WATER IS LIFE 🌊 Repost @natgeoadventure • Photo by @donaldmiralle Rays of light stream through into a massive underground, underwater cave in a cenote in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Cenotes are massive sinkholes formed when the ceiling of a cave collapses underwater, creating a network of underwater caverns in crystal clear water that divers come from around the world to explore. In ancient times, cenotes served as the Mayan civilizations only source of water and were also held as being sacred to the Mayan People. They believed that the sinkholes represented a passage to the underworld, or Xibalba” in the Mayan language. Archaeologists have found fossils of mammoths, massive jaguars, and sloths in these underground cave systems, as well as human bones indicating ritual sacrifice and human presence in the cenotes as far back as 9,000 years ago. - @no.2.plastic on Instagram

Award winning, Australian national treasure, Rose Seidler House built by Harry Seidler for his parents- 1948-50. It was an immediate success, today a protected heritage site. Located in Wahroonga, a suburb of Sydney, it was Seidler’s first Australian design. Viennese Jewish by birth & later an Australian citizen (with a Canadian detour) 15-year-old Harry was sent by his parents to England after Anschluss. His studies in Cambridgeshire cut short when war broke out a year later. By now classed as an adult and an ‘enemy alien’ regardless that he was clearly not a threat. Interned on the Isle of Mann & then in Canada, later in life he published his diary about this difficult period of great uncertainty, a combination of words and images which is today housed in the State Library of NSW. There was ultimately a good outcome when he, along with fellow refugees had their status changed to Friendly Alien. He remained in Canada and studied architecture. His Bauhaus encounter came in ‘46 when he was awarded a Harvard scholarship, studying under Gropius and Breuer (who also employed him in New York). Contemporaries included IM Pei & Paul Rudolph. Travelling via Brazil, he briefly worked for Niemeyer. The home ‘Rose Seidler House’ helped put Modernism on the map in Australia. A founding member of the Australian Architecture Association, designer of Australia Square (with Pier Luigi Nervi) & many other buildings. Seidler was known to be unafraid to share his views on urban planning, his vision of a suburb differed from local councillors. A divider, in his obituary art critic Robert Hughes complained about the ‘Seidlerisation of Sydney’. His buildings, which we would describe as brutalist, were not all appreciated either however how can one not love his Australian Embassy in Paris (together with Breuer) a magnificent brutalist building? The recipient of stellar international awards, Seidler was considered a huge influence. Spot - Almonda Location - Alcanena The spring of the Almonda river (or Olho do Moinho da Fonte) is located on the southeastern ridge of the Serra de Aire, Torres Novas anticline resulting from, among others, contact between the Estremenho Calcário Massif and the less permeable soils of the basin of the Tagus. This karst spring is the exsurgence of the underground hydrological network of the most extensive national karstic system. The Almonda grotto has an approximate development of 10km, with an extensive network of underground, fossil or active galleries. Due to its complexity and size, its exploration and documentation is yet to be completed. Although the spring is permanent, it is only possible to dive on dry season. It is possible to go trough 1000mts of galleries and a drop of -78mts. In the rainy season, it is impossible to penetrate the system at the source due to the strong current and flow rate. Authorization from the Renova factory is required. Key Biscayne to get another artificial reef called the @imagination.reef.project to be created 3 ½ miles offshore. It’s location will be near Gary Levine’s earlier project called the Neptune Memorial Reef (formerly the Atlantis Reef Project) a decade ago. It’s being built for the marine biologists of the world. The site will be 10 acres underwater and will be used as a planting area for assisted evolution in the development of super corals. It’s an iconic message to protect the oceans and save our reefs. When I was starting out as a photographer I read as many books and spoke to ask many people as I could. The first things I learned were the rules. Rule of thirds. The Sunny 16 Rule (this deserves a post of its own!). Never shoot against the light. Watch the shadows. Rules are a great starting point but eventually we all learn how to bend them, and this is where we really start to learn photography. Each one of us will bend these rules in our own ways, and this is what we ultimately call a photographic style. So shadows are your friends. Backlight can be magical. Putting your subject in the center of the frame is not a bad thing. These are the kinds of discussions we like having at the GRID office, bending rules every so slightly every time we shoot a new story. This is the guiding idea behind the Open Call, to have open discussions with fellow photographers so that we can all see that the rules are meant to be broken. Remember, shadows are your friends.
