🔥Introducing 2020 Wildland Fire Digital Storytelling Micro-Grant Winner Jake Murie (@jake.murie)!🔥 Jake was selected in the Photography category and is one of our US winners. About Jake: I’ve been fighting fire for nine years, six of which have been on a hotshot crew. During the offseason I am never in the same place for long, either living out of my truck or backpack. JAKES PROJECT VISION: The project contains three parts. For part one I will take a portrait of crew members from my hotshot crew during the beginning of the season with the goal being to capture what we look like coming into a fire season; usually healthy, fit, and fresh from a barber. For part two, I will take a portrait of each crew member on a shift towards the end of the season. In post processing I will merge the two photos with one half of the face from the start of season portrait, and the other from the end of the season portrait. The third part will contain photos taken throughout the season, acting as a narrative to show why the physical changes took place. Yes, our country & even our world is divided rt now. But there are many factors that go into that division. The stat shown here wowed me. We’re consuming WAY more info now, than our brains ever have in the history of humankind - faster than evolution can keep up. . Rewind to simpler times....the mid ‘90s ;)...not too far ago, huh? We’d read the newspaper....log on to our AOL usually through dial-up, check the 3 new emails we received, & then be off to work - typically on some major project we were collaborating on. . Consider this...there were no: Slack msgs, text msgs, push notifications, IG/FBook/Twitter/Snap/Linked-In DMs...you didn’t have folders to get back to emails that hadn’t been answered in months bc of mounting “more urgent” ones...your TV wasn’t in your hand, your news feed wasn’t a never-ending scroll of real-time updates. . Tech has made our world faster & even more efficient. But it’s also contributed to a lot of our problems (& I’m not talking in the way most talk abt it: social feeds that confirm our biases). . One of the best experiences of my life was traveling to Jakarta, Indonesia, to learn Qigong Meditation from a Master. Qi, in Chinese, means energy: the energy we make in our bodies in our cells’ mitochondria, from O2 we breath & food we eat. That energy is our fuel. But guess what? These brains we have in our noggins, tho they only account for 2% of our body wt...if we use them ALL day, they can burn over 2K calories, in a day. 2k sound at all similar to what we take in thru food in a given day? And I wish our brains could make us thin. Metabolism & WHAT we eat play a big part. . So if we’re exhausting the energy/fuel our bodies take IN from ALL the new stimuli we’re exposed to above, where’s that leave us? . It’s why we wake up more exhausted than we fell asleep (no energy left for repair). BUT, back to the division in our country/world: we’re shorter tempered, more anxious, have less to give to debate, angrier, too spent to consider alternate opinions. . SHATTERED DREAMS: Kishori Raut Kurmi, 65, of Bishrampur, Parsa has a family of seven. He lives in a small house with a thatched hay roof. Four years ago his son Mukesh, 39, left to go to Saudi Arabia, where he would get a job and support his family. He borrowed Rs 1,50,000 from someone from the village and was slowly paying his way. “He had planned to pay everything off this year,” says Kishori. When the pandemic started, the Kurmi family was making do with what they had. Three months ago, Kishor was sitting outside in his yard getting vegetables ready for dinner when the phone rang. “They told me my son, Mukesh, had died in Saudi Arabia,” he says. The family learned that Mukesh died in a road accident while trying to send money home. A few days later his son’s body arrived home in a coffin. “I am devastated,” says Kishori, “We sent our son abroad and we were weaving many dreams, but the dreams are shattered. According to the statistics from the Foreign Employment Promotion Board, an average of two Nepali migrant workers die abroad every day. Mukesh’s company has not sent the money his son earned, and Kishori has not heard anything from the Nepali government on compensation or relief. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has not been able to mourn his son’s death properly. For now all Kishori can think of is how to survive another day, “We are poor people. श्याम सरन नेगी🙏 आजाद भारत के पहले मतदाता। • 103 साल के श्याम सरन नेगी, अपनी उम्र और शारीरिक तक़लीफों के बावजूद एक बार फिर से लोकतंत्र के पर्व में भाग लेने को उत्साहित हैं. स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले मतदाता के तौर पर मशहूर नेगी को भारतीय लोकतंत्र का लीविंग लीजेंड भी कहा जाता है. उन्हें 19 मई का इंतजार है, जब किन्नौर सहित हिमाचल प्रदेश में चुनाव होना है. किन्नौर, मंडी संसदीय क्षेत्र का हिस्सा है. अपनी क्षीण आवाज़ में नेगी याद करते हैं, अक्तूबर, 1951 में मैंने पहली बार संसदीय चुनाव में वोट डाला था, इसके बाद मैंने एक भी चुनाव मिस नहीं किया. मैं अपने वोट की अहमियत को जानता हूं. अब तो मेरा शरीर भी साथ नहीं दे रहा है, लेकिन आत्मशक्ति के चलते मैं वोट देने जाता रहा हूं. इस बार भी मताधिकार का इस्तेमाल करना है. हो सकता है कि ये मेरा आख़िरी चुनाव हो. यह उम्मीद है, जिसे मैं अपने जीवन के अंतिम चरण में छोड़ना नहीं चाहता. जब हमलोग नेगी जी से मिलने पहुंचे उस वक्त वे चुनाव आयोग की ओर से भेजे गए बूथ अधिकारी (बीएलओ) और स्थानीय प्रशासन के लोगों से घिरे हुए थे और नींबू चाय पीते हुए स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले चुनाव के मतदान वाले दिन से जुड़ी यादों को शेयर कर रहे थे. नेगी कहते हैं, हां, वो दिन मुझे पूरा याद है. वह मेरे जीवन का बड़ा दिन था. ऐसा कहते हुए उनके चेहरे पर मुस्कान तैर जाती है. स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले चुनाव के दौरान, किन्नौर में 25 अक्तूबर, 1951 को वोट डाले गए थे. वैसे तो भारत में फ़रवरी-मार्च, 1952 में वोट डाले जाने थे लेकिन किन्नौर में जाड़ा और बर्फ़बारी की आशंका को देखते हुए कम से कम पांच महीने पहले चुनाव करा लिए गए थे. नेगी उस वक्त पास के गांव मूरांग में स्कूली शिक्षक थे, लेकिन वे अपने गांव कल्पा (उस वक्त चिन्नी के नाम से जाना जाने वाला गांव) के वोटर थे. ____________________________________________________ झुर्रियों से भरा चेहरा और कमज़ोर शरीर. छड़ी के बिना दो कदम चल भी नहीं सकते. कुछ कदम चलने के बाद उन्हें लंबी सांस लेनी पड़ती है. शिमला से करीब 280 किलोमीटर दूर किन्नौर ज़िले के ख़ूबसूरत से गांव कल्पा में लकड़ी के बने अपने घर में जब वह कुर्सी पर बैठते हैं तो उनके पीछे बर्फ़ से ढकी पहाड़ की चोटियां नजर आती हैं. • I LOVE KINNAUR💖 • #shyamsarannegi #kinnaur #kinnaurvalley #kinnaurdiaries #traditionalart #kinnauri #kalpa #himachalpradesh #1stvoter #india #ilovekinnaur #103 #culture #mountains #himalayas #literacy #teacher #election #independentartist #revolution #negi #love - @our.kinnauri.vibes on Instagram
