I don’t remember previously hearing about #nationaldaughtersday but apparently it’s celebrated this weekend. I wrote about not being able to see my mother for the Globe and Mail. This week has been lovely and intense with the book in the world and more and more I feel how powerfully I want my mother to be seen and known. I am not a perfect daughter, no one is, but I feel especially far from any possible ideal. Our relationship was, like all intimate relationships, complex and filled with contradictions. My mother did not want me to tell her story. I am compelled to tell her story. That has been complicated, but what is not complicated is my love for my mother; like my love for my son, it is overwhelming in its simplicity. I love my mother and telling stories is the best way I know how to love her. It is the best tool I’ve got to fight the pressures of erasure. I need to see my mother, and part of this act of witness, of recovery, is to invite you to see her too.
