I’ve been thinking about French painting a lot lately for a host of reasons, and this is definitely one of my absolute favorites. Despite being over five hundred and fifty years old, the right wing of the Melun Diptych is an extraordinarily “modern” work of art, a terrible cliché I usually avoid, but in this case find utterly unavoidable. It’s an exquisite study in geometry, from the perpendicular lines of the Virgin Mary’s marble-encrusted throne to the ovoid shape of her perfectly plucked head. And then there are the buoyant bodies of the red seraphim and blue cherubim (who incidentally have always reminded me, in the very best possible way, of juvenile versions of the Michelin Man as interpreted by Jeff Koons). The spheres, too, are remarkable, each as perfect as a little celestial orb—the angels’ heads, the iridescent pearls, and of course, the Virgin’s breasts. Impossibly spaced, one covered and the other bared to reveal its marble-like “flesh,” they are fantasy appendages for the Virgin in her otherworldly glory as Queen of Heaven. Although exposed to show its role as a source of sustenance for the Christ Child, the Virgin’s uncovered breast can hardly be mistaken for a real lactating breast. The intersection of divinity, woman and symbol takes a very memorable form here indeed, especially since tradition holds that Mary’s features were modelled on those of Agnes Sorel, mistress to King Charles VII… To conclude, I leave you with a passage from Clement Marot’s lengthy ode to the beautiful breast (“Blason du beau tetin”), first published in 1536: […] Breast that never moves, Neither to come, nor to go, Neither to run, nor to dance. read caption..🌹🥀🌸🌸 ഊരക്ക് ഒടുക്കത്തെ വേദന., എനിക്കൊന്ന് ഇരിക്കണം, പാത്തൂ... നിനക്ക് എന്താ വട്ടാണോ.. മംഗല്യം കഴിയാനുള്ളതാ. അവിടെ പോയിട്ട് ഇതൊന്നും നടക്കൂല. അമ്മായിയമ്മമാർ പതിനെട്ട് ജാതിയാ..! ഇതും പറഞ്ഞ് ആയിശാത്തുമ്മ വെറ്റില ചമച്ച് നീട്ടി തുപ്പി. ഇതു കണ്ടതും പാത്തൂന് ഓക്കാനം വന്നതും ഒപ്പമായിരുന്നു. പേറ്റിന് നിക്കാൻ വന്നതാ....!! അതു കൊണ്ടാവും നാവിന് ഭയങ്കര വഴുക്ക്. അല്ല പിന്നെ... ഇപ്പോൾ താത്തക്ക് വേണ്ടി മിണ്ടാതെയിരുന്നേ പറ്റു. രോഷത്തോടെ പാത്തു പിറുപിറുത്തു. അനക്കറിയോ ഞങ്ങളൊക്കെ പണ്ട് കൂട്ടികൊണ്ടെന്നാ.... പിന്നെ, നേരിട്ട് സംസാരിക്കാൻ കൂടി പറ്റുല്ലേനി.... ഇതും പറഞ്ഞ് അയിശാത്തുമ അടുത്ത വെറ്റില തൊള്ളയിലിട്ട്. ഇന്നത്തെ കുട്ടികളോട് ഇതൊക്കെ പറിഞ്ഞിട്ടെന്താ.? ഓർക്ക് ഒരു കുന്ത്രാണ്ടം പിടിച്ച് നടന്നാ മതിയല്ലോ.! എന്നാ പിന്നെ കല്യാണം കഴിക്കണോ ആയിശാത്തുമ്മാ....? ഇതും പറഞ്ഞ് പാത്തു ഉമ്മാനെ ഇടം കണ്ണിട്ട് ഊറിച്ചിരിച്ചു. നിനക്ക് അതൊന്നും പറഞ്ഞാൽ മനസ്സില്ലാവില്ല. അനക്കറിയോ പാത്തൂ... എൻ്റെ പന്ത്രണ്ടാം വയസ്സിൽ കെട്ടിയോൻ കെട്ടികൊണ്ടെന്ന സമയത്ത് തിന്നാൻ കിട്ടാ കഞ്ഞി വെള്ളാ. അത് തന്നെ എത്ര പേർക്ക് എന്ന് വെച്ചിട്ടാ. വറ്റ് ഒക്കെ കിട്ടാൽ ഭാഗ്യം. എന്നിട്ടാണെങ്കിലോ വിശപ്പ് അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ കിടക്കും. അന്നൊക്കെ ൻ്റെ ഉമ്മ പറയും പെണ്ണായാൽ മുറ്റമടിക്കുമ്പോ പുല്ലുപറിക്കണം, അരി വറുക്കുമ്പോ ഒരു നുള്ളു പാത്ത് വെക്കണം. അന്നത്തെ ചില അമ്മായിമ്മാർ അരി വറുക്കിപ്പിക്കും. എന്തിനാ..!! എല്ലാ അരി മണിയും നെരി പ്പൊരി കൊണ്ടാൽ ഓള്ക്ക് നല്ല മനസ്സാന്ന്. ഇതുപറഞ്ഞ് ആയിശാത്തുമ്മ മുട്ടിന് കൈവെച്ചു. ഹാവു... ആയിശുമ്മ അന്ന് ഒരു അമ്മായിയമ്മ ആയി ജനിക്കേണിനില്ലേ...? ഈ പെണ്ണ് ഒരു തർക്കുത്തരക്കാരിയാ.. !! ഇതൊന്നും പാടില്ല വേറെ വീട്ടിക്ക് പോവാനുള്ളതാ!! ✍️അഫീഫ.പി - @trapped_lines on Instagram

“Armored Saint with Crown of Flowers” 20x16 inches, oil on panel. ©️2019 Fatima Ronquillo. Private collection. This was inspired by a 16th C. painting of St. Maurice by Lucas Cranach the Elder. According to Eucherius, Maurice was a third century leader of a legion of soldiers from Thebes (Luxor/Egypt). He refused orders to enact violence and persecution against his fellow Christians. In retaliation, the Roman emperor Maximian executed him and the entire Theban Legion. St. Maurice is also the patron saint of a Catholic parish and church in the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans that was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina and consequently deconsecrated. The last two weeks have been a time of enormous collective grief and rage over the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and too many countless others. In the midst of so much heartache and despair, I am also hopeful that through solidarity we will make way for meaningful change and reform towards justice and equality. - @fatimaronquillostudio on Instagram

Maternal Affection by Hugues Merle, 1867 🖌 A native of Saint-Marcellin, Hugues Merle studied in Paris with the history painter Léon Cogniet. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1847 until his death and won second-class medals in 1861 and 1863. Merle achieved considerable success in his lifetime. He was favored by the imperial government and was made a Chevalier in the Legion of Honor in 1866. Merle’s oeuvre consists largely of allegories and humble genre scenes, and his works were often compared to those of his contemporary William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
