✨My yoga journey: PART 1: I was first drawn to Yoga around the age of 17. I began attending Bikram Yoga, and I loved it because I felt like I was working HARD. At the time I was constantly pushing myself physically and mentally as I undertook full-time dance training, so being pushed in different ways through this style of yoga training felt really satisfying. It was also nice to go somewhere with no music, and not have to strain my brain to remember choreography. Everyone at the studio was super calm, open and friendly. This was a pleasant change to the competitive environment of the dance studios I was attending at the time. A few years later, after returning from a few overseas working dance contracts, I found myself going through some emotional upheavals after a tumultuous couple of years. After powering through the loss of a parent, grandparent and the breakdown of a long term relationship, I found myself feeling very out of sorts, lost and confused. Seeking calm, friendly people again, I headed back to the yoga studio, this time a new studio that had popped up in my area. They offered different classes to what I was used to. Their classes were far easier for me than the intense and hot Bikram yoga classes I had become accustomed to. Physically I found the classes easy, but I always left feeling so calm. Wanting more of this calm in my life, I started attending different yoga studios all over melbourne and in fact all over the world. As my dance and performance career took me on trips around Australia, and I would spend two-three months in each capital city, I would explore different studios and teachers wherever I went. My yoga education was therefore not linear, as in, I didn’t study under one style or teacher or guru for any long amount of time. I see this as both positive and negative. I feel I learned a lot about teaching styles in this way, but my yoga education, particularly in yoga philosophy, was disjointed. - @workinwithstef on Instagram

💥Simple Ways to target the Soleus Muscle!💥 - 🔎When talking about muscle activity last week, I mentioned that the Soleus has been recorded to develop 6.5-8x bodyweight💥 (Based on Dorn et Al. 2012). This makes this muscle a top contributor as you run, especially for long distances! - 💎This reflects the importance of this muscle during running. Therefore, it may be key to incorporate exercises that target this area! - 🔑So here are some simple exercises that I use to initially target the soleus muscle: 1️⃣Soleus Wall Sits- This a simple and effective way to isometrically load not only the soleus, but also the quads, which is also a key muscle as you run. Shoutout to @zerenpt for this one! 2️⃣Seated Heel Raise- A simple exercise that requires minimal equipment! Just remember the demands of this muscle and you may need to progress this exercise further to prepare for the demands of running. I posted a question 3 weeks ago asking about my movement pattern(i.e what I was doing in the picture). There were two photos. Almost everyone ( I would say 95%) said RDL in both the pictures. _____ How you position yourself matters a lot because that will decide the primary muscles being used in the movement. Lets break it down : Left(SDL) : Right(RDL) RDL - my hip goes back like I want to tap the wall with my hip. As a consequence of that movement, my torso leans forward and I get my weight down till my shins(below the knee). Now this position is primarily focused on glutes. This end position is where your glutes are in the lengthened state after which you reverse the movement and get your glutes to contract as you stand upright. SDL - my hip does goes back but not as much as in RDL. The primary focus here is my hamstrings, so I would focus on getting my hamstring lengthened. SDL movement typically goes much lower than RDL which is why your lower back too takes the load. Both of these variations would work on your posterior chain but this lil change in positioning would make a hell of a difference as your goals gets specific. Why the ability to focus makes a difference . . . In most models of strength training, it’s easy for the practitioner to slip into complacency, given that the lifts we practice are very repetitive. There is a lot that we can learn from just observing how we perform a set, even at percentages we’re are very comfortable with. . . . It’s a good practice to record and review how we moved during training. During my recent squat session, the first set felt pretty ok. It was only when I reviewed the clip that I realized the degree of which my ankles were rolling in. I’ve had injuries in both my ankles and it’s something that I’ve been working on for a long time. . . . I used to accept that the rolling in of the ankles is how I will squat for the rest of my life, but eventually realized it was absurd that I continue to seek progression in the ability to move heavier weights without demanding better movement quality. . . .
