Lena Horne and Nuffie MacNeal Calloway were friends before Nuffie met Cab. When Cab, not knowing this, introduced Nuffie to Lena... it was all the laughing that drowned out Cabs big smile. Born on this day in 1917 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY Lena Horne at 16 began singing at the Cotton Club in Harlem beginning a long and illustrious career as an actress and as a civil rights activist. During World War II, when entertaining the troops for the USO, she refused to perform for segregated audiences or for groups in which German POWs were seated in front of black servicemen, according to her Kennedy Center biography. Because the U.S. Army refused to allow integrated audiences, she staged her show for a mixed audience of black U.S. soldiers and white German POWs. Seeing the black soldiers had been forced to sit in the back seats, she walked off the stage to the first row where the black troops were seated and performed with the Germans behind her. After quitting the USO in 1945 because of the organizations policy of segregating audiences, Horne financed tours of military camps herself. She was at an NAACP rally with Medgar Evers in Jackson, Mississippi, the weekend before Evers was assassinated. She also met President John F. Kennedy at the White House two days before he was assassinated. She was at the March on Washington and spoke and performed on behalf of the NAACP, SNCC, and the National Council of Negro Women. She also worked with Eleanor Roosevelt to pass anti-lynching laws “My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.” —Lena Horne - @cabcalloway on Instagram

Balraj Sahni on his conversation with Rabindranath Tagore- By @lettersofrevolution Those days I was a teacher at Shanti Niketan. One day I went to invite Rabindranath Tagore for the annual Hindi SammeIan, when he started a discussion with me During the course of our conversation he asked, “Besides teaching what else are you doing over here?” “I write stories in Hindi which are published in the leading Hindi magazines. During my stay here, I have written a lot and also earned a good name for myself.” ‘But your mother tongue is not Hindi. You are a Punjabi. Why don’t you write in the Punjabi language?” I felt that Tagore was a narrow-minded, provincial man; at that time I did not realize that an artist must first be nationally known in the true sense of the word, before he is internationally acclaimed. “But Hindi is the national language. It is the language of the entire nation. Why should I write in any provincial language, when I can write for the entire country?” I said. “I write in Bengali, which is a provincial language; yet, not only the people of Hindustan but people all over the world read what I write.” “I am not a great writer like you, I am just an insignificant writer.” “It is not the question of greatness or smallness; a writer has a relationship with his own birthplace, his people and his language. It is only from them that he can receive the warmth and feeling of being one of them.” “Probably you do not have much knowledge about the conditions prevailing in my State. In Punjab, we either write in Hindi or in Urdu. No one writes in Punjabi. Punjabi is a very backward language. If you want an honest opinion, it cannot be called a language. It is a sub-language, a dialect of the Hindi language.” “I do not agree with you. The Punjabi literature or the Bengali literature is very old. Can you look down upon that language and call it outdated or backward, the language in which great poets like Guru Nanak have written?” *Read more in the comments* - @thepunjabclub on Instagram

Mr. Florentine Ariosto Jones Born in New Hampshire 1841. He fought in the Civil War as an enlisted man in 13th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. He gave his occupation as “watchmaker”, and there is a photograph in the Library of Congress that may be of the young Jones holding a pocket watch. There is a resemblance to a photograph we know to be of him as an older man. . •Soon after the war was over, he worked for E. Howard & Co., one of the best watch companies in the USA, rising to the position of Superintendent. However, in 1867 he went to Europe looking for a place to begin his own company. His goal was to combine “all the excellence of the American system of mechanism with the more skillful hand labor of the Swiss” to produce watches for the American market. . •Jones crossed the atlantic to build his own manufacture in Switzerland. He met Moser in Le Locle and the seed for the first watch company in the northeast of Switzerland was planted. In 1869, Jones rented a building that belonged to Moser in the Rheinstrasse, and in 1874 he was already expanding to a new plant. This was close to Moser’s hydroelectric plant and is the current headquarters of IWC. #fajones #iwcvibes #iwcvintage #vintageiwc #iwc #iwcingenieur #iwcportugieser #iwcportofino #iwcpilot #iwcbigpilot #iwcdavinci - @iwc_heritage on Instagram
