My installation is open for one more week at Mills College Art Museum! This is FutureHellNow. Sometimes I refer to this part of my practice as my Survival Series. FutureHellNow is both an installation and a performance space. Its about that inner world of panic especially present for me when I am in my safest domestic spaces. During gallery hours you can take your shoes off and get in this bed. I have left an article for you to read by the Institute for Precarious Consciousness. They write that Each phase of capitalism has a particular affect which holds it together...One aspect of every phase’s dominant affect is that it is a public secret, something that everyone knows, but nobody admits, or talks about. As long as the dominant affect is a public secret, it remains effective, and strategies against it will not emerge. Public secrets are typically personalised. The problem is only visible at an individual, psychological level; the social causes of the problem are concealed. Each phase blames the system’s victims for the suffering that the system causes. And it portrays a fundamental part of its functional logic as a contingent and localised problem. In the modern era (until the post-war settlement), the dominant affect was misery.... When misery stopped working as a control strategy, capitalism switched to boredom....Today’s public secret is that everyone is anxious. Anxiety has spread from its previous localised locations (such as sexuality) to the whole of the social field. All forms of intensity, self-expression, emotional connection, immediacy, and enjoyment are now laced with anxiety. It has become the linchpin of subordination.... What we now need is a machine for fighting anxiety – and this is something we do not yet have. One of their thesis states that in order to reverse our perspective and see not from anxiety but from our own desires we need to learn to define what is happening inside of us as real, we need to disrupt the public secret that our experiences are a result of individual problems. DID YOU KNOW❓The building that is now home to The Greenvale Lofts at the corner of Ochterloney Street and Irishtown Road in downtown Dartmouth used to be Greenvale School – an important part of Dartmouth’s history.📓 The school building was designed by locally famous architect Andrew Cobb and built in 1915. Greenvale School hosted the first kindergarten class in Canada! It was also the first high school in the former City of Dartmouth. Young Dartmouth scholars took classes there until the school was de-commissioned in 1980.📘📗📕 The “new” Greenvale School building was built of brick, which was unusual at the time. The remaining maples trees on the property are the original trees on the school grounds and were uncommon species during the era of construction.🍁 The sculpture you see in the photo, School Chair, was created by local artist Iian Sandler in 2013. Its scholarly design nods to the history of the former Greenvale School. School Chair is made of painted aluminum with an accompanying Pink Pearl eraser-style podium. ❓BONUS DID YOU KNOW? The current building was erected to replace the old wooden Greenvale School that was destroyed by fire. The original building is captured in this historic photo taken in 1897. (Image ID: 1987_032_004) A handwritten note at the bottom states that Harry Moseley stands in the foreground with Ruth, aged 4 years. Personally I do not like the green color but i do like the shape of this bench because it looks like it is nice and curvy so it will be very comfortable, also it is a soft texture so it won’t hurt at all! A problem with this chair is that a small child might get there fingers stuck in the holes, but overall a great bench! As part of iheART Main Street Art Challenge, @PortCreditBIA commissioned three @thepatchproject artists @mcclusk, @marco_bertuzzo and @lapirie to paint their works on 12 benches! Erin’s series reflects natural scenes that are connected to local ecology. She is interested in the composition of patterns, and wanted to take motifs prevalent in her artwork to create bright and colourful designs on the benches. Lauren’s series points to the inherent interconnectedness between humans and our shared environment. Influenced by Port Credit’s geography. two of the benches are inspired by our relationship to land, while the other two reference our relationship to water. The desire for human connection and physical touch intertwine with the desire for physical and spiritual connection to the earth. Marco’s series alludes to the symbolism of the number four - whether it be the four seasons, the four elements, the four humours, or the four cardinal directions. In reality there is no message, just a network of jumbled meaning. But it is within the process of trying to find the meaning, that true engagement with this work occurs. With the support of RBC Royal Bank @rbc, we were able to bring 42 activations to life in collaboration with 25 local creatives and 11 BIAs.
