I’m almost 21 and this hits home for me. Countless times I’ve experienced little sly comments from others being amazed that I didn’t get my license the day I turned 17. People insinuated that I was lazy or just too dependent on my parents. But people don’t see the whole story. For me- in my neighborhood- it was like an immediate thing- once you turned 17 you would get your license and a car. So many of my peers got their license, which often times made me feel like an outlier. Looking back on it now- I still deal with a lot of shame and insecurity around the fact that I don’t have my license- but one day I’ll hopefully have it. People don’t see that not everyone has the resources to take lessons, some may not be able to afford a car, others may have health issues that affect their driving, or have driving anxiety and more. Also- some may have parents who refuse to take them driving or don’t have anyone to teach them (and some people can’t afford to go pay a driving school) People don’t see below the surface level- if you are over the age of 18 and don’t have a license- you are not a failure or a disgrace. Be gentle with yourself. For me personally, I have a lot of driving anxiety that prevented me from driving and when I was 15, I wasn’t even in school to take drivers ed- which delayed the entire process of me getting my license. while psychiatric hospitals can be helpful to some people, they can also be immensely harmful and traumatic to others. Everyone has a different experience and story to tell when I was 18 years old, I was deeply suicidal from my OCD and was taken to the ER. In order to avoid going IP, I pleaded that I was fine and nothing was wrong. It was just a lack of sleep that impaired my judgment. Luckily I convinced the doctors well enough and didn’t have to go in inpatient. I went inpatient when I was 15 years old and that was just not a fun experience. I was held there for days against my own will and my parents were told that if I left it would be ‘going against medical advice’ . From there- I was pumped with heavy doses of antipsychotics- against my consent. Told ‘oh this will help you’ . I was put on such heavy medication at the sole age of 15. And then oh my god the discharge process was something else. My parents wanted to get me out of there as it was unsafe and I just sat there every day staring at the walls. There was no therapeutic value. There was nothing of substance- and the therapies were subpar. I didn’t even talk to the psychiatrist- instead I was pumped with medication. I have heard such terrible stories from others. Stories that included violence, stories that included lawsuits, stories that included being admitted indefinitely with no discharge date. There’s so many horrific stories about psychiatric hospitals out there. Also- I’m not trying to discourage anyone from going- this is just my own personal view point and how I personally feel. Honestly when you go to a place to seek help at your lowest, you shouldn’t be leaving feeling traumatized or more suicidal. This just isn’t treatment. Psychiatric facilities can also be so damn abusive. Something else that personally bothers me is forced hospitalization. What ever happened to personal autonomy? Forced hospitalizations can cause even more trauma to someone. Mental health hospitals need a drastic change and overhaul to the way that it is ran. There needs to be other methods of treatment besides mental health hospitals. Like mental health urgent care facilities, peer respite centers, etc - @mentalhealthfacts on Instagram

Politics has left me feeling sad & bereft recently, so Ive been thinking more about direct community building. Within music one of the things we struggle most with is access to information. Ive been compiling as much clear information as possible to explain some of the realities of releasing, touring, signing deals & working with your professional team. Im going to refine it for a while so its not completely overwhelming, and at this point would like to find some willing participants to workshop this with. Leave a comment here and indicate what level of technical detail youre looking to explore. Optimistic would be people at the beginning of their career, on the verge of signing a deal or publishing Confused would be anyone whos already in the system but is looking to understand better the new world of release options Commiseration is a final group for folks who have been doing this too long and need advice about tools for consolidating their work, catalogue & income streams. Its ok to think about a way out!! Thats optimistic confused or commiseration 🗳️ This is just a beta test before doing this more widely. Will probably be on Zoom for now Just a caveat, this is not advice about how to reach an audience or build one, something I think were all uncertain about.
