The second release from OOYH Untamed, Anna Webber - Rectangles is out TODAY! Webber started the band with the sole directive of playing set-length versions of her composition Rectangles 3. The band Rectangles features Webber with Marc Hannaford, Adam Hopkins, and Mark Ferber, and this particular version of the piece was recorded live in Queens in December 2019. The band didn’t go into this gig trying to make a record, and the intention was never to release this - because of that, you get a recording that is slightly rough around the edges, but also we think very accurately captures the energy and spontaneity of this group at its best. I found an old journal yesterday and of course instead of continuing to look for the thing I was actually looking for, I read the whole thing from cover to cover. I had been having very stressful dreams, and the refrain “forgive yourself and get to work” was written over and over again covering a full page. I must have internalized that trope where teachers punish students by making them write the same thing 100 times on the chalkboard, like in the opening credits for the Simpsons. Maybe I thought that’s what I needed to do to get the message to sink in. • I’ve been “muted” for nearly two months on Instagram. To be honest, I didn’t miss it: the pressure of sharing, of striking the balance between witty and heartfelt, trying to sell shit without being annoying. It was a good break but one that it’s hard to come back from. How do I talk about what’s been happening in the world and in my life? Should I do a fundraiser? Do I offer services for free? How do I help? How can I learn? How do I know the right thing to do? How do I use this platform in a way that feels authentic and useful and not just performative and virtue-signal-y. I still don’t have any answers, except this one: forgive yourself and get to work. • Forgive yourself doesn’t mean let yourself off the hook. It doesn’t mean that what you did was okay. It means that you’re a human being and that you will do better next time. It means that staying trapped in a cycle of self-loathing doesn’t help anyone or anything. It means that you might be able to forgive others as well and maybe not be so terrified to make a(nother) mistake. It means creating the space in your life for real action, real change, real growth, REAL WORK. • The work for me has been about revealing the blind spots that I have around race and inequality. Through reading, through conversation, through meditation. I’ve uncovered a lot, and I’m sure there’s a ton more. Part of the work has been waking up to the fact that this will be a lifetime of work.
