Despite things being “slower”, it’s amazing how much more demanding this job is. We all started fighting the current almost 5 months ago and through the support of you all, we live to see another week. Between the general hopelessness of the economy, the lack of finality and all of the other malaise that comes along with this pandemic, we are in much need of a nap. Therefore, we won’t be open for takeout this weekend. We will restart back up next week, refreshed and ready to get back in the game. If there ever was a year that tried to crush your soul this could be it but my morning super power mantras have really helped me keep the demons of doubt at bay. I even have it painted on the wall of my garden so it’s the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night. I just figure that pandemic life is going to sort itself out eventually so while I wait I need to do everything in my power to get myself ready for when the world finally Re opens. Repeating Positive affirmations may make you feel a bit silly but I figured that if I can’t say it to myself then I can’t expect other people to see it within me either. I call this stepping into my light so that when the man dem outside the corner shop call me Boss man I actually believe it. So here goes : I am strong I am powerful I am unique I am loved I am important I am needed Because I’m me And most importantly no matter what the universe will have me think I must remember at all times that I Am indeed Enough. Repeat times infinite when needed throughout the day and keep pinned above computer screen so the next time someone asks you to work for exposure and no fee you can tell them that your amazing beautiful spirit can’t feed itself on double taps, love hearts and algorithms alone. Disrespect and lack of appreciation should not be tolerated at anytime particularly during a year when your heart should be filled with as much joy as it can find. Surround yourself with a tribe that lifts you up, looks forward to seeing you and breaks out the confetti when you enter the room because your glow is so bright and your vibes are so strong. New York is truly hauntingly beautiful these days (literally you can just walk in the middle of the street) but it’s also been hard to experience NY like this. On September 26, 1959, a flash fire broke out at 209 East 61st Street, where Montgomery Clift had been living since 1951. The actor and an unidentified male friend (according to reports of the time) were escorted to safety on the roof of the building by the fire department. The fire caused Clift to move to a townhouse a few doors down, at 217 East 61st Street.⠀ -⠀ Though some early biographies claim that Clift’s supposed shame over his homosexuality led to his substance-abuse problems, there is little evidence to support this, and friends and family assert that he was not worried about being gay. Just about 10 years ago, on July 2nd, I moved to this wild city. Today on a run, I passed my first apartment. That fire escape next to the first floor window was mine. I didn’t know anyone, I slept on a twin bed that was in the room when I moved in, right above a chop shop. I was broke from traveling and wasn’t sure exactly why I chose this place for home, but I figured it out pretty quickly. Even now, with everything going on, this city still finds ways of reminding you how special your time here is. How much the struggle forces you to find new gears and keep pushing. Passing this apartment today reminded why I’ve pushed so hard to continue to try and create something special here. It’s not for everyone, but today more than ever, I feel like a New Yorker. Having been self-quarantined for exactly a week now, today was the day I opened my window, turned on Lykke Li to nightclub volume, and danced like a lunatic to get the blood pumping. (I recommend the Magician Remix of “I Follow Rivers” to get started on this.) I’ve always noticed that the man across the street likes to open his window wide in a way that feels old-fashioned—wide enough to fall out—and smoke cigarettes while looking over the street contemplatively. I have no idea why I think he is a painter. One floor above, where there are often heavy maroon curtains drawn, 3 days ago I watched a teenage boy smoke a joint through the curtain folds; his hands rolled it just above the ledge, and then he kept poking his head out to inhale and exhale quickly, retreating behind the curtains between tokes. “We had fire blowing out of every window on that second floor of the house. Ladder 32 got into the building, onto the second floor and started searching. #Engine62 immediately began stretching lines to start the suppression by getting water on the fire. The #Ladder32 inside team found three children in one of the bedrooms. They immediately removed them to the street and turned them over to members of #Engine79 who started CPR. They were then immediately turned over to members of our EMS bureau who then continued the efforts and transported them to Jacobi Hospital. All three children at this time are in critical but stable condition at the hospital. This was coordinated really well,” says FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Joseph Ferrante on scene of an all-hands fire in Bronx. #FDNY Captain Daniel McEnroe, Ladder 32, says, “My irons man Firefighter Matthew Boney forced the door. Heavy fire met us there. At that point my can man, Firefighter Mario DePalma, and I went down the hallway to the back. Firefighter Boney started to make the search from the door. Firefighter Boney and I met in the second bedroom where we saw the three kids on the bed. We called it in, and Firefighter Boney grabbed the two and went, and I grabbed the third and followed him out. There was a ton of fire, a ton of heat, and a lot of smoke. Everyone here did a great job. It makes me proud to be involved.” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Paul Miano says, “We had EMS members from #Station20 #Station27 and our Special Operations Command who received the children after they were rescued from the building. Their efforts continued throughout their transport to the hospital in which they were able to resuscitate all three children. An incident like this just highlights the coordinated effort between the fire and EMS personnel. It also highlights the ability of the men and women of Emergency Medical Services and how the fight doesn’t just end in the building, it continues all the way to the hospital.
