anyone else. We know when things feel good and when things don’t. Making lifestyle changes is hard!! What makes it harder is trying to fit into one box and trust me, I’ve been a victim of this myself. If something isn’t working, then that is absolutely fine! Try another. If spin class is leaving you exhausted, try something more restorative like yoga (this change worked wonders for me!). If intermittent fasting is leaving you tired then try a different pattern of eating. If you can happily drink coffee late into the day and get a good night’s sleep then drink away! DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU Have you struggled with a lifestyle change then swapped it for something that suits you better? He is a horrible cook because he doesn’t wanna put in the effort to learn. Kenma is not a very cuddly type of person. He doesn’t particularly like hugs in most circumstances though can if it’s from the right person. However when in crowded environments he has a tendency to stay extremely close to whoever he’s with. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝐗. I saw a fanart of him stretching and uhm I say he’s flexible now. He very bendy but once again doesn’t like putting effort to stretch often so when he does it’s a lot of cracking noises. Because he rarely shows this off barely anyone is aware of it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝐗. This ones pretty canon considering he’s always sneezing and used to get sick after games but, he gets sick really easily. And when he does it’s pretty bad, usually a fever and he’s stuck in bed for a day or two. He’s said before he’s not good with any types of animals however he especially is not a fan of dogs. They’re far too loud and excitable for him. [Date unknown] - In 1865 after emancipation, Governor Pease sold land in the Clarksville area to some of his former slaves some of whom continued to work for him as freed men. Then in 1871, Charles Clark, a former slave, purchased two acres of land from Nathan Shelley, a Confederate general. He built his home on the north side of what is now the 1600 block of West 10th Street. He sold the rest of his acreage to other freedmen. This area formed the nucleus of what would become the community of Clarksville, which according to tradition, Clark envisioned as a place where former slaves could reunite with their families and friends, direct their own lives and freely practice their religion. Hey everyone! I am back from a leave due to a rough brief chapter of my own life story, which I’ve overcome and produced a survival tip for anyone out there who needs it = BALANCE IS KEY. This month I lost hair and weight and my health conditions were exacerbated... all due to stress from taking an extremely hard and condensed course required to become a doctor. All I did was study, and I continuously felt behind. The stress of this class far-exceeded the carrying capacity my mind and body could take. However, what I lost that means the most to me was my own cousin’s baby shower I’ll never get to relive. My sister’s 28th birthday. Father’s Day to the best dad of all time. Falling off the face of the Earth from all friends and family and living in quarantine with just this class for one month caused me to lose my spirit and passion, which I’ve had to work very hard on harnessing back. That’s why I couldn’t just post on Compassionate Humanitarian. When I post, it comes from my heart and soul. But during this time my soul’s heart had melted, and I felt so debilitated. BALANCE IS KEY. No matter how hard it is in our day, we have to somehow balance what I call the 7 S’s: spirituality, self, service, social, sustainability, spirit, and study. We can get so caught up in particular aspects of life we forget to take a step back and see the bigger picture.... where will we be when it’s all said and done? Have we done enough to help give love to society as a whole? Have we given ourselves enough to our families and loved ones? Love is what makes the world go around. My take-aways: balance nourishes your soul and spirit, love conquers all, it’s going to be OKAY, never seek to be perfect if it will take a toll on your health and overall well-being, LOVE yourself and become your OWN best friend (because you’re the one person you can never escape from!) ❤️, Compassionate Humanitarian [P.S. Recovery is HARD! Nobody is disputing that. But when you don’t know where to start it’s overwhelming My first attempt at recovery was without my treatment that I am now so beyond blessed to have now. I don’t want anyone to avoid recovery because they do not have access to treatment. I understand I am not a medical professional so can only offer basic guidance from my own experiences but it is the information I desperately searched for and couldn’t find. Instead I got sucked into full day of eating videos. Spoiler: that didn’t help me start recovery. These steps are basic and should not be used as the “go to” over your own hunger and fullness cues. But at the beginning they can be deceiving so a little bit of structure is needed. I hope these tips will help any of you who are wondering where to start.
