Hayato will be closing today until further notice. Hayato is perhaps the smallest restaurant in the city, and we seemingly have a minuscule chance of spreading this virus when we only serve seven guests per night. But Hayato is also part of a community - we are part of a society where we all need to depend on each other at one time or another. Although it’s always my own personal inclination to work myself out of every difficult situation, at some point I understand it becomes necessary to put society first. Hayato will be fine. However, I believe that right now it’s most important to acknowledge that not everyone will be fine. It seems very easy for some people to say that for the good of the country it’s our responsibility to “flatten the curve.” Almost nobody saying this really considers what it means to really be responsible for flattening the curve. Flattening the curve by closing down businesses means taking away peoples’ jobs. People are going to starve. Very few people have the luxury of working from home, or hiring child care so they can still go to work while kids are home from school. For every comment I see applauding shutting everything down, I wonder if people understand the true cost the most vulnerable are about to endure. How many people in this country are about to become homeless? How many people are about to lose their health care and miss screenings that will cost family members their lives? All day today I thought about how lucky I am to have family and friends that offer me a safety net. In the grand scheme of things, even if Hayato burns down I have the luxury of knowing I will not be on the street. There are many others that don’t have a safety net, and some of those people are about to endure the worst times of their lives. Please take a moment be thankful for what you have, and try to do your best to be a positive force while we all work through this together.
