part 1 of long post --- Thirty one years ago this very night, I was plopped atop the podium of a street lamp post on a major road outside of my home just 5 minute walk from Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The student protests have been on-going and escalating next door to us leading up to that night, and my mom and I were waiting for a bus to take us to my grandmothers house. No bus ever came. What did come was a scene that will forever be etched in my memory, even though I couldnt comprehend it at the time. It first started with a distant, unrecognizable noise that broke the silence in the empty road. The noise quickly came closer and became what sounded like a chorus of battle roar, then a young man riding a bike carrying behind him a young girl waving a big flag came into my view. They were riding at top speed in the direction of the Square, closely followed by a sprinting mob of what looked like hundreds of young men and women. Even at the age of 6, I could feel their adrenaline and their pride. Shortly after they disappeared from my view, another mob of people quickly followed behind. This time, they were in green uniform with metal helmets. Spurts of loud crackling sounds can be heard clearly, some accompanied by sounds of glass shattering. It took a minute for everyone on the sidewalk to realize that these were sounds of guns firing into the sky, or at nearby buildings. More often than not folks that don’t directly know me assume that I have some high-speedo Ninja type SOF background based on what I have done since retiring from the Marine Corps. While I find this humbling, I’d like to clarify that I have never been in Delta Force nor a book writing/movie producing SEAL unit(not gay). I’m not some high-speedo Marine sniper or pipe-hitter with MARSOC. I was never in the Air Force and am not a PJ/CCT sky-god. Never did any time as a member of the Marine Corps reconnaissance community (BN or Force). I have been fortunate to have been exposed to great people over the years both in the military and out. People that I have learned a tremendous amount from. Our clever boy Hunter locating Jess & Amelia after they took off whilst playing on the morning walk. The carers never have to worry again about the girls running off. Allthough this is a smaller area with no large predators, the babies are too young to be left unattended. In the past with rhinos like Kaytie & Lacy it sometimes took up to 2 or 3 hours to find them if they got spooked or just run off playing. Little grey rhinos blend into the surrounding bish really well. But Hunter finds them in under 15 minutes everytime.
