71 year old Howard came up to the lesson area walking slowly & hunched over with a snowboard in his hand. He didnt look athletic in the least. When I asked what his goals were for the day, he said slowly, Oh, Id like to make some turns. I couldnt see that happening, but admired his hope. I was half terrified & half excited to get to work with him, doing everything I could to help keep him safe. A former law professor, he kept me entertained with stories from when he worked with senators in DC during the Carter administration & the time he hitchhiked across northern Africa. He may have looked frail, but with his board on he was stronger than many students half his age. With some teacher assistance he was making s-turns before lunch! I could hardly contain my excitement.
