Micayla and I met in April for an emergency consultation for egg freezing, aka, fertility preservation before she was to start chemotherapy. She was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer and was given a poor prognosis. She is 23 years old. 😌 It was a tough conversation and she handled it like a champ. Our team came together to make it happen. Micayla was able to successfully freeze eggs. She did an amazing job with the injections, ultrasounds and egg retrieval and we knew we were witnessing the strength of a warrior. Micayla went on to cancer treatment. Our team prayed for good news and then lo and behold, she came to visit with these awesome T shirts with the news that we were hoping for: A month after treatment, her lung mass was half the size it was before. It gives us all hope that she will go on to become a mother on her own, knowing that her eggs are preserved if she needs them. 🥚 Facts: 20 million cancer survivors will live in the United States by 2026. 70,000 patients are diagnosed each year between the ages of 17- 39 years. 73% of female adolescent and young adults reported that they did not receive enough information about fertility. MU Reproductive Health and Fertility Center is part of the Oncofertility Consortium, a global network of over 200 IVF clinics that support oncofertility education, treatment and research. As a child I used to hate it but as an adult I LOVE the way my tongue feels. When I heard Shauna Kinville at the St. George protests compare herself to George Floyd...it set me ON FIRE. I don’t know that woman, but if I could talk to her this is what I would say: You are IN NO WAY like George Floyd...with your white privilege out there protesting saying you “can’t breathe” in a mask that someone is asking you to wear to SAVE your life and the lives of others. Yea, that’s the OPPOSITE of what happened to George Floyd. He had a knee on his neck for almost 9 minutes and was KILLED. YOU are trying to be SAVED. He cried out in desperation because he was DYING. You are crying out with courage and confidence because you think a RIGHT is being taken from you. A right to LIFE? Nope, not in any way shape or form, because this face mask does not deprive you of oxygen - of life. Ask any healthcare worker who has spent 12, 18, 24+ hours straight in a mask, in the hospital, trying to save people from a deadly virus. We can breathe - and so can you. As the Hathra fire still burns, The Uttar Pradesh government faces backlash over the second Dalit Rape Victim in Balrampur. The 22 year old woman reportedly went to secure College Admission but did not return in time and the family launched the search for her. The Woman was sent back home in a Rickshaw by the assailants around 7pm. According to the family members, the girl looked dazed and in a serious condition, after which she was rushed to the hospital by her kin. She died on her way to the hospital. The doctor at the local hospital said her condition is serious and advised that she be taken to Lucknow. But she died when we were near Balrampur town, the mother added. The police, however, said the autopsy does not reveal that her hands and legs were broken. In the said case, prompt action has been taken by the police with both the accused arrested. Details that hands and legs were broken are not true The post-mortem report does not mention this, Balrampur Police tweeted late last night. This is the second incident of gang-rape and death reported just a day after another Dalit victim of gang-rape and brutality from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras died on September 29, sparking angry protests in the country. After Hathras, another gang-rape incident has surfaced in Balrampur in which the woman died after torture. The BJP government should not attempt a cover up here like Hathras and should quickly take action against the accused, Former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav tweeted. Furthermore SP Vikrant Vir said that the report from Aligarh Hospital did not confirm rape in the Hasrath case after the woman was assaulted by 4 upper caste men and she succumbed to her injuries. Today is a very special day. I’m about to go into my first rehearsal for a LIVE performance since February. To say I’m emotional is an understatement. I’m so grateful to come back with such an important event, with Lidiya Yankovskaya and the Refugee Orchestra Project, for 4 concerts this weekend, entitled “Voices of Refuge.” The hour-long performance will feature refugee composers from today, including 25-year-old Afghan composer Milad Yousufi, and Iranian-American composer Gity Razaz, alongside historical refugee composers like Rachmaninoff, Korngold, and Irving Berlin. Do head to @refugeeorchestraproject to learn more. Before Covid, it’s safe to say I found comfort in my routine... rehearse, perform, relax, repeat. Now with more time of reflection, I realized how the routine led to a lot of ‘taking for granted,’ and even entitlement. Time away led me to persistent nagging questions: Do I still have something to say through making art? Is there a place for me in this fast changing business? How can I find more peace, more stability? I can’t say I have all the answers, but do know that to be asked to the table by the wonderful Refugee Orchestra Project is a privilege I refuse to take for granted. Did I ever tell you about the time I was a civilian volunteer driver for the First Lady’s motorcade? This is hour 14 or 15 of a very long day of many events including her being on Letterman and Michelle was very kind and graciously took photos with all the volunteers. And even entertained my awkward thanks for her office having returned my cousin’s Flat Stanley. As you can see in my hair, the experience of driving a 14 person van without training and filled with her staff (not her), told to ignore the secret serv swarming in weird defense strategy and just follow the SUV with an agent holding an automatic rifle out the back... well you know, I was feeling a bit grubby and sweaty after all that, but still she hugged me. I admire the work she has done in public service and as a private citizen and the grace with which she has done it. Thank you, Michelle. There hasn’t been a day in 2020 where we haven’t helped a woman who has needed our support. ⠀ Making the decision to close our doors in March was one of the hardest things we’ve had to do as a charity, but no one rallies like Smart Works does. ⠀ In just one day we launched our virtual service, offering interview coaching over the phone and sending out clothing care packages to women in need. ⠀ In the last six months we’ve sent out 400 parcels of work wear for women ahead of their interviews and provided 500 interview coaching sessions over the phone.
