One afternoon you handed me your book In it was your signature, a bible verse, and a short note You asked this question, “do you want to write a book?” I hesitantly answered “yes, but I’m scared” As always, your encouragement never failed. You asked about my life, my dad and my relationship with Jesus You carefully listened and afterwards uttered these words – “Venus, you have a very tender heart, yet a very strong spirit.” I don’t know how you saw that, but you basically painted who I really am in the best way you can. “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you” I sent this as my prayer for you weeks ago. Today I say the same prayer too, as I sobbed, I begged that God would do a miracle for you. Honestly, I felt like a child untimely born, that after my birth my father had to go. I might not experience personal guidance from you, but surely our Father knows what to do. If God calls you home soon, Although it will pain and cause me to mourn, I submit to His will, His plans must prevail. The beauty is, you will soon see Jesus The God that you have been serving, proclaiming, and defending. Dr. Ravi, I treasure those short moments that I had with you. “BUT YOU AND YOUR BROTHER DON’T LOOK ANYTHING ALIKE” 🤔 I know! This isn’t something I usually post on my feed. I tried writing this caption several times, deleted it, re-wrote it. I was going to post it during Raksha Bandhan, but couldn’t quite put my thoughts into words. I may have struggled w/ the right words, because I kept thinking this isn’t my story, it’s his…. but this in fact is OUR STORY. Something that applies to the entire family. With that shift in mindset I was able to sit down & write this. SO HERE I AM POSTING THIS A DAY BEFORE MY BROTHER’S BIRTHDAY! 🎉 The number 1 reason why people say we don’t look alike? OUR SKIN COLOR!! ▪️Things people have said to my mom: “Oh! may be you did not drink enough milk during your pregnancy, so he turned out dark” “He was born close to midnight that’s probably why he’s dark; your daughter was born in the morning hence she is light skinned” “Aren’t you glad that your daughter did not turn out dark? You know since she’s a girl” ▪️A few remarks my brother would hear: “Don’t go play outside in the sun, you are already so dark. How will you find a nice girl to marry you in the future.” “Make sure you scrub your skin a little more in the shower” “Have you tried using fair & lovely skin lightening cream?” “Drink more milk, it’ll help lighten your skin” I’ll spare you all from more remarks that were made. For a mom, who loves her kid no matter what, to hear such things about her son is disheartening. For a young boy growing up listening to such comments is discouraging. THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN DOES NOT DEFINE YOU - GUY OR GIRL! I can proudly say this - HE IS A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER, A RESPONSIBLE FATHER, A LOVING HUSBAND, A CARING SON… MORE IMPORTANTLY AN AMAZING OLDER BROTHER & SOMEONE I HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO. Thanks to him I enjoy playing & watching sports ha! Even though I am 5 yrs younger to him he always let me speak my mind & treated me as an equal. It’s not every day that one of your amazing talented friends becomes an AUTHOR!!! 😱 • When I first met @mzjet at auditions, I just remember thinking that she had a smile that lit up the room. I realized quickly that her outer beauty was nothing in comparison to her inner beauty. Going through our rookie season together and becoming locker buddies with her was one of the greatest blessing I could have asked for! “I have been playing volleyball with Vic since first year and it has been one of the best experiences I have had at UofT! I was able to captain a great team and make new friends every year. As a commuter it was a great way to end a stressful day with a game at AC. Many of my teammates and I have been returning to Intramurals every year because of how great it is to be able to play together and have fun! Whats the right order for skincare products? 🧴 There’s no official ‘right’ order but there are some general rules you can follow. 👇🏼 🌞 AM 1️⃣ A gentle cleanser is first. My current favorite is the Gentle Milk Cleanser by @aveneusa. 2️⃣ Then, once you gently pat dry, an antioxidant serum goes directly onto cleansed skin. My daily antioxidant is Alto Defense Serum by @skinbetter (link in bio to purchase!). 3️⃣ Any other topicals come next- and sunscreen (SPF 30 or more!) is the last part of your skincare routine. Currently on my shelf? Eryfotona Actinica by @isdinusa. 4️⃣ Makeup follows if you so choose! 🌙PM 1️⃣ A gentle cleanser, or a medicated on if you have acne-prone skin! Sometimes I use an AHA-containing cleanser like Glycolic Acid Wash by @skinceuticals. 2️⃣ I like to use a hyaluronic acid serum such as Mineral 89 by @vichyusa followed by 3️⃣ A retinoid of choice (try AlphaRet by @skinbetter, see link in bio to purchase!). 4️⃣ Finally, I finish with a moisturizer. So today, I’m finally ready to share my journey 💁🏻♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since I was a child, I’ve always struggled with my weight. It was a culmination of a disorder called insulin resistance with borderline PCOS, unhealthy eating habits (side effects of being a foodie) and a sedentary lifestyle which led to me reaching my highest at a 100 kgs! With a reality check and the guidance of my mother @sumanagarwal I worked hard to cross this hurdle, reaching my lowest weight at 65 kgs (3 kgs away from my ideal weight) Trust me it was the best feeling EVER, seeing myself so fit and healthy made me happier than I could have ever imagined! However, just as I was about to reach my target, I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis (inflamed tissue in the sole of the foot) and my workouts took a backseat. This was primarily my own doing; driven by the weight loss momentum and obsessive need to reach my target, I started to exercise excessively (against my mothers advise). In the middle of all this - I got married! Which was absolutely beautiful and dreamlike followed by an incredible (and very long) vacay! But getting back to the point, this hugeeee break put me off track and I completely let loose. End result - 🥁 🥁 🥁 - put on a chunk of that weight again! 😩 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Gaining weight you’ve worked so very hard to lose can be extremely demotivating, but then I realised how important it is for us to put ourselves and our health first. So this time I’ve decided to adopt a more sensible approach, balancing healthy eating and active living! This involves me making tiny changes in my everyday life, which not only help me reach my target weight but also concentrate on my overall well-being. Because what is life without happiness? 💭 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Going to share these tips to keep me motivated and hopefully help you too! 🙏 At the end of the day, we need to be our own cheerleaders! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This journey has been a great reminder of how thankful I am for everyone and everything I have in my life. I was Michelle Obama on my mom’s birthday last year for her book tour! It was definitely the most meaningful experience I’ve ever been honored to do, and no one knew that was the second to last day my Grandaddy had on earth 😭. I went from the hospital, to the Ryman Auditorium, to the Symphony Center for a casting, back to the Ryman, and back to the hospital. Crazy emotional day! If you know me, you know my grandparents were our BEST FRIENDS, our EVERYTHING.To cheer my mama up I snuck her in the #Becoming Michelle Obama Tour as a birthday present and Mother’s Day present! 😎Everyone called me “Mrs. Obama”, and I was totally fine with it! I hope to make a difference in the world like Michelle Obama. I will never allow anyone to tell me what I CAN’T do. This week we lost a beautiful life to postpartum depression. The fact is that suicide accounts for 1 in 5 postpartum deaths, and data shows that it the 2nd most common cause of death in the postpartum period. *Trigger Warning* Nima Bhakta tragically died by suicide and before she died, she wrote about how the South Asian community in particular does not understand postpartum depression. She was worried about how much she had changed since having her son Keshav. She didn’t feel like she had anyone to talk to about her struggles. The postpartum period is one of the highest risk times for women, even if youve never had any history of depression or anxiety. And, research shows that one of the biggest barriers to getting help is stigma. Women are terrified about sharing how dark they feel. The South Asian community in particular has a bad track record here. But what is so important to know that help exists. There are specialists who are trained to specifically work with pregnant and postpartum women. Psychotherapy and medications work. Postpartum support international @postpartumsupportinternational has an incredible warmline that can help connect you with local resources including perinatal psychiatrists like myself and perinatal psychotherapists - 1-800-944-4773. 2015-2020 As I begin my wedding shopping I think about what suits my body type now. What bothers is when I raise that concern people are so quick to negate that. As if they’ve grown with my body. “Tiny little thing” or “ugh please” is usually what follows along. Then of course you look like a child lol. Do I respond with you look so old!?! That’s a different rant for a different day. When I was tiny i ate too less and now that I’ve gained weight I am not allowed to speak about it?? It’s frustrating that I have to justify how my body feels to me to be heard. I can be tiny and that’s okay. I can have curves and that’s okay. Where I am with me - I promise you I know best. Some people want to gain weight and work hard towards such goals. Respect that. More than anything accept that every body type is different. To you I maybe “tiny” but to myself I have worked hard to become healthy. I gained muscle. I got curves. FOR MYSELF. Not for you. So for once, do us a favor and shut up. Listen. Stop labeling us. Boundaries are a necessary component of any healthy relationship. Personally, I have difficulty setting boundaries. In fact, I don’t like to say no partly because I want to be perceived as agreeable, and partly because I fear judgment. There. I said it! Truth be told, on some level, we all want to be accepted. Recently, however; I’ve been setting boundaries more and more, and I’m happier for it. How did I introduce such change? Here are some pointers I have found helpful: 🙅🏽♀️ First, identify your own limits. How? Recognize when you start to feel uncomfortable or distressed- THAT is your boundary 🙅🏽♀️ Make it directly known where your boundary is 🙅🏽♀️ Give yourself permission to associate guilt or self-doubt with setting boundaries with loved ones. And then Let It Go 🙅🏽♀️ Allow yourself space to change a situation that is out of control 🙅🏽♀️ Make self-care a priority 🙅🏽♀️ Assert yourself and be firm 💫 You do not need to set yourself on fire to keep others warm 🙆🏽♀️ I’m not perfect but I’m definitely making an effort to set boundaries and practice self care 💙 I am always looking to do better.
