Geordie è unantica ballata britannica nata intorno al XVI secolo, numero 209 delle Child Ballads, ed esiste in molte varianti. La vicenda sembra avere un fondamento storico: si tratta della storia di George Gordon, conte di Huntly, che fu condannato a morte come traditore nel 1589 per essersi ribellato contro Giacomo VI, re di Scozia. Per intercessione della famiglia fu liberato previa consegna di un riscatto. Ma come fu che arrivò alle orecchie di Fabrizio? Tramite Maureen Rix, nata in Inghilterra ma trasferitasi vicino a Genova nei primi anni ’60. Conobbe Fabrizio perché il padre, Giuseppe De André, le aveva offerto un lavoro come insegnante di inglese presso la scuola parastatale di Pareto di Sampierdarena. In un’intervista pubblicata dal Secolo XIX racconta della prima volta che l’ha sentito cantare: “Una sera lo invitai a cena a casa mia e di mio marito, lui aveva accettato l’invito premettendo: ‘Non canterò mai’. Dopo alcuni bicchieri di vino, si sciolse, prese una chitarra e cantò davanti agli ospiti “La guerra di Piero”, “Carlo Martello” e altre. Fu una serata speciale”. Se la loro amicizia nacque, quindi, nei modi più normali, la storia di “Geordie”, invece, fu decisamente più rocambolesca. Si tratta di un’antica ballata inglese contenuta su una cassetta che Maureen voleva regalare a Fabrizio al ritorno da un viaggio Inghilterra. Purtroppo il nastro si danneggiò e lei si limitò a cantargliela solo una volta, appena tornata a Genova. I due poi si persero di vista perché Maureen accettò un incarico a Rapallo, ma la canzone rimase impressa nella mente del cantautore che, un giorno, chiamò l’insegnante e la portò di fretta a Roma per registrarla. “Andiamo a Roma, devo registrare delle canzoni e devi esserci anche tu” - racconta Maureen - “L’ex moglie di Fabrizio, Puny, guidò tutta la notte da Genova a Roma.
