- I bought a book on Amazon about gay art; inside I found a note from one man to his lover. I can’t help but to wonder who they were and where they are now. “Greg, A book about your favorite subject. Happy Birthday. xoxo, Mark. June 2004”
Today is Constitution Day. Drafted in secret by delegates to the Constitutional Convention during the summer of 1787, this four-page document, signed on this day in 1787, established the government of the United States. The Federal Convention convened in the State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would draft an entirely new frame of government. All through the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated, and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among the chief points at issue were how much power to allow the central government, how many representatives in Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected — directly by the people or by the state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of cooperative statesmanship and the art of compromise. Test your knowledge of this founding document in our story today. How much do you know about the Constitution? ... Photo: The Constitution of the United States, page 1, 9/17/1787. #ThomasCole is best known as a Hudson River School landscape artist, but he had a wide variety of other interests. While doing the final review of a transcript for Coles journal (1843-1848), we came across this entry from May 14, 1837 with a diagram for a #steamboat with two paddle wheels. * * Cole wrote: Last Autumn a new principle for Steam Boats suggested itself to me - & this spring my Nephew Henry Bayless & I constructed a rude model after my plan & it succeeded as well as could be expected from the rudeness of its structure – and it is now my intention to have a more complete model made. We know that the great difficulty in propelling vessels is in their having to lift such a weight of water before them - and immense power has to be employed in order to propel them swiftly. Now it appears to me that the plan I propose does away with the obstruction of head-water & consequently less power will propel. * * The complete journal can be found in the #NYSLdigitalcollections (link in bio), although the transcript is not yet available; this entry begins on page 56. #nyslmsc #manuscript #diary #NYartist - @nyslibrary on Instagram

One of my favorite composers ever. His style and class really personifies in his music and pictures. Not many people know this but he was an avid jockster and prankster. My favorite recording of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is Mr. Rachmaninoff performing the piano part with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra.⠀ ⠀ #rachmaninoff #rachmaninoffpianoconcerto #sergeirachmaninoff #russian #russianboy #composer #musiccomposer #composers #composerlife #classicalcomposer #composerslife #piano #pianocover #pianomusic #pianoplayer #pianoforte #pianoman #pianosolo #pianist #pianists #pianistsofinstagram #classicalpianist #instapianist #musician #musicians #musicianlife #talentedmusicians #musicianslife #musiciansofinstagram #instamusician - @arshakandriasov on Instagram

OK, so I am having one of those what the F@#$ moments. Shannon from Mack Avenue Records emails me yesterday morning on release day to tell me that in the first few hours of release my new CD Thicker Than Water was #2 on iTunes jazz! That was awesome and blew me away. What I didnt really pay attention to and didnt see until today was who was #1 and #3 as I was just thrilled to be #2. When I actually payed attention i realized that #1 was John Coltrane and #3 was Miles Davis! Holy crap! Talk about one of those unbelievably humbling moments in your life to be right in the middle of two of the most important musicians in the history of jazz. I know that chart numbers go up and down like an elevator and that chart moment has come and gone, but for that instant I was just numb for a second as those two are legends and I am a bass player from the Old Pueblo. Man what an honor to be there, even if just for a bit. I am going to blow up that screen shot and frame it, are you kidding me! There is one legendary bass player from Southern Arizona, Charles Mingus was born in Nogales, 50 miles from Tucson……. - @brianbrombergbassplayer on Instagram
On this day in 1861, Sullivan Ballou, a Union Army officer, wrote a letter to his wife Sarah one week before he was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run. Prominently highlighted in Ken Burns’ Civil War docuseries, the letter conveys the complexities of Ballou’s emotions before battle. It is perhaps the greatest love letter of our time, equal parts expressions of devotion to one’s spouse and one’s duty to his country. . . “Sarah, my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me to you with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly on with all these chains to the battlefield.” - Sullivan Ballou to his wife Sarah, July 14, 1861 . . . . . #handmadeletters #calligraphy #handwritten #letterwriting #loveletter #weddinggift #designspiration #acreativedc #flourishforum #iampeth #famousletters #thepowerofwords #sullivanballou #civilwarletters - @handmadeletters on Instagram

Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) // was an American-Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. An Armenian Genocide survivor, Karsh migrated to Canada as a refugee. By the 1930s he established himself as a significant photographer in Ottawa, where he lived most of his adult life, though he traveled extensively for work. His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill was a breakthrough point in his 60-year career, through which he took numerous photos of known political leaders, men and women of arts and sciences. Over 20 photos by Karsh appeared on the cover of Life magazine, until he retired in 1992. His 1941 photo of Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, brought him prominence. The photo was taken on December 30, 1941 in the chamber of the Speaker of the House of Commons in the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa after Churchill delivered a speech on World War II to the Canadian members of the parliament. It was arranged by Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Churchill is particularly noted for his posture and facial expression, which have been compared to the wartime feelings that prevailed in the UK: persistence in the face of an all-conquering enemy. The photo session was short and, just before exposure, Karsh moved towards Churchill and removed the cigar which he had in his hand. Churchill was miffed and showed his displeasure in the portrait. #filmphoto #film #filmsnotdead #photography #arthistory #portrait #portraitphotography - @thefilmcameraco on Instagram
