We grow up with so much pressure in the gay community... the pressure we put on ourselves, the pressure we put on each other in our community and the pressure society puts on us to live up to this false expectation created by the media of what a gay person should look like. We believe that our value is directly related to what we look like. I’ve struggled with body image issues and it was exacerbated being gay AND working in the fitness industry. This changed for me when I let go of the unhealthy expectations I put on myself. I began training my mind and healing my heart (the inner work) similar to how I physically train - commitment and consistency to the process and an incredible inner drive to push beyond the point of what was comfortable. Self worth is not synonymous with 6-pack abs or low body fat %. Most existing systems we interact with are classist, elitist, ageist, colourist, fatphobic. Most are built on the foundations of shame, lies, exclusivity, insecurity, greed. Most tell you to spend and buy and possess more, better, cooler, faster, newer to feel better. Consumerism and most millionaire and billionaire fast fashion companies rely disproportionately on the exploitation of developing countries and people of colour. 80% are women of colour. The world’s secondhand and rejected clothes are usually dumped in landfills of developing countries. Measuring somebody’s worth and talent by how they look and what they wear is problematic. We need to make changes in our own thinking, in knowing what we are perpetuating, where it stems from, whom it affects and also demand systemic change. It is important to note how all of these are connected, how your insecurity is utilised for selling to you something you already did not need, how the increase in demand leads to more unethical conditions in factories, how magazines and advertising promoting certain products, ideals, beauty standards lead to validation and further demand for them, making anybody without them feel lesser than. . Alot of times, I really just want to fucking scream my lungs out. Scream my fucking heart out so loud, that once Im done screaming, all the agony and misery I felt, has drained. In these moments it becomes completely non existent. Like it was never there. Sounds stupid as I write this, losing my voice, as if thats actually what happens, but theres no other outlet for me at the moment so here it is. __ Here is my agony, finding its way through those rotting parts of my brain, crawling to the surface, just to pour out in the form of words. Here is my misery, finding its way through those deep dark parts of my subconscious, creeping to the surface, just to pour out in the form of words. Here is my anguish, finding its way through those unexplored uncontrollable blocks of my mind, climbing up to the surface, just to pour out in the form of words. __ How is it, that we only notice the value of something when its all too late? I guess its part of human nature, the ignorance. The ignorance to ourselves, our thoughts, our emotions, our own fucking heads, as well as our ignorance to others. But one would think that after being aware of such a conundrum, we would find our way around it. Maybe even evolve past it. But doesnt seem like we ever fucking will at this rate. __ Whenever I feel like screaming but cant, it feels as if Im choking on pieces of broken glass. And these pieces of broken glass are making their way down my throat, cutting it up from the inside through and through. Perhaps thats what makes me lose my voice, all those cuts. Since finishing my dissertation, Ive found myself writing creatively again (not that dissertation writing isnt creative 🤷♀️) and wow has it felt amazing. I wanted to figure out how to best share this longer form writing with you all and have started a newsletter of sorts, that Im calling Soft Reflections. I say of sorts because really what it is is a piece of personal writing, which I hope will help my fellow trauma bbs feel seen, and show you that healing is very, very much possible.⠀ ⠀ In Soft Reflections #1: The Broken Light Switch; or, a Lifetime of Disordered Sleep, I reflect on the ebbs and flows of my relationship with sleep, its connections to my nervous system, and learning to care for my flight response.⠀ ⠀ You can sign up to receive 1-2 new pieces of writing per month via my website (see my stories for the swipe up option). Early Life Indian nationalist leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, more commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Kathiawar, India, which was then part of the British Empire. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, served as a chief minister in Porbandar and other states in western India. His mother, Putlibai, was a deeply religious woman who fasted regularly. Gandhi grew up worshiping the Hindu god Vishnu and following Jainism, a morally rigorous ancient Indian religion that espoused non-violence, fasting, meditation and vegetarianism. Young Gandhi was a shy, unremarkable student who was so timid that he slept with the lights on even as a teenager. At the age of 13, he wed Kasturba Makanji, a merchant’s daughter, in an arranged marriage. In the ensuing years, the teenager rebelled by smoking, eating meat and stealing change from household servants. In 1885, Gandhi endured the passing of his father and shortly after that the death of his young baby. Although Gandhi was interested in becoming a doctor, his father had hoped he would also become a government minister, so his family steered him to enter the legal profession. Shortly after the birth of the first of four surviving sons, 18-year-old Gandhi sailed for London, England, in 1888 to study law. The young Indian struggled with the transition to Western culture, and during his three-year stay in London, he became more committed to a meatless diet, joining the executive committee of the London Vegetarian Society, and started to read a variety of sacred texts to learn more about world religions. Upon returning to India in 1891, Gandhi learned that his mother had died just weeks earlier. Then, he struggled to gain his footing as a lawyer. In his first courtroom case, a nervous Gandhi blanked when the time came to cross-examine a witness. He immediately fled the courtroom after reimbursing his client for his legal fees. Growing isnt easy, its painful🥀 -Deeptalk. 🎬 Pain- physically and mentally are signs of your body or your mind, it means you have to pay attention. ⚠️ Think about your Lifestyle and think about your Problems. Reflect yourself LEARN & change. 💡 When you wanna heal you have to fight the cause. 💯 And it does not matter if physically or mentally. ☝🏽 In both cases you have to feel the pain. When you feel sick and only take medicine to supress symptons, you will never heal. Cause you only reduce pain & pain is an emotion, and your emotions are important. You have to reflect your lifestyle. What do you consume? Do you eat healthy? Do you live concsious? ... When you experienced mental pain and supress the symptom while doing like it never happened then you are going to feel that again and again everytime you think about it or you will experience other similar situations that will remind you of it. If you read the story of the day yesterday, you already know Fia made a huge batch of bourbon apple butter a couple of days ago. (This one is ‘a very short story’ & like almost everything we do, it’s available in any gender you prefer. At Flying Edna.) . Id already imagined a morning filled with the perfume of warm buttered toast & great swaths of apple butter. There was happiness burbling in the air... . So, as soon as I rolled out of bed, I jumped in the car & zoomed off to @WildCrumb, our favorite bakery. . It was closed. For cleaning. (Who in their right mind cleans before you have toast? Exactly. No one I know.) . It was not a happy time. . Except on the way home, the clouds sprawled in lazy arcs across the sky, settling themselves comfortably for what the day would bring. The mountains were perfectly mountainish & the hayfields below them glowed golden in the morning light. I walked in the door to the smell of fresh coffee & Fia dancing around the kitchen. There was much laughter & maybe some talking in bad Irish accents about the sad, sad state o the world without a wee bit o toast. . All in all, a perfectly wonderful start to the day... .
