#SummerCampRun Journal Entry โJoyful Movement Part 2โ. As I crawl on the floor with my child, I sometimes think, โwhen did joyful movement and exploration become so complicated?โ This led me to reflect on some thoughts I wrote down and shared in February 2018: My life used to revolve around numbers. First, time (erg times, mile, etc.), then time and weight, then eventually, just my weight, ruled what seemed like most of my thoughts on a daily basis. Even more than 12 years later, itโs hard to talk about my eating disorder. It took me years to associate myself with those two words. Iโve become comfortable talking about this with my friends, but I think this is the first time Iโve ever posted about it publicly. For the last 12 years, itโs been a journey. From late night workouts to burn off all the calories I ate during the day, to working out for up to three hours a day during my freshman year of college (because I thought not doing so would mean I was a lazy person), to stopping exercise completely for months (and eventually years) at a time because I got tired of it wearing on me so much. I struggled to prioritize my physical health without compromising my mental health and vice versa. Last weekendโs marathon was the first โbigโ athletic goal Iโve undertaken in 12 years. I switched things up this time. I didnโt weigh myself 4x a day. I didnโt measure my runs meticulously, and I didnโt track my times too regularly either. I didnโt compare myself to others and, more importantly, I didnโt compare myself to any form of my past self. I measured a general distance, laced up, and hit the road with a smile. I loved the freedom this gave me to actually just enjoy the sensation of running, rather than constantly feel like I was chasing a figure/dream/version of myself that I would never catch. I wanted to run my first marathon the same way. No crowds. No music. Just immense gratitude that, after 12 years, I feel just as healthy mentally as I do physically. If youโve been kind enough to take the time to read this far, I just want to thank you. As with everything I do, I did none of this alone. Tomorrow marks the publication of our new book, Old World Italian. I think its a very good cookbook, it represents what we love about Italian food (although we love it so much volume 2 is already writing itself). Its a personal book, it includes many of our dearest friends. One of those friends is a restaurant, Al Gatto Nero in Torino. They contributed 2 recipes, my favourite and Mimis. Both very simple. I had dinner there last week with Hudson and Louise, first time since we returned from our southern Italian odyssey - thats when we gave a copy of the book to Andrea and his guys. We also had lunch at Gatto Nero on Friday with old friends and new. Ive met a lot of good people lately. Likeminded, as they say. We had a great evening with @john_j_whelan recently. He is making his mark in the world of restaurant design, got all the right ideas. Chances are you will visit a restaurant designed by him soon. Chances are you will love it. He said to me (and this may be a borrowed line but maybe its his, if it is toucheฬ!) The French fetishize food but Italians celebrate it. Its another way to describe a classic. Something that survives, stick to the values. And one day a guy from Iceland walks through the door and falls in love ...
