Gliophorus laetus (Heath Waxcap). If I had to pick a ‘Species of the Year’ for me for 2019 it would be this one. Why? I guess because I saw them a lot and yet they are somewhat uncommon (at least if online observations are any indication), and also beautiful, and so I spent a lot of time looking at and studying them. I’m reading a book right now by a 20th century mycologist, Alexander H. Smith, and he talks about fruiting patterns and the phenomenon all mushroom hunters start to become aware of after a while: when and why mushrooms fruit is rather mysterious. Sometimes you can go years without seeing a particular type of mushroom and then suddenly it’s everywhere. There are multiple reasons for this, but he talks about one in particular that I found really interesting: fungi live mostly out of sight, underground or in plant matter, logs and so forth, and during most of the year we don’t see them, but they are busy doing what they do – acquiring and storing energy (basically “eating”). Making fruiting bodies takes a lot of energy. So they have to be smart about (and when I say ‘smart about’, I really mean ‘evolutionarily adapted towards’) fruiting only when they have enough energy to produce viable fruitbodies that have maximum potential to spread spores. And in some cases this may take years. And in some *species* they may have for whatever reason evolved to store a LOT of energy and then produce a LOT of fruiting bodies all at once, rather than employing the “store a little, fruit a little” strategy.
