Monday’s, a day of just me and El. I felt so guilty for putting Fern in preschool all day and wanting that time without her. For weeks I’ve worried that I’ve done the right thing even though I did it because I felt like she wasn’t getting enough interaction with other children and I felt guilty for it. Guilt consumes us as parents. We’re always doubting and worrying. I now worry that she’s away from me for too long, that El is missing her and gets bored at home with just me. Can you hear my thought process? Guilty for doing it, guilty for not. When does it end? Today, wed like to highlight one of our volunteer leaders, Renae Akau. Renae leads the charge this year as Chair for the Hawaii Island Walk to End Alzheimers set for Saturday, September 26. Renae walks for her grandma, Christina Tuisasaopo- Andrews who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s over a decade ago. Renae shared, Watching this once strong-willed woman deteriorate mentally has been devastating for our family. However, we are grateful for our time with grandma and although she may not always remember our names or faces she always wishes us well and says a prayer for us each time we visit. Many of us have a story, a reason why we support a cause. I am here along with many volunteers in our community because of my grandma and the countless others around the world who have been impacted by this disease. 🌸 FUNDRAISER 🌺 Hello friends, these past few weeks I have been examining myself, learning, and seeking to move to action. I want to give all that I am and all that I have to bring reconciliation and change. I couldn’t just stay silent and still, so I began to draw. I began to draw as I listened to the voices of Black brothers and sisters, as I researched systemic injustice and racism in our country, as I reflected on my own heart and brought to light my own wrongs and misconceptions. These are just a few of my expressions that I have turned into stickers. I will be selling these stickers and donating all proceeds to Equal Justice Initiative @eji_org I will also be matching the first $150 and will be donating with you! I’ll also be partnering with a friend’s employer matching, QUADRUPLING your impact! All donations over the first $150 will still be matched so doubled!!! 👋🏾 Jessika & Fatema here with an update. We will not be hosting our annual September market this year, after 5 years it is time for us to take a break & reconsider the future of Maritime Makers. When we first started organizing markets there was a need for inclusive, family oriented & affordable craft events. In the past few years there has been an explosion of events & growth in our community. There has also been a shift in leadership from companies like @Etsy to competitive, less community focused business. We stopped partnering with Etsy last year & instead of addressing our concerns Etsy found new leaders willing to host a competing market in Halifax this year. We are disappointed & hurt that they would put our community in a position to choose sides between a multinational US company with billions in capital or local women who volunteer. After careful thought instead of contributing to confusion or competition we decided against hosting our market. We will re-evaluate our plan in October after the federal election since @jessikahepburn is going to be the NDP candidate for South Shore - St. Margaret’s! Fatema will be focusing on family, community work at her local masjid & Dartmouth North at large, helping Jessika’s campaign when she has time + re-evaluate her business/get her hands dirty making new jewellery. We are in no way affiliated with any Etsy branded events that may happen in NS & are firm in our position that Etsy’s shareholder takeover has aligned the company with bad business practices & investors including Trump affiliated shareholders/corporate headquarters. Busy in the studio today for a gorgeous Boho shoot tomorrow. I dont often go to styled shoots as they can be anywhere in the country, but this one is fairly near with some fabulous suppliers. Being a Mom is the greatest gift and the most challenging thing I have ever done. Every day I’m mixed with emotions and riding the highs and lows of motherhood. Am I doing enough for him? Spending enough time with him? Working on milestones enough for his hearing loss? Giving him the best nutrition possible (refuses any milk but Breastmilk-and I weened two months ago), the list goes on. Then when I look at him and he smiles my heart completely melts and I’m reminded to take a deep breath and trust that I’m doing my best and that’s enough for him. ⁣Do you need to be sore after workout or sweat bullets in order to make progress❓ NO❗Definitely not❗⠀ ⠀ Here are some reasons why you may feel sore after training:⠀ ✔ Introducing new exercises to your program⠀ ✔ Slowing down on the eccentric part of the exercise ⠀ ✔ Pausing in the stretch position of the exercise ⠀ ✔ Higher volume of exercises (which have greater resistance in the lengthen position of a muscle) ⠀ ✔ Coming back into training after a long break or simply not training often enough ⠀ ⠀ However, soreness after training or how much you sweat during workout will have ZERO correlation with how effective your workout was or the potential to build muscle! I vividly remember sitting in my basement with a strangers newborn in my hands, not having a single clue how to get her in the pose I had in my head. ⁣ ⁣ At that very moment I vowed to do everything in my power to not just learn the art of newborn photography, but to be the very BEST at it.⁣ ⁣ And so I poured every ounce of myself, every penny I had, every waking moment into doing just that. And when I succeeded, while it felt good, it still didn’t feel like it was enough.⁣ ⁣ You see, when I set my mind to something I give my whole heart and soul to it. Photography has allowed me to have a voice through art, it allowed me to raise my babies at home and not go back to public america. It allowed to me travel, and it’s brought some amazing people into my life. ⁣ ⁣ But now, I must free up some space in my heart to be able to pursue my soul purpose in life, and that’s helping women find their voice, strength and peace with their bodies. ⁣ ⁣ With that said, I have decided I will no longer be doing any photography outside of 3 newborns per month. If you currently have a session scheduled with me, don’t worry! A N G E L F O O D When I was a girl in Kenya, we delivered food weekly to neighboring villages. I can remember asking Ruth, a beautiful boisterous, huggable woman, with whom I spent most of my days, Why? Her response, “My love, you never know when you might feed an angel.” Three weeks ago, I hit a wall. Five months of trying to balance family and teaching in a radically different, new world—I’d neglected to feed my own soul and care for my own sidelined, sensitive heart. I know what I am about to say, and still, I forget. As my teacher @johnvosler often reminds his students, “We forget because we have to—to remember.” And it couldn’t be truer. We can only welcome and offer to others all of our own beautiful being to the extent we welcome ourselves. We must tend to our inner world to extend a welcome to our outer world. This time in which we find ourselves has become a marathon; it is not a sprint. And we can’t afford to have any of us drop out of this race. Think about what it looks like to nourish and reconnect to your soul and to make room in your heart for the parts of you that are tired, weary and worn. Think about what you might need to love your own heart so that it might be open to an other – a stranger, a friend, a neighbor – your partner and family. That reference Ruth made, when I was a girl, to feeding angels comes from Genesis, Chapter 18 in which Abraham and Sarah meet three strangers outside their tent. Abraham says to them: “Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way…” And he brings them food and drink and they rest a while. Only later does he learn that they are divine messengers. How are we called, friends, to welcome the “stranger” — as we at times become estranged from our own soul? MOV is excited to welcome Jasmine Wilson to the team in the new role of Indigenous Programs and Community Engagement Coordinator. Jasmine is a Musqueam community member, who has recently completed her BA in Arts at @universityofbc - She has previously worked with the Musqueam Summer Recreation program and Salishan Catering.⁠ ⁠ Jasmine began working at MOV in 2018 as an Intern in the @museumofvan Education Department through a museum mentorship program funded by @rbc - After completing this internship, Jasmine became an auxiliary staff member, leading educational programs and tours as part of MOV’s Learning Team. These include tours of the Haida Now exhibition, delivering the Resilience and Reconciliation school program in the c̓əsnaʔəm: the city before the city exhibition, and assisting with the annual Winter Wander Event in Vanier Park. She also supported youth during MOV’s Reconciled Futures Art Camp for Indigenous Youth in 2019. Did I get you??? 🤣🤣🤣 No freaking way my body could survive a 5th pregnancy (I miscarried after my 1st).... after 3 big baby deliveries (2 naturally, 1 c section and prolapse surgery to repair- no joke it resembled a smash crab 🔨🦀 !) .... not to mention the mental pressure of a 4th and running a business. To ensure this never happens my hubby had the snip ✂️ 🎾 🎾 (big shout out to my main man- bloody legend! Thanks honey appreciate it and so does my body!) I’m grateful for being able to have children and thankful however this pelvic floor can hardly jump on a trampoline without nearly needing a loo and my hormones go freaking crazy on any birth control , Mirena (don’t get me started on that on) or implanol😉 - so it’s nice to just have fun now 💥💥. In saying all this.... I felt all nostalgic today when shooting for my online clothing store @stylemeover and doing styling videos and including preggy style (can’t exactly use a pregnant model in lockdown atm hey!).... I got my strap on out (don’t go there you dirty b*tch) and took me back to the belly rubs... I do miss rubbing the bump! The game was meant to determine if I liked someone or someone liked me. Not only has it been several months of blood, sweat, and tears, making sure that you are consuming a hefty amount of calories, sacrificing time and events with family and friends, enjoying the occasional drink but for the most part saying no, going to bed early and getting adequate sleep, maximizing recovery to the fullest, and making sure that you’ve done everything you could for this moment....These amazing people have also navigated there season through a pandemic (for good reason) which has added more than a month to the season, meaning, their bodies have endured a pretty good beating by now. It’s pretty incredible! This year might look a little different....But, I can’t wait to watch all of you crush it.
